Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

This season is presumed to be the last full season, and Johnlock wasn't made canon. That's basically why most people on tumblr are angry.

the only kind of aus i like are "what if" canon aus, like what if character x had been the one chosen for something in canon instead of character y, or what if this one thing in canon had gone differently. when i pick up a character, it's because i'm as interested in their world and their backstory as i am the character themselves, and removing that aspect of them means i might as well have just made an oc with the same appearance and basic character traits.

I also hate it when you basically give a reply to finish up a conversation and then have your character say something to move to another topic and the other player turns it into two conversations. No, the point was to move on and my bracket text even nudges that way.

Well this happens a million times a day to me, but the one that kicked this off was called Final Re:Quest.

Is that it? Seriously?

Stop being so insecure the idea of someone being good makes you uncomfortable.

Technically they are but it's in the context of saying everyone else Hasn't Seen The Light. It's a diss.

Honestly this whole thread answers OP's question in a way that wasn't intended.

+100 to #2. it's different if it's a heavy scene in a log, but i don't need tl;dr in a network or actionspam thread.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
I have a hard time pinpointing it down into a bullet point list, but I would say being IC is important. My favorite people to play against all have/had such a good grasp of their character's personality it, idk, shone in every tag even if it's an incidental action or I'm canonblind. Also being good at keeping track and being aware of what emotions the character was going through, so no repeating a question to something answered earlier in the thread. It's such a mixed feeling to receive a long, elaborately written tag that makes the character come off as a redundant robot because the player forgot what was going on last week.

Not giving unreactable/hookless tags is a given but personally I give more of a pass if the thread is preplanned.

Also agreeing with the last item on above anon's list. Just a little comment about a thread being fun every so often goes a long way.

Apathy is vastly more common than hate, in my experience playing unpopular characters. It might translate into less tag-ins but whatever.

canon divergence is my jam, total setting change is not

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to all of this, with minor exception to 2. i hate useless padding and multiple simultaneous conversations, but don't be afraid of writing long tags if you actually have something of worth to say in them.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
if you grow up hearing it used as a derogatory word, it might not feel great or like something you want to reclaim.

i recently realized after setting some boundaries forced a little distance in our friendship that my closest rp friend is manipulative and emotionally abusive and is never going to change.

a lot of my old friends have been really supportive and welcomed me back after a couple of years of being steadily isolated but i feel really ashamed and embarrassed and the worst part is even though i'm relieved my former friend isn't paying attention to me anymore i also have this tangled snarl of guilt for making them angry at me and worried about wank/drama and worst of all i sometimes think maybe i could just put up with it to keep rping with them.

and then i feel stupid because it's an rp partner and not a marriage, it's not like i'm a battered housewife.

i know this isn't a confessions comm or r/relationships but i was hoping that if anyone else has come out the other side of a friendship like this, maybe you have some advice? especially if it was a fellow rper with whom you had mutual canons/plurk friends/etc.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
All of my favorite rp partners have been good at character voice and have given me tags that were rounded out with ic dialogue, actions, and thoughts.

I care about the text in the narrative or brackets in the sense that I like it better when it's all ic and not ooc commentary. My posts tend to be longer or shorter depending on my partner's style, but as a general rule I don't think anyone should feel pressure to match length. I do prefer to get posts that are consistently longer than a sentence or two, but I've seen people get carried away with introspection. It's a real problem when each little thing reminds a character of something that happened before and they have to think about that episode or chapter or whatever in depth every time.

I'd love to receive at least a tag a day on most of my threads. Right now I'm pretty close to that and it's a huge step up from November and December. For me speed's not usually a dealbreaker as long as there's variation and not a long lull between every post. A little ooc interest shown can help, even if it's just a quick pm.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
don't reclaim it if you don't want to but don't deny the history of its reclamation nor the right of others to reclaim it

hey anon! as someone who plays more ocs than canon characters these days, most of the advice above is pretty good

one thing i can add is to give test drive memes a shot! you can check out the tdm thread on this post to see ones that are open at the moment. since you're playing an oc, the best bet is to tag out rather than doing your own top-level, but it'll help you get a good feel for the game.

someone mentioned how important it is to put in the effort with plotting so i'd also say get a plurk if you don't have one already, cr memes & plot with me memes go around on plurk occasionally and are super useful for oc players. plus building ooc friendships means people are more likely to tag you.

i'm currently in [community profile] overjoyed_ooc right now and everyone has been super welcoming and willing to plot with my oc. it's sci-fi with memloss/au aspects and we have about 40 characters. i can't really speak for any other games since i'm not in them, but if you have any general questions i'd be happy to answer them!

I love people that have such a solid grasp on their character that I can 'hear' the VAs/actor's voice when I read their reply. I love the writers that really plunge into the depth of their character. I love people that bring new twists or advances to a thread and don't just either expect me to carry it all or going through a routine. I do like descriptions, so tell me what they're thinking, how they're standing, what the area they're in is like in little bits and pieces woven through the action and dialogue. Put some flavor into the setting. Basically just make it interesting for me, give me things to work with, write like we're writing a story, not a scene. I love a writer that's so good I feel challenged to be put effort into answering but I'll honesty eat up anything that someone gives me that keeps me looking forward to the next reply by keeping things interesting.

tl;dr give me tags that are interactive/interesting and I'm there

played one of the girls from FFVII back in the wild days of the ship wars. It was an eye opening experience since I'd walked into it without realizing the levels of raeg! some people had going on.

I got really used to avoiding fandom discussions, which was really too bad, but someone was always randomly popping out to bash one or the other of the girls even if the topic was unrelated. Got really used to checking icons before tagging out in memes or anything if they were also playing from 7. Got tagged several times by people pretending they wanted to write with me but then they just tried to use it as an excuse to have their character act ooc and try to make mine look bad or in one case, outright physically attack her.

I had some great threads with amazing writers with her though and the fandom settled down after a while. Everything weighed out, I loved writing for her and had a lot of fun and ended up with some really great rp partners. But I learned to be a bit more careful about random rp and how to pick up on the signs of a bad rper a lot faster. And you better believe, no matter what character I'm writing, I always make sure my ship prefs are listed somewhere easy to find and upfront. Ain't nobody got time for going through that kind of crap again.

Still stay off tumblr though. The levels of vitriol over there are insane for something that the rest of fandom calmed down about over a decade ago.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Basically, they're having nuclear meltdowns over not getting their ship. The same one the creators repeteadly said "it won't happen, sorry".
