Characters are brought to the time period by the malfunctioning ai captain of a wrecked space ship that is intent on documenting and researching the life forms on the young planet, and their potential for growth/development.
Is the ai idea too overdone? Would people like to see a different reasoning/objective for a dinosaur game set in the past? Does anyone want this?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)i do think the ai thing is a little old, but like anon said, i think it'd be fine because the rest of it is different enough. i'm a little sick of smart ai npcs that people can interact with, though, so if it didn't talk that would be refreshing
how long will the game run, though? will people be more focused on fixing the ai than interacting with the planet? will the ship run out of power/fuel? how do they leave? is it just one of those "you're stuck here until the game dies with no objectives" games?
personally i think it'd be fun if characters had to complete an objective before the ship let them leave. like, getting skin/blood/egg samples from a list of different animals and a bunch of plant and mineral samples. that could be fun. it gives them a reason to interact with the world, and you could turn it in to events if a certain animal or something is really rare. have it pop up only every so often

Good ending 2: Characters escape the planet and find a way to divert or destroy the asteroid (Send it through a Wormhole? Destruction of asteroid into smaller debris?)
Bad ending: Asteroid strike
Without the AI idea, characters would have to figure out survival, maybe dinosaur taming, etc.
As far as the AI itself, less a functional being ordering them around and more just a computer bank that asks for more data/gives objectives.
It wouldn't have a personality so much as just being a provider of instructions and a data analyzer. AI would assume all characters are just crew members.
No underlying 'evil' ai plot, I want the focus of the game to be the dinosaurs and the cretaceous period to be honest. The ship is just a way to provide goals and a few basic supplies to characters and the ship itself would be relatively small/uninteresting to explore.
