putting a word to it may be new, but you're lying to yourself if you haven't realized by now that jughead's character, for over half a century and change, has been focused on gettin' dat burg instead of gettin' dat puss.

dude has classicaly had zero interest in women or sex. modern archie just put an actual term to it.

he's been interested in girls before, so it's not like it's completely out of the question.

it's just that when it comes down to it, burgers always come first. there are different degrees of romantic interest and libidos; it's not like you can only ever want sex 24/7 or never want it, only two options no variation whatsoever. the fact that people believe that gradation is the exception and not the rule is the reason why we now have stupid shit like demisexuality being taken seriously.

if he's shown a romantic interest before, i can't recall it, but i'm not gonna say it didn't happen either because i haven't read the entirety of the comic and i doubt any of us have.

like i told the other anon, if he's ever shown any romantic or sexual interests, i missed it. the character has traditionally (and to a point even made it part of his code of character, like it was part of his own personal code of conduct) not given a single shit about sex, like actively. not in the "this is a family friendly comic so no one talks about whoopee" way, in the "the character has almost literally said he cares more about burgers than sex".

if he's broken this code in the past, and since this comic's ran since the 40s under a whole ton of writers that is entirely possible, then whatever, but the basic framework of the character is burg > sex/women/relationships/high school social politics bullshit. that's who jughead is.

prioritizing something over sex does not make someone asexual. this isn't hard to figure out.

dude, he didn't just "prioritize", he literally rejected it. if you refuse to partake in something entirely, that generally means something.

if you refuse to eat meat, chances are you're a vegetarian. if you refuse to involve yourself in sex and relationships, chances are your celibacy might be related to being asexual.

he may or may not asexual, i can't read minds, and riverdale isn't committing some grave sin by not having him be asexual, but it's a perfectly valid interpretation of his behavior from the original comics and it's canon to the current one. unclench.

In "A Lass From The Past", written by Nate Butler and first appearing in Jughead #5 (April 1988), Jughead explains the reason he does not chase after girls is because of a childhood heartbreak, sustained before he moved to Riverdale. Little Jughead befriended Joani and they had a puppy love relationship. Jughead's family moved to Riverdale and he had to leave Joani behind. Determined to not endure heartbreak again, he swore off girls, keeping little Joani's picture in his wallet as a reminder. That changed when Debbie moved to town (in "Jughead's Journal," written by Rod Ollerenshaw and also first appearing in Jughead #5), and Jughead began to overcome his old heartbreak as they started dating. However, Joani suddenly visits town. Now a young woman, she tells Jughead that she never forgot him and still has a crush on him, and they share their first kiss. Before Jughead decides whether he wants to pursue a relationship with Joani, she leaves him, but with a promise that they will be together again. The comic even had Jughead say, "Sometimes, life is just more interesting than burgers and shakes."[14] For a while, Debbie and Joani formed Jughead's own love triangle, but fans did not like it, so both girls disappeared and Jughead reverted to his classic independent lifestyle. A few years later, a girl named Trula Twyst appeared. She tends to drive Jughead crazy with her ability to predict his next moves, and they developed a love-hate relationship.

Another thread that has run through stories in recent years involves a psychic experience he is supposed to have had, caused by an odd pin he wears on his hat. In the early 1990s, Jughead had three girlfriends: Debbie, Joani, and January McAndrews. The latter is Archie's descendant in the future, who starred with Jughead in Jughead's Time Police, a short-lived spinoff comic about their adventures traveling through time.

but okay, asexual as an inherent trait isn't accurate to classic jughead. still, these seem so few and far between (and apparently unpopular with readers) that i can see why i forgot about them (or even realized they were a thing in january's case)

i think it speaks more to jughead having issues regarding emotional attachment problems or bonding too closely. you could look at it as 'he LOVES' instead of just someone who has infatuations and flings. so when he 'broke up' with joani or was taken away from her, he was still pining for her and his heart was already taken.

archie and reggie are players. they've always played the field and while archie might come back to betty/veronica, he clearly doesn't love either one of them if he could never just grow a pair and settle on one. he loves GIRLS, not one specific girl. jughead just found his one and only early on and had no interest in others and cutting himself off from it seemed more logical than leaving himself open to being hurt again.

(which is one way to look at it other than 'pure asexual jughead')
