Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

your cat has been missing for days because you let it outside

amazing

(Anonymous) 2016-05-07 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
people who purposely let their cats outside don't deserve them.

i hope that their cat was adopted "off the street" and not fucking killed by their irresponsibility.

it's true tho

like i don't wish anyone to experience the pain of their cat getting killed but it is so, so risky to just let your cat wander around outside. if you're going to do that at least get a harness and walk with them. cats are definitely more survivors than dogs are when they're on their own, but they can't predict if some crazy neighbor's going to poison the treat they give them or hell, just fucking shoot them or something. not to mention all the gross diseases and bugs they can pick up outside.

there's no reason to let your cat go outside unsupervised. if your cat won't stop screaming to go out, you're being an irresponsible owner by not providing them with an enriching indoor life by playing with them, providing them things to do/climb on, etc. that's no excuse.

Sorry buddy I live in reverse-o land aka the UK where if you live in a house or ground-access flat and still keep your cat indoors you're going to be considered a weirdo.

I can understand both sides of this when the US has crazier wildlife, and I imagine your level and kind of traffic isn't as easy for cats to learn to watch out for. Also we have some crazy arsehole butchering cats in Croydon. But my family's had outside cats since my mum was a little girl, 5 in my lifetime, and not one has been killed by something from going outdoors. Most other Brits are going to be the same, so it's not a culture that's going to change and will always make these arguments be practically a language barrier thing between the US and UK.

tell us what it's like living with bears and birds of prey

Coyotes will eat cats and live across the entire urban-rural spectrum. Chicago and New York have huge urban coyote populations.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
my country doesn't have those either

tell me more

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry you killed all your native predators or if you live on an island will have native bird populations decimated by feral and free ranging cats

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
the entire spectrum of north-central america

(Anonymous) 2016-05-07 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
in a busy met area sure but that's not universally applicable at. all.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-07 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
keep your fucking invasive species inside.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 04:44 am (UTC)(link)

yes because the wild animals never eat small housepets

coyotes love cats. so do stray dogs. so do hawks.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
yes because coyotes and hawks are universal

(i'll give you stray dogs)

I used to be confused by this sort of statement until someone told me it really is considered cruel to let cats outside in America. Where I grew up (North England) it was almost the opposite, it was seen as unusual and cruel to the cat not to allow it outside access.

Heck, I adopted a cat from the RSPCA (animal shelter) and they wouldn't let me adopt unless I said I was willing to fit a cat flap so the cat had access to the outside.

I guess it's because of a difference in predators? Though that's just a guess. But in the UK we don't really have any predators like bears or coyotes or alligators that can prey on a cat, so it's much safer. Traffic is still a problem, but as long as you don't live near a busy road then it's not so much of an issue.

Tons of people in the US let their cars roam outside. Doesn't mean it's good for the cat or the environment.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
keep your cars indoors, heathens

it's because common perspective has shifted with a greater understanding of things like the ecological impact of free-roaming cats, and the dangers to the cat from parasites and diseases that can pretty much only be contracted by outdoor animals. predators play a part, but they're far from the only factor. look at our parents' and grandparents' generations, and outdoor cats were considered normal in north america too, and the predatory species weren't any different then.

Parasites. Illness. Cars. Humans.

Yeah, sure sounds safe for your kitty. Don't get a damn cat ever again.
