love ur lack of an ic/ooc divide

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

au fantasy game with politics, war, and slavery

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
here are my ideas so far! happy to have help, already have a lot of pages up!

premise
in a war-torn continent, what was once a small and stable coastal empire has been in a period of advancement, destroying neighboring kingdoms using powerful blood magic, slavery, and more. with a politically cut-throat culture, these wars are the distraction of an aging emperor who is trying to get his affairs in order. recently, they have brought to heel their largest neighboring kingdom, and gameplay begins in the days after its capital has fallen.

apping
players can app in ocs or canon characters into either of these cultural groups, with the option to be members of either royal family (or their nobility, knights, etc.), and will have a period to hash out relationships. those belonging to the conquered kingdom can machinate pre-existing relationships with the aggressing forces to sell out their own kingdom and be spared, or have been taken as captives and slaves, etc. 50 player cap w/ rolling apps.

themes
dark magic, dog eat dog politics, slavery, stewing rebellion, powerplay. def. an 18+ game.

mechanics
characters gain political or magical power by completing objectives they hide in their app. important npcs, like the emperor, can all be killed or overthrown.

how it would look in action
say you read all the info and you really want to play one of the royal guards of the conquered kingdom, and play out being forced into slavery by one of the empire's nobles. you can either npc that noble or find someone who's playing a noble to be your character's master. on inspecting the roster, you see someone is playing the royal prince, who has managed to hide their identity and is also a slave. together you guys come up with a plot where your royal guards sees and recognizes the crown prince. you make two of your character's hidden goals to secretly kill the prince's master, and make sure he gets claimed afterwards by someone who secretly is a sympathizer with the fallen kingdom and will treat him well. on completing those goals, your character becomes known to other slaves in secret as a 'rebel' figure, and other npc slaves start passing your character actionable and useful intel about goings on at court.

I like the idea of this a lot, especially the angle of the wars as distraction for the emperor. That's a great slight of hand, and makes me want to watch this game just to see if anyone unravels that little gem.

So, a few questions that I hope help with refinement.

1. Will you have a brainstorming post for the AUing of canon based characters?
2. Could you explain what you mean by "completing objectives they hide in their app"? This is a little vague and I'm not quite sure what you mean.
3. What is the level of NPC involvement going to be in this game - extremely hands on, or generally off and far away? If the former, how do you plan to ensure equal airtime to all players?
4. Are objectives going to be handed out with set limits each month, done as a monthly event, or something else all together?
5. Is there a set end in terms of months (1 year run, 6 month run, etc.) or no?
6. When you say fantasy, are you talking medieval Europe, Middle Eastern, or something else? I'm genuinely curious about the environment.
7. Maybe because this is tied to point 2 and I'm confused, but your in-action example seems a little convoluted. It makes sense as a player plot which could be initiated by those in question, but the talk of hidden goals etc. when you haven't quite explained how they're supposed to work in terms of the app is confusing. Unless you mean to say that by having these goals on the application itself, it is supposed to encourage CR and plotting, in which case it makes sense.
8. How do you plan to balance information that should stay secret versus information hoarding?

I'd also be happy to review pages etc. if you need a second set of eyes.

awesome!! by design, most politickers from the empire will have a good idea that this is the emperor's purpose, and most of the really meaty political bits will be the internal powerplay that's going on in light of that intel. have some strong conspiracies already set up for monthly events ideas!

1. Will you have a brainstorming post for the AUing of canon based characters?
>> definitely!

2. Could you explain what you mean by "completing objectives they hide in their app"? This is a little vague and I'm not quite sure what you mean.
>> apps will be screened, and one element of them will just be listing a few potential character objectives which tie them into the setting and, potentially, pcs and npcs. players can publicize these if they want (and some may necessarily become obvious over gameplay)

3. What is the level of NPC involvement going to be in this game - extremely hands on, or generally off and far away? If the former, how do you plan to ensure equal airtime to all players?
>> middling npc involvement, made only by request or in bi-monthly 'court sessions', aka events

4. Are objectives going to be handed out with set limits each month, done as a monthly event, or something else all together?
>> hopefully covered this!

5. Is there a set end in terms of months (1 year run, 6 month run, etc.) or no?
>> wavering on this one, could do a 1 year run with the endgame being the change of power, or just letting it run on?

6. When you say fantasy, are you talking medieval Europe, Middle Eastern, or something else? I'm genuinely curious about the environment.
>> mostly medieval fantasy europe-ish, since i'd already be asking people to AU and that's at least a familiar environ.

7. Maybe because this is tied to point 2 and I'm confused, but your in-action example seems a little convoluted. It makes sense as a player plot which could be initiated by those in question, but the talk of hidden goals etc. when you haven't quite explained how they're supposed to work in terms of the app is confusing. Unless you mean to say that by having these goals on the application itself, it is supposed to encourage CR and plotting, in which case it makes sense.
>> yes! these objectives are supposed to drive cr and plotting, and represent the key points of the progression of your character's personal story.

8. How do you plan to balance information that should stay secret versus information hoarding?
>> if its meant to be public info, mods will post it publicly, full stop. 'information hoarding' is key to politics, so your character can do wth they feel like with things they learn. infomodding will have a 'one warning' policy. second offense is ejection from game.

really happy about your interest, nonny, and would be glad to have your thoughts and concrit! working on pages more tonight, will drop links for you on mon!

I am here with bells on for monthly conspiracy theories, mod-anon, I cannot lie to you at all. The biggest goddamn bells I've got.

Beyond that, thank you for getting back to me so quickly with answers! You clarified pretty much everything, but I'll respond to a few of the points mostly because I have follow ups and you also asked a question or two in response.

2. Okay, this makes a lot more sense. If the apps are to include AU history though, and you're screening them, will you have a required AU History link somewhere in character info pages?

5. Maybe it'd be best to plan for a 1 year one, but keep other options open for continuing in 3 or 6 month chunks depending on how stuff goes?

7. Okay, thank you for explaining this in particular, much appreciated.

8. I ask mostly because people can try and get fingers in pies and then things can seem off balance to others in the player base. Good to know what the approach is though, thank you!

:D I love doing this kind of poking at things, so I'll keep an eye on this thread after I get home from work tomorrow.

I'll give further thoughts on the pages as a sock PM, but honestly I have NO idea how to gauge interest beyond this thread and then the brainstorming post + test drive. other folks might be better to ask!

I also can't tell you much about gauging the overall excitement this game will generate, but I'd be 100% here for it if it happens.
