Why does this game make people so angry

I enjoy it but it's hard to even play with my friends anymore since they get so mad and tilted over it when they didn't used to

This seems to be a common problem too. Why Overwatch? I play other competitive team games that don't attract this much ire and bitterness

are they mad over that sjw crap or the actual gameplay?

Gameplay

We used to just laugh or not care about losing but now they get extremely salty

Happens in pretty much all competitive games, especially team games. Virtually every MOBA community has the same problem, though there it can be worse because people will take the time to vent their frustrations in-game.

Pretty much. And it kinda does suck if you don't win every so often and that spirals into a blame hole.

The problem Overwatch has is the same one the vast majority of MOBA games have.

If you're winning cleanly, it's fun.
If the match is balanced, it's fun.
If you're getting stomped, it's a slow and painful death.

Do you play with the same people every time? Because experience has shown me that if you're in a group of friends and one gets mad, the rest tend to follow along. Once I pruned the angry person out of my regular group of friends I play with, it suddenly got a lot more pleasant. It just takes that one person who decides to whine about their death rather than laugh to ruin the entire group mood.

it really does only take one person. i used to play with a group of friends and there was one person who took everything so fucking seriously. we were all pretty casual and would laugh about things blowing up in our faces, but they were one of those 'serious gamers' who would get so pissed any time any little thing went wrong. whenever they started in, the rest of the group got grumpy too, and it wasn't fun for anyone. we'd all usually go to bed mad

I would love to know why I'm so angry at this game. I don't want to be. I want to laugh and have fun, but the other night I ended up in angry frustrated tears over multiple losses. I kept asking myself why I cared because it's just a game so why was I getting so emotional over it? But I have no answers.

I watch YouTubers laugh when the enemy kills them, or when they fail their ult, and I really want to feel that way instead of screaming every time I lose a 1v1 or fuck up my ult. Maybe I'm just depressed and failing at this game doesn't help, idk.

Unlike the people answering that it's their friends who spread the negatively, I solo q so that's not it. Wish I knew so I could have fun again.

honestly, it just sounds like you take the game too seriously. you probably need to take a step back after a loss to breathe.

usually after a loss I give myself a minute to feel absolutely furious or shitty, and then I tell myself its just a game. real life doesn't give a hoot about my MMR, my job, school, friends and everything else don't care about my MMR, and at the end of the day that a loss isn't a reflection of me. you're probably taking the outcome too seriously.

i mean, easier said than done but that's how I learned to stop raging at vidya games.

if you're crying over a video game, you need to go outside and re-acquaint yourself with fresh air and sunshine.

i feel this a lot and realized the other day it might have to do with being the only girl in my group of friends and yet also being one of the ones with the lowest SR outside of the bronze and silver players we have (i'm low plat, everyone else is high plat/diamond). :(

i'm the most knowledgeable about the game (i know most characters' damage output by heart, i know the supposed most effective counters for every character, and i'm usually shotcaller) but because of my actual play skill, i feel like i have to be better than the rest of our team to be considered at the same level as them. this is most likely just self-imposed because all but one of the people i play with thought my placement this season was (in their words) "absolute bullshit and not at all reflective of how much this team relies on you," but that one guy who blamed our losses on "the girl who is shit at reaper" (me) has basically ruined my confidence.

every time i die it feels like i've failed my team, that i'm not worthy to be playing the game, that i'm inherently worse because of my gender- and i know it's stupid, i don't need anyone to tell me that. but irrational or not, these are still thoughts that run through my head.

i've cried over losses, too. it's mostly just frustration. why can't i do this? is a big one. (i also have issues with certain members of the team not liking having a shotcaller, so that's also frustrating, but not your issue in this case)

do you play any of the arcade modes, anon? i've found if you're having a difficult time in competitive, sometimes cooling down with some arcade or quickplay can ease the tilt and help you have fun again. i also recommend taking a break and playing another game that isn't so competitive, or maybe even something that isn't hard at all.

i will say though that this does sound a bit like depression, too. which is okay, you don't have to stop playing the game because you're depressed- but give yourself a break every now and then. play something else or do something else entirely when you start getting tilted. something that makes you happy that isn't dependent on a win or a lose. unless you're the type of person who gets better with anger (i do sometimes), continuing to play is only going to make it worse. the moment your mood goes too pear-shaped to bounce back, just take a break.

do you heal? healers had that stupid thing where their mmr came out way lower than dps for some dumb reason

i do! i play a lot of zenyatta and lucio, though, and they'd said both of them place correctly. i still think they weight it pretty heavy on kills versus deaths, though. while i usually end up with silver on zen, there were a few games where we had so much dps that even though i had maybe 2 deaths, i didn't have a medal for elims. i had 8 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw. granted the loss was a ridiculous stomp on the enemy's behalf, the rest were either evenly matched or stomps on our end.

i smoke weed every time i play and i have a good time so

Coming from someone who recently went on a break because of how mad she was getting, these are my guesses:

- Influx of Christmas newbies. If you play the game solo you might feel like you're being matched with newcomers who don't know the game very well and are being matched against Seagull and pals who decided to go play QP for a bit.

- The current meta and arcade. Basically if you're playing mystery heroes (or even unlimited) and the opposing team ends up with certain characters, you'll not only lose but you'll lose badly.

- The payoff just generally isn't worth it because 95% of loot boxes are three greys and a blue. At this point I look more forward to the coins I make from the dupes than I do whatever I might get from a box.

- Lack of new modes. I played Oasis all of two times because it was a new map, but I fucking hate KOTH.

Also, because I just remembered this: 75% of the time there's a Hanzo AND a Widowmaker on your team. I try not to be one of those "hurdur there's no such thing as a good Widow/Hanzo" types but holy crap we don't need both of them!

nayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-01-20 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
i feel you on the hanzo/widow thing. lately though i've tried being more chill and giving them the benefit of the doubt. the other day i played with a hanzo who was a BEAST and it made me realize that maybe giving up on winning before we leave the spawn is basically just me throwing the game for myself. that hanzo even looked out for me as mercy, which was unexpected but very welcome! i've gotten to the point now where i'm reminding the rest of my team to give the hanzos the benefit of the doubt at the beginning of the game, too.

and hey, at least if we lose, we can blame the hanzo.

Re: nayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-01-21 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
so hanzo is overwatch's equivalent of the hunter class in WoW? picked up by everyone and anyone, nobody's happy to see one, most people suck at it with a few exceptions, and if the group wipes it's automatically their fault.
