Get that literally out of here

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

am coming back to dwrp after a year-ish long break. got some questions.

what are the popular games these days? not necessarily the games with the biggest player roster, but the ones that are overwhelmingly regarded as active, friendly, and fun.
is the atp meme still a thing or should i just use the atp thread here?
has past tense prose made a comeback yet? if no, are there any games that lean prose-heavy as opposed to comment spam?

thanks nonas.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
dunno about the first one but atp is now enablemeplz and past tense has not come back

(Anonymous) 2017-07-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
as a warning, there's some weirdo anon who gets all up in arms about using "nonas" so watch out

in response to your questions:
el nysa is the "hype" game right now. games my plurk friends are in are riverview, the pines (there's questionable mods though), mask or menace (not considered very friendly iirc though), recolle, futurology, snowblind (small and slow-moving but oocly friendly), empatheias, and hadriel.

the atp meme died but [personal profile] enablemeplz exists now! it's the same thing and goes up every last saturday. the atp thread here works, too, but you might see different people on emp.

not really, but i've found people who will prose with me, especially present-tense. if i remember correctly, [personal profile] sixthiteration is a prose game, as is [community profile] alteredstates but i don't see any posts since late may. it doesn't seem to have closed either, though. i've also seen prose in [community profile] entranceway.

thanks! and wow most of these games were open back when i started my break. the longevity of them is pretty impressive, but i was lowkey hoping we'd have more new sandboxes to play in by now. i'll wait for emp before i go poking around, i think.

Just adding that [community profile] lostcarnival also has a lot of prose (present tense), and most people are cool with whatever format. It's a small game but it's active.

I think re: past tense prose you'd get more traction with it if you asked people you thread with ahead of time. I think a lot of people just default to present+action because that's what's popular. I tend to still use past tense, but these days I use action tags because I know that's what will get me responses. people will harp on and on about how it's the content!!! that determines your tag amount but really, I've tested it. I've written one open log in prose and another in action brackets at the same game. guess which one got way more responses?

But, that being said, I have a handful of people that will do past tense prose with me, but only because I reached out and asked. that's honestly what it boils down to. if you're not willing to discuss that sort of thing with other players, you're gonna just be dealing with present tense prose more often than not.

i've done the test on it, too, and it's pretty disheartening. i'll probably take your suggestion and talk to people about it once i mosey back into a game, though.

at the time i left, i noticed a lot of people using "action brackets" to disguise prose tags. do people still do that? paragraphs of tiny font that i have to strain to read because of formatting trends.

da

yep. people write literally the same thing they'd write in a prose tag and just stick it in brackets and small font bc we're all used to bracket formatting. it's annoying af but what can you do

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
use ctrl and + to zoom in on it

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
you can set a minimum text size in chrome

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

yep, there's still a lot of that going on. it's honestly ridiculous how that's what's in vogue, but until people express wanting to change, it's what we're stuck with. and it sucks, honestly, because there are times where I'm away from my computer, out and about, and when I have downtime I'm like, "gee I could write tags now if I didn't have to finagle with html tags."

I don't like it much, honestly, but I will take good past tense writing with small text any day than the alternative of one liners, present tense and zero substance.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
tell your partners not to use small tags because you struggle to read the size and they will

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
unfortunately you're gonna find present-tense brackets in (almost?) every game. that said, many people do still use past tense and/or prose, it's just a matter of communicating ahead of time that you'd prefer it if possible and finding out who else prefers it. anecdotally i've seen and done many more psl threads in prose than game threads.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have a passing familiarity with a couple of the games other anons mentioned, so I can throw in my two cents. First of all, I think things are going to tend toward present for a while; sadly, while I can't help you with that I can try and offer my own defense of it, at least! I think many people, myself included, feel it matches the improvisational, spontaneous nature of RP more than past tense. Obviously it's not for everyone and I'm not trying to sway you, but maybe that explanation will help you stomach it better.

Recolle is so large and fast partially because many (though not all) of the players prefer short bracket tags and network threads. I've had a lot of fun there and I like being able to cut through a lot of short and sweet tags in a short amount of time, but it doesn't sound like the game at large will fit what you want on an IC level.

I've seen more prose writing in Hadriel than most other games I've looked at. Most people also seem to write a substantial bit for their tags, even if they use brackets. Snowblind is also prose-heavy if I remember correctly; it's got a slower day ratio and has about half a year left or so, so it might be something worth checking out if you want to scratch a short-term itch. Snowblind's OOC community seems very friendly and excited to play; Hadriel seems mellower OOC by comparison.

The others I'm not as familiar with...I used to know more about MoM, but it's completely fallen off the radar, so it might have chilled out some. Since El Nysa is brand new, now could be the time to be the change there, too! Checking out EMP sounds like a good idea! I hope you find a game you like.

(Also, I don't know how much you care about OOC trends, but you're not likely to find people using "nonas" anymore, IMO.)

I wish past tense would make a comeback. I don't know why but I never got used to writing present tense, probably because I default to past everywhere but here, but I have to actively force myself to remember to use present, and often times I end up writing in past then going through and changing it to present. I get that we use present because we're describing the action as it happens rather than re-telling a story, but writing in past just feels more natural to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
then write in past tense? if anyone gives you shit for writing in past vs present, they're probably not worth interacting with, anyway.

write in whatever tense you want to. personally i default to present tense prose but i'll match whatever tense my tagging partner is using, it's less awkward that way

Why are you guys so weird about this nonexistent "problem"

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao wtf. i don't even notice what tense other people write in, i just write however is comfortable and fun for me. so do the same?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-17 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i generally change what tense i'm using based on what the other person is using, but ultimately i don't give a shit either way

what a bizarre thing to be scared of
