You shouldn't have any trouble if you and your friend are apping rifters. Your characters can learn about the Dragon Age world at the same time you and your friend do as players. It's a pretty dense world with a lot of factions involved, but the best way to read up on it is to read what the mods have provided on the settings page.

The game atmosphere is pretty friendly and excited about plots, but as was already mentioned, there was a slump over the holidays and as a game we've just started to pull ourselves from it. I think you'll notice pretty quickly the people who are all talk and no RPing too.
