love ur lack of an ic/ooc divide

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

goty awards means nothing anon.

any gaming award is such a joke, that they make winning a grammy look like you won the nobel peace prize

they mean games are well received and successful. it's not a statement of quality, it's a statement of whether the game had worthwhile success, which is the only measure of quality that actually matters to developers.

you'll notice no one in this thread is trying to say overwatch is a good game or that blizz doesn't need to fix or patch anything about it. it's just some anon tried to say it was a "backburner" game and not a priority for blizzard, and attempting in further comments to downplay how popular the game is or how much money it's making, when all of that is just objectively not true. goty awards are just another factor in that. games that rack up those, meaningless or not, aren't failures or low priority games.

And to put it in perspective, Her Story won a couple of awards too for some reason and ushered in the age of movie and walker simulations. It's a solid thing (game, movie, whatever you want to call it) but not really goty award worthy.

Hell undertale won a goty against Witcher 3, Metal Gear V, Fallout 4, Bloodborne and Splatoon. Which brings us back to the circle jerk since Witcher 3 kept winning awards against those other three.

There's no real set process for goty expect that some rando likes it and has a mag or site.

... did you completely miss the part of the comment where anon said it was a measure of commercial success, not quality?

if GOTY awards from certain big name publications were completely meaningless, game devs wouldn't put them on re-issue boxes/trailers/etc. that shit can sell games. it's a sign of a game being successful. not the *only* one, but it means something.

it means as much as a your mom hanging your drawing on the fridge for aweek.

once again, no one's talking about it being a measure of quality. everyone agrees it isn't. but it is a sign of success. games that tend to win multiple goty awards tend to also make a lot of money and be really popular. goty awards tend to put eyes on a product that otherwise would not because while you and i may be woke to how frivolously they're given out, casual gamers aren't. games that are already doing well will get a boost in sales from the publicity multiple goty awards can bring.

literally no one said it makes a game good, which you still seem stuck on for whatever reason.

you do realize they put it on the box to sell it to people who don't play games (people buying gifts) or little kids

basically the chumps

Re: da, +1

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
a chump's money is worth the same as yours.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
yes but it still doesn't give the award any real worth.

it doesn't give you job security, create any useful connections, or put you in any kind of demand. it's a participation award that nets you maybe 20 more sales, which by the time the goty is given you stop caring if the game sells or not.

Re: da, +1

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
it actually nets significant sales. games that win multiple gotys get significant spikes in sales, especially if they use it to sell bundle editions like the anon below mentioned. arkham asylum's goty edition sold 2.2 million copies alone. and that's not an uncommon number for major titles, which yeah, includes games like overwatch.

you have a weird definition of "worth".

to someone whose ultimate goal is to make money and feed themselves/their family, money is the only "worth" that's gonna fucking matter.

"which by the time the goty is given you stop caring if the game sells or not" holy shit, this isn't remotely true. devs are concerned about how well their product moves even years after the fact these days.

i like goty editions because i'm usually late to games and goty editions tend to have the dlc bundled in

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
See that's a valid argument!

those are the only goty worth it.

it's the same game using its goty status as marketing, though. it wouldn't bother with the label if it was meaningless.
