Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

how are you all doing with the event, anons? did your waifus of choice come home to you or are they still holding out?

jp, and i feel bad saying this because i've seen some friend happy about it, but the "All Night Fever" CE makes me uncomfortable because they took the only three black/dark skinned women in the game and lightened all of them up significantly.

isn't it just the lighting? this gets brought up in animation discussion all of the time. as far as i can tell it's because there's a dark room with a bright, cool colored light source.

idk the canon at all so i glanced at the wikis, but holy crap i dont know if lighting like that could make them all so pale and apparently white-skinned like that? considering how dark their natural tone seems to be.

maybe! i forgot my pc has a color filter on at night too. that could explain why i'm not really seeing it.

idk, my skin's about as dark as nito's and I'm not under neon lights daily or anything but my tone isn't that far off from hers where the skin's directly in the light. The real issue with the art is the parts of their body that aren't directly in the light, but I could see the artist just having issues figuring out how to shade that in a way that doesn't look jarring, since I doubt anime artists draw very dark skinned people that often.

the lighting may make them paler, but not *lighter*, if that makes any sense, especially not sheba, who has significantly darker skin otherwise.

but it also doesn't feel like much of a hill to die on since all three of them were essentially designed as fap fuel fanservice characters, so it's not exactly Good Representation for whatever that might be worth, but still.

I mean, the skin colors in this game already vary from artist to artist and gameplay to art. Compare Cu Alter's in-game sprite and his command card sprite with his art. Heck, some characters are actually *darker* in secondary sources, there's a lot of CEs where Nitocris is way darker than she in in her card art.

Japan just isn't really concerned with skin tone as representation, so it's something that's going to vary a lot because they see it the same way as, say, hair color, or height, which also vary a lot from artist to artist. I wouldn't attribute any malice to the variation. Not that I'm saying you aren't allowed to dislike it or be made uncomfortable by it.

yeah, i get that anon. i'm not saying dw or type moon are being deliberately racist when they approve art like this. it's a different culture, after all, and one that's engaged in by a largely racially homogeneous society that rarely ever even has to think about stuff like this. they definitely aren't coming from a place of malice.

but also, yeah, understanding that doesn't make it less upsetting. curbing my expectations doesn't do a lot to ease the discomfort. but it's also one of those things i kind of have to learn to live with, too.

If it helps, I don't even think it was intentionally a 'let's make them lighter' thing, not even malice. I mean, you said yourself that Nito, Sheba, and Schera are popular because people find them attractive, and they find them attractive as they are in canon, with dark skin. So it'd be weird to intentionally draw them lighter skinned. It probably is just legitimately the artist not really knowing how to draw dark skinned people in bright lights.

not for nothin' anon but japanese artists, particularly in the doujin world where most of fgo's artists come from, have a noted habit of making darker skinned characters lighter even when there's no weird lighting involved.

also, in lighting like on the card, even fair skinned characters wouldn't become lighter skinned. they'd just become more blue. there's no real excuse here. the artist likely made a creative choice. it may not have been motivated by malice or racism, but it was still a choice.
