Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

What are your thoughts on fandom OCs? Insofar as would you play with them/do you find them cringey or weird or whatever. Obviously this just goes for memes since they aren't game friendly.

It really depends. Some canons just give you a huge universe like a sandbox to play in with lots of inspiration for characters with pretty much nothing to do with the main canon plot. I generally don't see much wrong with fandom OCs who are just characters inspired by a commercially published mythos or world setting or whatever.

If you're talking about fandom OCs who are just ways for the player to get close to the main characters/plot action with their own thinly veiled self-insert, then I think pretty much everyone starts side-eyeing that shit.

There's usually a world of difference between "Random Pokemon Trainer Sally" and "Sallyko, a girl in Josuke's class who also has a stand I guess"

lmao Yeah, my idea was definitely more a character that just exists within the setting like any other NPC and has no connection to any of the canon plot/characters themselves. I'm wondering if it might be worth it just try reworking them into a fully-fledged OC, but I'm so attached to the canon and what they can do within the setting that it would be a shame to remove it completely.

this is why fandom dressing rooms need to come back tbh

these echo my thoughts too. some canons are just a lot better for building more palatable OCs that stand strong on their own. some canons aren't so easy to integrate with or extrapolate from without potentially affecting the established parts of canon or established characters.

that said, i really enjoy seeing any fandom ocs around, tbh, and i play a small handful of them.

As long as you're not trying to give my canon character a surprise relative/friend/love interest out of nowhere, I'll give your OC a shot if you tag me.

I'm curious, OP, which canons you think are the most ripe for OCs. mainly because I play from canons with literally hundreds of characters so it seems odd to me to try to think up a new one when the type of character I'd want to mess around with probably already exists.

Harry Potter and Star Wars come to mind easily, but what else you got?

Halo is another one, but the canon is so complex it's far more common to see Freelancer OCs from Red vs Blue than, say, a SPARTAN-III/IVs or even ODSTs. I recall some people played Elite OCs back in the day, though.

nayrt but an above anon mentioned pokemon which i also agree has a lot of material for ocs to work with without ever really intersecting canon characters

personally ive been tempted to build my hero academia ocs lately, since the worldbuild promotes a lot of possibilities for really unique characters

I'd prefer not to out myself so obviously, but this is a canon that only has a small handful of non-NPCs to begin with, and it's also extremely vague/up for interpretation so you'd rarely if ever find people playing from it anyway. If I played a canon character they'd basically be 80% headcanon and that doesn't sit as well with me.

I feel the same about huge canons, though, but I've seen some people do pretty neat things with series like BNHA like another anon said downthread, and then, of course, games with silent protagonists like Pokemon or game-canon Persona.

Not op, but supernatural has some great creature and world building mythos and I've enjoyed playing off several ocs from that world, whether I'm playing an spn character or not.

Sense8 would be good for them but I haven't seen any.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-28 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
long running series with branching timelines or big casts of characters, like hp and sw as you mentioned.

i find a lot of video games have excellent canon settings to build ocs from, especially rpgs.

i feel like the more populated a canon is with characters, the easier it is to slip a believable fandom oc in.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-25 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Now that you ask, what games are there that actually accept fandom OCs, provided they have common sense rules? (no surprise relatives, no power-breaking characters, etc)

Games accepting OCs is common, but I've yet to find one that accepts fandom OCs.

I didn't check on those games, but now I will. Many thanks, anon!

I can't judge because I play one sometimes. I only tag friends who have expressed that they are okay with the oc, or strangers who have tagged me first. I think that's key, it lets people opt in instead of putting it on other people to opt out.
