Just looked into this and holy crap. Am I the only one laughing over someone trying to make Firefly less problematic by pretending River Tam is chinese..... with a Korean-American PB.

And Tam isn't even a word in Mandarin Chinese.

does it say anywhere that they want to play her as chinese? i can't find it but if so, that's super fucking offensive. asian ethnicities and nationalities aren't just interchangeable like that, wtf.

It's a well-worn piece of The Discourse that firefly should have had a more multi-ethnic cast. The setting is heavily Chinese integrated, with the characters slipping into Chinese phrases often, and Joss Whedon has stated that the Tams specifically were on paper for Chinese casting, but he ended up going for Summer Glau instead.

So yes, she's meant to be Chinese, which is a further example of how this player's decided to make a point about it but isn't bothering to actually address the details, including explaining why for anyone looking, or picking a PB that isn't just as much of a problem. She clearly just wants to play from firefly without it being ~problematic~ and thinks just pasting a different face on River will do that.

does the game even allow noncanon AUs to be applied for? the mods are being really weird about this player.
