I'm curious to know what you mean by "asking for captions" at the movies. do you mean when you go out to the movies with friends, or will theatres apply subs to a showing if they know there is a deaf person in the audience? (in my area, cinemas have a small number of ready subtitled showings and that's the extent of it).

the only enable-type memes that come to mind for me are the "muse most wanted" meme for bakerstreet and i know some games have enable me memes, but those are more for "looking for a homestuck cast! i'd really love an x, y, or z at shittyjamjargame!" or "i play goku and i'm looking for a game/partner!" there's also enablemeplz but that isn't quite a "enable me into canons" meme either. the closest thing would be when anons occasionally make "recommend a character/canon to me" threads.

maybe you could suggest an official subthread for that to that mod or the rpanons mod?

White Collar! It has intense heist scenes instead of fight scenes, it's not a new show (it ended three years ago), and it's not as feel-good-y as Leverage, but I think they're in a similar enough vein that you would enjoy it!

Usually if you want captions at the movies you have to ask ahead of time. There's no way to know that there is a deaf audience member unless someone explicitly tells the theater. I don't usually like asking because I get eye-rolling and sighing and feel like I'm an inconvenience even though that's my given right to enjoy life just as anyone else would.

My guess for your area is that there is a heavy Deaf population or at least enough Deaf people who frequent the area to lock down ready subtitled showings. But I've never had that in my area.

I know there are reddit channels that basically bring the disAbility community together via gaming but I haven't had any luck yet.

irresponsible captain tylor. gimmick is a total incompetent goofball lucks his way into being made captain of a spaceship and just fumbles around winning a war while everyone tries to figure out if he's a secret genius or just the luckiest moron in the world. as mentioned it's got a war storyline but it's mostly a broad comedy that parodies the space opera genre more than anything.

For slice of life, I'll rec Ikoku Meiro no Croisée! Set in Paris during the late 19th century, it's about a Japanese girl who comes to work for an old man and his nephew in their ironworks shop and how she adjusts to life in France and the culture there. It has some rather pretty visuals and a low-key and relaxed tone overall, with lots of sweet moments throughout, and is a short watch at 12 episodes (plus a bonus one that came with the DVDs)!

hunter x hunter for the latter? it starts out with basic punches/kicks as the main modes of attack but once nen is introduced about 20 episodes in the powers keep getting weirder and weirder until there's a dude whose power is making people play a dodgeball match to the death.

I'm not certain how widespread their services are, but my most local cinema chain (this is in the UK, ftr) offers subbed screenings (albeit not a whole lot of them), as well as special autism-friendly screenings of kids movies. which is really cool, because afaik none of the other cinemas in my neck of the woods offer that. odeon are good peeps.

it's hard-hearted for people to complain about subs when, as you say, you're just as entitled to enjoy the showing as anyone else present. and it's such a minor thing too. oh no, a line of words at the bottom of the screen, however will we enjoy the movie now?

absolutely seconding this. i watched this show initially just because i was a fan of the protag's voice actor, but it has become one of my favorite series. it's ridiculous without being stupid, and has its moments of seriousness without being angsty.
