Yeah, that new info kind of killed Blake for me. Always thought she was an orphan who was recruited by the White Fang. There was like zero foreshadowing about her parents. It makes me wonder if they threw it in as a last minute or if it was really bad writing(then again, RWBY's writing has always been mediocre).

Okay, but that's so obviously a lie. They're making it up as they go, and it shows. There's a lot of imperfection you have to just accept about any start-up show, but if the level of these inconsistencies and sudden/poorly timed plot reveals - God, if they're written that way on purpose, in advance, that's. Alarming.

no one said that explained or excused the quality of the writing, anon. you can have all of those things in a pre-outlined story.

rt has shitty writers and awkward pacing. this is also something that is not news, and this is coming from a rwby fan

One problem is pacing. The show can go very slow at times. Now this is kinda obvious why, they want a 10-20 season run and each major arc to be about three volumes so they have to make sure not to move the plot too fast here in the early seasons. But it leads to times where multiple episodes feel like they could’ve been condensed down and had things flow smoother. The cheaper World of Remnant shorts shows effort in not just leaving the audience hanging when they need a week break, but it doesn’t help the pacing problems.

They also keep some stuff mysterious longer than it needs to be. They want to have lots of twists and turns obviously but sometimes it is done with more pointless things. Any reason we still don’t know Ren’s Semblance? (Note: The new episode coming out the day I post this is Ren focused so it is highly likely we will know it by the time I actually post this. Doesn’t change the fact that volume 4 is pretty late for a main character other than like Jaune because he is an idiot with no real idea how to work Semblances) How about the fact that despite the team being in a 4 on 4 fight, Sun is still the only member of team SSSN we know the Semblance of? We suddenly had the fact there are two creator gods thrown out at us even though the series started with a creation myth so even if reduced down to not mention the four maidens and all of that, why weren’t they there?

It does work at times-Salem being the narrator, Qrow’s bait and switch Semblance, Ozpin being an Oz instead of the Oz. But a lot of the time it is unimportant or takes too long.

Tossing out characters willy nilly. Neo is gone now, the rest of Team SSSN is gone now, Glynda is gone now, Winter is gone now. There is no reason for these characters to not have at least minor appearances except RT just not wanting to deal with them or knowing how to. Even just cameos would work but I guess that’s too much when you need to make the sixth episode of RNJR traveling and having some shit going down. Hell pretty much every living Beacon Student not a member of Teams JNPR or RWBY is totally gone. RWBY just isn’t good to side characters because they make a bunch and throw them away as they please.

Having characters do things to fit the plot not the character. I actually highlighted this in a separate post a long time ago with the earliest example. Ruby alternated between “who needs friends?” And seeming to mean it rather earnestly to “Let’s be friends forever” in volume one based on if they were pushing her character or her team up with Weiss and even then it wasn’t consistent. For a more recent example, why did that one Gryphon decide to eat Roman when it did? Because RT decided they had no more use of Roman so they just did something random to kill him off. As someone who was at the center of the cult of the modern White Fang but escaped, Blake knows the most on how deadly the White Fang are. So even if she was annoyed at Sun for interrupting her and her dad, why would she totally disregard his warnings about them? Because the plot needed her to.

The animation isn’t great. Season one is flat out painful to watch at times. And while the show has improved from “bad with good fight scenes” it’s only improved to “good with good fight scenes and maybe a few great ones.” I get it is a rushed production by a small team and in volume 4 they’re even working with a new program but it still only makes the animation so much more watchable.

There is probably more, especially focusing on volume 1, but that’s all I can think of right now.

you make a lot of good points, anon, although i disagree about roman's death. that gryphon didn't attack him out of the blue, it attacked him because grimm can sense negative emotions and it was drawn to his despair following neo getting blown off the ship. roman genuinely cared about her, and that's what got him killed. in my opinion it was a rather well-written death and not a random way of offing him at all.

i kind of disagree on blake as well; i think it's understandable that she wouldn't take sun's claims about the white fang seriously because of how upset she was. she was a lot more than simply annoyed, and it wasn't just because of him interrupting them, but because she'd been feeling frustrated about his behavior the whole time and that was the final straw.

and about the animation, well, opinions on it are going to vary from person to person. probably everyone agrees that volume 1 was cringe-y a lot of the time, but personally i think volume 3 was pretty nice looking overall, and i've been very impressed by volume 4 so far. the cinematography has improved greatly as well, and i would say that the show is significantly more watchable now.

— actually cinematography probably wasn't the right word to use there... what i was trying to say is that the way scenes are set up and framed and transition from one to another has gotten a lot better, but i can't remember what you would call that at the moment.

DA to add to the criticism, I feel like the way they allocate focus/development on the main characters are off. For example, volume 4 really feels more about Jaune than Ruby(on the Ruby side). We pretty much only get to see Jaune's sadness and pain from Pyrrha's death even though Ruby, Ren, and Nora were her friends and teammates and Ruby saw her die. I'd also add that for someone who they planned to die from the start, they sure as hell didn't give Pyrrha the time and development she deserves. Most of the scenes with her are also with Jaune, and usually focused more on him rather than her. I would have loved to know about Pyrrha's past but guess that's never going to happen until maybe volume 7.

I wasn't thinking of mainpain when I wrote it. RWBY has always been terrible to its side characters and the fact that they stated they didn't know how to write Ruby shows. Jaune is easier to write, and he's also the character for the audience(basically asking what semblance is and whatnot). Not to mention, him being level 0 and a detearagonist would mean that he'd obviously get more development than most other characters. However, I still think that for someone who they planned to die from the very start, Pyrrha should've had more Pyrrha-centric episodes so to speak. Ren and Nora also should've got some say in how they felt about her death instead of just having a sad expression on their faces, as they were her friends and teammates. The writing reminds me of Bleach in a way, the writers just kind of ignores the side characters for the most part, even during times when they should be at least semi-important.

I mean we're not allowed to criticize bad writing if it involves a woman so yeah. fair is fair after all.

Where did you even pick up that she's an orphan? She talked about having parents before.

all she's ever said was that she was "born into" the white fang and "born outside the kingdoms". that's vague enough to go either way.

Menagerie is outside the kingdoms and Ghira was the leader of the White Fang up until five years ago.
