Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

there has been anime made in the past with at least some attempt at showing queerness as something besides fanservice in the past (samurai flamenco comes to mind), but it's rare and usually not very good

but yeah, most queer media in japan is either literature or manga, with the occasional film. not a lot in the anime world.

you're seriously whipping out samurai flamenco as your example of representation in japanese media? the one where the director flat out no homo'd it in an interview? nice try.

i'm talking about mari and moe, you fucking moron.

i loved mari and moe, but you're deluding yourself if you think that was played for representation and not fanservice.

if the series cared more about fanservice than representing a natural relationship that developed between two people who went through some incredible hardship together, masayoshi and hidenori would have hooked up in the end like all the fans wanted them to, instead of doing what the director thought was more natural.

it's really telling how you look at the center m/m ship of the series being denied as a slap in the face of representation, but the center f/f of the show as "fanservice".

mari and moe had a lot of stuff going on and moe was clearly gay, but mari constantly kissing moe was pretty clearly for the titillation factor rather than them actually having a romantic relationship, since mari was still going after the cop till the end. it was more than just fanservice, since the relationship clearly mattered and had substance (though by that criteria you could say the same for dragon maid), but i would hesitate to call it any kind of representation. also, are you really defending the denial of masayoshi/hidenori as "it was more natural"? why the fuck have a naked marriage proposal then?

also if you're trying to rag on me for holding f/f to different standards than m/m you're preaching to the wrong anon, because my primary interest is f/f.

i'm reading this and just getting frustrated. it's pretty clear we're of two different minds on this, and that's okay, i'm not in the mood to argue over it. i think we can both agree with the original point of anime not being a great place to go looking for any kind of good queer representation, at least.

yeah, probably.

tbh, i'd rather anime's wacky lesbian perverts and boob jiggle over 'everyone is sad and dies' or forced attempts at being counterculture. Neither is ideal, but I can at least have some fun and get some positive feelings from the former.

there's a plethora of stories out there in the manga world besides gay tragedies, anon. you don't have to settle for shitty objectification.

I didn't mean manga

i meant western tv/movies

and im not 'settling,' i enjoy it.

you proposed it as if it was a dichotomy. it's not.

keep finding excuses to throw f/f under the bus, you bitter betty

Re: dda

not liking anime's tendency to frame lesbianism as fetish or comedy meant for men isn't the same as throwing all of media featuring queer women under the bus, especially when i personally read a fucking ton of yuri manga and novels, but okei

yes, because a female character being into a male cop despite another woman being clearly gay for her is the f/f representation we all need

did you only watch half the series, or... ?

mari clearly gets over her feelings for hidenori and reconciles with moe after she comes out of hiding. it's a major fucking point that you apparently missed
