Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

SA but to make that more relevant to the backburner thing: if people aren't buying loot boxes then ~10 million players isn't going to make that much difference. $40 is overpriced for this game as it is. It's clear to me they don't understand how to balance the game and aren't taking the time and money TO fix it which might make it have more replay value. It's backburner for a company like Blizzard where their main income still comes from Starcraft, HOtS, and, somehow, WoW.

Overwatch is absolutely not Blizzard's priority compared to their main babies. Advertising does nothing when the game doesn't deliver, again. It's not continued income. Overwatch tournaments draw nowhere near the same crowd as SC because the game is considered too casual and broken rn. Fixing glaring issues might solve that, but again. Backburner.

i think we're having too different definitions of what's considered "backburner" here. the game is absolutely making money, hand over first, regardless of tournament turn outs or lack of game balance.

i mean, anon, the data is all there: https://www.vg247.com/2016/12/22/overwatch-brought-in-more-money-than-any-other-paid-pc-game-in-2016/

hell, it's even crushing in the korean market, overtaking league in many ways. it doesn't matter if Blizz isn't stopping to fix the game balance, it's printing money for them, more than any of their other properties currently save for maybe Hearthstone (which does absolutely gangbusters because, hey, mobile gaming).

so i have no idea what you mean when you call it a "backburner" game. it's the company's biggest current money maker (except, once again, maybe Hearthstone and I don't have the numbers on that to confirm or deny, but last I heard it was buried in cash). maybe their priorities with the franchise aren't where you think they should be, but by no means does blizz not care about it.

They're going to have to start caring more if it wants staying power. Again, the game is brand new. It's a hype machine. They put a ton of money into advertising the shit out of it in 2016.

Where is the money going to come from after the initial purchases of $40-$60?

Advertising the game does not equal making it have staying power by fixing massive issues with balancing and maps in the game. That is why it's "backburner" for them. Because their other games already have playerbases that have stuck by them for this long and continue to give them money and so they are given higher priority re: fixing issues.

I do not know how else to explain this to you. You seem to think that just because Blizzard advertised it so much and does all these free weekend things that it means they're paying attention to the numerous concerns they get about the game and the fact the playerbase is already dropping off. The game's not even a year old so I hope that they start listening to the concerns of people who actually play the game, otherwise they're going to lose them. There's only so many times people can initially purchase something.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/overwatch-hits-25-million-players-up-from-20-milli/1100-6447312/ the playerbase hasn't dropped off at all.

my information is based on actual statistical data. yours is all based on feelings about how games should be and how developers should approach them. idk if we're gonna get a common ground here, so it's probably best to just stop.

That's

That's still going off initial purchases

You are going to defend this no matter what, aren't you? No point in talking to you because all you seem to think matters is initial purchase. Holy shit. Do you even play the game? Honest question, because if you pay attention to the wait times and the annoyances being aired on forums then you probably wouldn't be arguing.

Anyway I'm done. Overwatch isn't going to last long if the developers keep spending more time making skins and game modes nobody wants instead of fixing the game.

25 million active players isn't a measure of initial purchase. $600m+ isn't based on initial purchase either.

i like how anon said you refused to bring facts and numbers to prove them wrong, because once again, you brought opinions into it with that comment about people complaining in an online forum about wait times. anon, if we took that as an actual measure of OW's playerbase, then the majority of them hated gay tracer, which is clearly not the case.

da too but uhhh lmao at you both somehow actually thinking 25 million people play overwatch regularly

if you've got data that contradicts that besides your own personal experience and feelings, by all means, share it.

also the wait time thing is real, if you play the game you'd know. they are horrible and seem to have gotten worse

Unless you play on console, there isn't a wait time problem in Quick Play or Competitive Play. I solo queue and wait maybe 5-15 seconds to hop into a game, even on off days like Wednesday. The only time I start having to wait over a minute is when I'm on a team of 4 or more people.

same situation for me, and even seeing friends who play on console streaming, there's never a noticeably inconvenient amount of wait. it's more than on PC, but it's not something i'd call a huge problem.
