Icon-wise, someone on here said they open Photoshop or whatever and set the canvas to 100x100, then size or crop the image as they see fit. Just don't put borders or text in there and you should be fine.

Yep, he's an original so say so.

I see, thanks a lot!

But one more thing, can you give me any tips about portraying an antagonist OC? He's a 12-14 years old hacker who has brainwashing powers and loves to create chaos and get everything he wants while doing so.

my true and honest advice is to age him up some, people hate playing against the genius kid type, DOUBLE if they're going to be an antagonist and "lulz I troll u" about it. even taking him up to 16 would help, but 18ish would be best. he can still have been a genius at those ages, people will just be greatly relieved to not have to PLAY off him at those ages.

I understand why I have to age him up, but do people hate playing the genius kid-type a lot?

A lot, and people are already wary of OCs. If you want to get a decent amount of play a character that young with those character traits isn't a good choice even playing a canon character. Do yourself a favor OP, just some friendly advice.

Well, back to the drawing board... Ugh...

I have to pick something else, do I?

nah, it won't be a problem as long as he isn't so young. the older you can make him and still have it be fun for you, the better.

Okay, I'll try.

But I have to warn you, I may have little to medium experience on portraying teenage OCs.

OC player here, and I admit that one of my least favorite characters to play off of is the "obnoxious genius kid" type. I avoid canon ones already, and there are so many of them.

Sorry OP. I love seeing OCs around and play a handful myself, but I'm with the other anon on this one. :(

I understand. Thanks for your opinion, now I just have to think up another type of young antagonist... (little disappointed)

Why is their youth necessary? Just curious

the way ayrt types, it wouldn't surprise me if they were 12-14 themself.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-02-17 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I thought playing a genius kid with a bratty way to create chaos might be fun to play.

it might be fun to play, but it's not always fun to play against, if you get what i mean. kid characters of any type just rub some people the wrong way, and when you put 'has super abilities in some areas/is super smart/is better than you' in with it, it just adds to that grating factor. i think there'd have to be a special game made up with kids in mind to have them be welcome in general, since a lot of games seem to have shippy/violent standards that people aren't comfortable playing with/around children types.

my main character has a child in their canon, but they're not around often in the series and i think i've only ever seen one of them in dwrp. they didn't stay long and even though i wouldn't mind playing against them, i can understand them not feeling welcome by others as kids can be hard to play off of. realistically, anyway.

You may have a point... Thanks anyway...

OC playing anon from above

+1 to all of this. A character like that might be fun to play but not fun to play off of.

For antagonist OC advice in general, make sure to communicate oocly with other players. Some people don't like negative CR but others love it. I'd put some info about your OC in their profile so people can get a feel for what they might get from thread swith you.

You could keep the same bratty genius but workshop him a bit. Unless you are dead set on playing a child you can have a bratty adult.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-02-21 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But how will I workshop my OC? My main target for this bratty genius OC is about 12-14 years old.

one reason a lot of people hate playing with characters like this is because the player of that character type always has to have their genius win or be right all the time, even in a simple argument/disagreement. the player never seems to want to play their genius character losing an argument or being wrong about something. you have to keep in mind that "genius" does not mean "being right 100% of the time about everything ever and never losing".

real life genius types usually have certain things they're skilled at: such as figuring out mathematical problems, games of strategy (such as chess), playing a musical instrument, having a memory for detail when it comes to certain subjects. they aren't just a genius "at Life" in general. no one is a genius at EVERYTHING. think about what specific skills your character has. is he a genius computer hacker? in that case, he might be great with code but he might be terrible at other things and pretty stupid when it comes to social behavior. so if you play him in a game, let him be terrible at some things. let him be mediocre at some things. let him be able to make mistakes and learn from them. geniuses aren't just born. they LEARN things.

also if he's bratty, think about WHY he's bratty. does he just not understand that other people have feelings? or is he hiding an underlying sense of low self esteem? what are things he's afraid of? and i don't just mean "spiders". i mean what are his real weaknesses? his real fears? these are fantastic questions to ask yourself when making ANY character.

i used to rp in a game with a character who fit the "bratty child genius" trope to a T but was still wonderful to play with because the player was willing to let the character be wrong, lose arguments, get frustrated with himself for not understanding something, make mistakes, and eventually learn to be a better person. you have to be willing to poke fun at your character's flaws and let other characters poke fun at them, too. if your character is the type to troll people, you have to be able to let him get trolled back.

I feel like a lot of this applies to kid characters across the board, tbh, canon or OC.

The kid and teen characters that seem to work best in rp settings with adults are resilient characters with certain strengths that aren't totally dependent on adults, but also not good at everything or totally independent either. They have flaws, they have weaknesses, if they're really good at something or a genius in one area, they're not as talented in others. If they're bratty, it's for very human reasons, like a background of mistreatment that makes them act out or issues that cause self esteem problems. For instance, Zuko from ATLA started pretty obnoxious in canon but when you really got the full picture of his abuse and exile by Ozai and you understand that he's very psychologically damaged, his temper flares and screaming episodes are a lot more sympathetic.

The good players let the young character "lose." They can't be totally dependent on adults but can't be treated as totally mature and functional on their own yet, either. They can be smart in some areas but shouldn't be experts in everything. They can be bratty sometimes but there needs to be grounded reasons instead of brattiness for brattiness' sake, and it's annoying if it's all the time.

A lot of people are willing to play with a good Aang or Mabel and Dipper Pines if they're handled well. Even Steven Universe is tolerated if in the hands of a good player, sometimes tolerated more in RP than some RPers are willing to tolerate him in the canon itself. Some kid and teen anime characters that are played in a grounded way do well, too. Meanwhile, know-it-all child and teen characters, or ones that are treated as being right all the time and smarter than the adults, are sometimes seriously disliked. I feel like teen and kid OCs need to fall in line with all that too, or else they don't work.

I see. Thanks a lot, guys. You gave me a lot of good advice back there.
