Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

1) i find it always goes over best when the person you're trying to enable actually has asked for recommendations.

if they didn't ask and you want to try anyway (which is fine, just possibly harder), try not to oversell it, because a lot of people do and it tends to not work out in their favour. same for things that invite nostalgia goggles – the harder you try to push it as this huge, genre-bending, amazing thing that totally changed your life when you watched/read/played it at age 10, the higher the chances of the other person humouring you but mentally already checking out.

also: little bit of regard for the things people are generally already into goes a long way. obviously, me only playing from mediums x, y, z, doesn't necessarily mean i'm automatically not interested in mediums a, b, and c, at the end of the day, my muselist only indicates so much – but if i never, ever seem to mention a, b, and c, and never seem to show any interest at all... maybe, just maybe, you can save your breath.

2) i guess ij has some fandom rp? but with the exception of a few games, it's mostly single-fandom (and that fandom tends to be either supernatural or hp).

that's some very good advice re: enabling, and i will do my best to keep it in mind in the future. thank you for giving me such a thoughtful reply.

don't act like the canon is absolutely flawless. every canon has its faults and i'm more likely to care about a recommendation if it's not putting the canon on a pedestal.

i'm more likely to give a shit about "buffy is campy, goofy, and a little dated but i love it!" than "JOSS WHEDON IS A MODERN SHAKESPEARE AND PISSES EXCELLENCE LIKE FIREFLY!"

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
this is also very good advice. perhaps i wasn't acknowledging my canon's flaws/quirks/issues enough. will try to do so next time. thanks!

ITT: RECOMMEND CANONS TO ANONS

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
anons say what they're looking for, other anons recommend what they might like. you know the drill.

Re: Spoilers!

Well, apart from the fact that I'm just naturally more interested in the sort of story Automata is trying to tell, I really appreciate how subtle these characters are in comparison to the first game's. I love how some of the late game reveals add so much more depth and meaning to interactions that seem totally innocuous at first. Plus it just makes it all the more effective when they do start showing serious emotion. Don't get me wrong though, the first game's cast is fantastic, and I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with preferring them even if I disagree. Automata just worked better for me.

That said, it's certainly not perfect. I wish A2 had more to do in the game. I liked her but she didn't get as much attention as I was hoping. I know there's the stage play with her so at least the content exists though.

ij has fandom psls and some pan-fandom gpsls. they mostly favor live action. speaking from many years playing on both ij and lj/dw, i actually suspect ij has a larger active playerbase. but most of them are into rpf, not fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks for the analysis. unfortunately rpf is not my thing, nor is my canon a live-action one. 8( if either factor changes, though, now i know where to go. thank you!

something clever and fun and heartwarming, but action-oriented (NOT slice of life.) i'm looking for a feel good show where the good guys usually win the day, the bad guys go to jail, and i get to watch some fight scenes, rollicking shenanigans, and/or fun banter in the middle

(basically i'm looking for a new show to replace the leverage-shaped-hole in my life)

camaraderie in space. I just want a likeable cast on a spaceship doin thangs. la or animated/anime is fine. less popular canons preferred because I've probably already watched the easy to find shit.

a good pitch is tailored to the person you're pitching for, and imo should be about what they feel like and want to watch.

- what kind of stuff do your person like and how does the series you're pitching fit what they're looking for in a [show/book/whatever]
- what are its strengths, what are its flaws. you don't need to shit over the stuff you like, just a "oh, the characters are so much fun and make me laugh and smile but the plot gets kinda thin," not gushing over how great it is
- realistic time assessment of how long it'll take for them to consume this thing. ex: "oh it's a quick n easy game, maybe 5 hours tops?" "it's ten seasons long and going strong, but maybe give the first three episodes a try before you try to commit to more."
- keep it short and sweet.

you only get to pitch once. TWICE, if you're best friends. after that, every time you bring it up to them, mentally add six months to whenever they'll get around to the thing. nobody likes to feel pressured into things

for the 3ds (must be an american console): a Zelda theme and Flipnote Studio 3D

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you for this advice. i was honestly worried about being too pushy or annoying (can't always tell) and now i have some more guidelines for how not to be.

there are definitely IJ rpfs that do characters from other mediums including animated and vg, but often they require LA icons. usually nobody cares how accurate the PB is so if you can stomach that (or just adblock all icons) then it might be worth looking still

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
lawful and chaotic got nothing to do with actually following/upholding the law though, it's more about being disciplined vs spontaneous

but then the alignment system is annoyingly ill-fitting even for dnd, what about stuff that is not dungeons and dragons

CARTOONS AND TEEN SHOWS (SITCOMS, DRAMAS, ETC)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm not necessarily looking for "something similar to x" i just want to know what anons liked. or what i should avoid because they're trash because of bad acting/jokes/whatever.

for example, i've heard a lot of people shit on dog with a blog and i didn't like the one episode i watched. i've heard victorious is good but i haven't checked it out yet.

i don't mind anons bringing up flaws with the shows like "it was made in the 90's so it's a little dated" or "it has that dumb "smart naggy mom and dumb fun dad" trope" as long as you don't give any big spoilers.

non-english shows are fine as long as there are subtitles available. preferably nothing pre-90's but i'm open to anything. no preference for channel/studio. any video size/quality is fine as long as it's not potato-quality. any genre is fine.

"don't act like it's flawless" anon

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, definitely give a realisic time assessment.

also don't be afraid to give a warning like "the first 2 episodes are a little bland but it gets better after that!"

possibly consider linking a youtube video of "best scenes/funniest moments" if it wouldn't be too spoilery.

I will probably RP the Link from this at some point, I like playing Links.

The game itself is a 10/10 for me, easily. It's not perfect but no game is.

As an experience it's exactly the sort of game I've been wanting to play for a while now (other open world games haven't scratched the itch like this one has).
