I've seen a lot of drama surrounding Elric brothers being played and I'm actually new to/never been part of the fandom, so any and all advice on how to play her well (I feel pretty solid about picking her up TBH) is appreciated. Things to avoid, etc.

I never saw the 2003 series, if that helps/hurts?

Honestly the two huge things to remember about Riza is while she is quite harsh on Roy and can be blunt on the brothers, she's not a stone cold bitch - she cares a lot for people close to her, she just knows how to set her emotions aside to get the job done, but she's not afraid to actually be supportive and comforting when the situation calls for it, such as talking to a young Winry when the girl's worried about Ed.

Secondly, like almost all the military characters, she took part in the Ishvalan civil war, and is cognizant of the fact that she has committed war crimes either directly or by assisting in the process. She's not okay with this (no one really is), and might have nightmares or gloomy thoughts on the subject, especially once the truth comes out but she's firmly in the 'you have to keep going forward to keep it from happening again' camp, and does not really want to talk about it with people she's not really close to.
