Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

any advice on writing a concise history and personality to display in a journal?

i would start by creating bullet points highlighting the important parts you want people to know about your character, and then work on fluffing those out so you don't tl;dr too much.

in my case i went the longer, more complicated route by being dumb: i ended up writing a lengthy full history for one page, and then have another that's an "abridged" version for people who want more of a summary than a synopsis of my character's story. unless that sounds appealing to you, go with the first option.

personality

- list down ten traits. make it 50/50 if you can. give 1 -2 canon examples of them doing that action. explain through the action/s why they bothered to do that/why it happened in the first place. you'd be surprise on how quick you pass 500 words through this.

history

- listing as 'major events' helps me out a lot. first put up a timeline of 'born' 'meets x' 'goes on adventure' helps save time a lot since i fuss over details and find myself explaining x y and z. there are ready codes over at ij for this sort of stuff so no need to worry about it prettying it up yourself.

WORLD BUILDING

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
How important do you guys think World building is to OCs? I have a couple I'm working on and I have a general idea of the world they inhabit (kind of a light high-fantasy kind of thing) and naturally the world should influence the characters within it, but I care way more about the characters themselves than the world they inhabit.

Is it necessary to have a whole detailed world with lots of little notes or is it generally acceptable to have more of a "They live here and some shit happens as I think of it" attitude?

you want it to be fairly robust. You don't need it to be detailed down to the dot, but no person is born in a vacuum and no character should be created in one either, so the politics of a place (both in how it's governed and interpersonal) you should definitely have down. As for the rest it's mostly a case of making sure you're not creating a hole behind it. Like making a big deal that the country is mountainous and there's very little farmland but characters have consistent and easy access to cow milk, you're either gonna need a good reason or you've just created a "how the fuck"

if there isn't anything TOO fascinating about the world they're from, give us a sketch of what it looks like and you can leave it at that. instead focus on their place on it. as the anon above said, no one is born in a vacuum, and that can apply to their personal lives rather than the world at large. think about the factors made the character who they are, whether that includes the monster that terrorized the countryside for 1000 years or their crazy aunt their parents told them not to talk to but they befriended anyway.
