Goku's never been this fight hungry, impatient, or threatening to people he considers friends before.

Take a look at the beginning of super vs now. King Kai tells Goku not to piss off beerus or bad shit will happen. Goku more or less listens to him, while still asking for a fight.

Beerus and Whis tell Goku not get too involved with Zeno or else Beerus will end him. Goku doesn't listen and outright threatens to bring Zeno there or go to him and there ain't nothing Beerus can do about it. and will now be the cause of the heatdeath of 11 other universes.

to be fair, goku doesn't even know about the 'universal destruction' part of the tournament yet. he just wants to fight some super strong guys from all over the place and views omni king as a bro. hold the 'goku is worst than hitler' comments until the next episode when the rules are actually made and how goku will react to them.

and he's always been selfish, but it's toei's writers and the funi dub that altered the more negative parts of his personality. even toriyama says that he's not supposed to be a righteous hero like they portray him. he's pure hearted and will protect his friends, but he's always put fighting first over anything else. (ex: letting vegeta go in saiyan arc to fight him again, giving cell a senzu bean so gohan will have a good fight, threatening to killing supreme kai so he could fight vegeta again and risk unsealing buu)

Expect Toriyama did portray him as more heoric in the Z arcs. His most selfish moments were in the childhood/young adult sagas were he murdered the fuck out of people or put them on the moon for revenge.

while he has gotten kinder since his childhood, he's still shown selfish moments in z and super. this selfishness is linked to his fighting impulses and not the conventional sense (ex: "i want money, clothes, girls and no one else can have them") that people are used to.

one of the biggest reasons why zamasu went crazy was because goku challenged him to a friendly spar. and it's been foreshadowed since then that he's becoming a threat. a lot of shit that happened in the series can be linked to goku being directly or indirectly the cause. this whole universe survival arc might be on a much grander scale, but it's no different than what we've seen until now.
