there are documentaries where she says it on video. she doesn't call it rape, but she mentions her age and that she lost her virginity to him, so

Re: DA

yeah i think this is why people are being extra pissy about this

1. david bowie is a loved and respected icon, and
2. she says she had fun, the time of her life, etc

that still doesn't make it right. sorry. if bowie was a better person he would not have taken advantage of a 13 yr old girl. i don't care what drugs you were on or that "it was a trend of the time and nobody cared anyway". it's still reprehensible and i honestly thought he was above such a thing.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god are we really falling for ol' I lot my virginity to white snake, bullshit?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
it was the middle of the 60s, she was hanging out with musicians, and i highly doubt anyone thought to ask how old she was if they were all doing drugs/drinking. people make it sound like there was way more information about it passed around than there was. she was a groupie. he was young and high. they mutually fucked. free love. was it bad? yes. but not to the degree of 'david bowie raped a teenager'. it was 'david bowie didn't id while stoned and had mutual sex with a minor'.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
uhhhh it's still rape when it's a 13yo no matter whether he knew or not

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Statutory rape is not the same as what most people consider rape as it's based around the technicality of "X was too young to consent even if they've done it wholeheartedly." An 18-year-old fucking a 17-year-old is also statutory rape, no matter if the 17-year-old was consenting.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
uhhh isn't it rape when you fuck someone who is not in a the correct mind to consent either?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
like above anon said, there's a very big difference between statutory rape and rape. lots of consenting couples get slapped with stat rape because one ages out of the 'acceptable age range' and the parents can use it as an excuse. not to mention there's a huge difference between having sex with someone without their consent and having sex with a minor. tbh, i think the term should be changed to something else because no one can see past the word 'rape', which brings to mind forceful and unwanted sex.

sixteen would have been of the age to consent, which could very well be how old he thought she was. there are loads of stories of 20+ guys (and girls) having sex with minors and not knowing because they either didn't think to ask or they were lied to. if a girl tells you she's eighteen and she looks eighteen, you're not going to ask her for her id. finding out she's twelve or thirteen can come as a legitimate surprise to the other party. it happens a lot and has happened a lot in the past, particularly with famous people. (not to say there aren't some roman polanskys here and there, but there's a difference)

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
the point is that there really isn't a huge difference. thirteen years old is a child who should not be having sex with a thirty-year-old. don't bring up the 17/18 example like it's remotely comparable to what we're talking about.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
We get it, you want the icky cishet famous man to burn in hell.

Even the woman's account in this case states she enjoyed it. She obviously doesn't even think of it as rape, and in this case, yes, she consented and probably at the time believed she was ready like most "I'm Mature For My Age" people can think. It's still fucked up, no one's saying that, but it's not like he forced her down and left her to rot in the gutter.

Re: DA

smh at these "rape tier" excusers

shame on david bowie for doing this, it doesn't matter that he didn't "actually force himself on her"

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
okay? i never said he did? but he still did something reprehensible

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
unless she walked up to him and said 'hi david, i'm thirteen and a virgin and i want you to fuck me', he had no way of actually knowing. i'm not saying that she should have done it or he should have had sex with her, but i'm saying that there is a small bit of leeway to grant him since it's very likely he wasn't aware of her age. if he thought she was sixteen, that was legal.

i don't know why you people think that it's always just that easy to tell how old people are just by looking at them. i know plenty of pre-teens that look like adults and plenty of adults that people still think are kids. we don't age universally. we're not psychic. we don't have our ages on our foreheads. it's not as simple as saying 'he shouldn't have'. if he didn't know, you can't claim the same thing as if he did.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
literally no one thinks that, though. i absolutely can claim he still shouldn't have done it. not knowing you did a thing and not meaning to do a thing does not mean you didn't do the thing, and i don't know why you're so dead fucking set on defending him instead of going "yeah, that was gross, but i still appreciate him for his work/as a symbol"

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at this thread

People are treating him as the scum of the earth for not magically knowing a girl was thirteen

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also an extension of the "I'M MATURE FOR MY AGE" thing, basically. There's a fair number, in my experience, who lie about their age because they believe they should be treated like they're older than they are.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...slightly off-topic, but: which is almost always good evidence that they're not, because if they were actually mature for their age, they would understand that it's not about them and how ~exceptional~ they are

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
if it was the mid sixties (let's say 1965) bowie would have been 18 not 30

just sayin

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
actually, google tells me it was 1972 since that's when she was 13. which would make bowie 25.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
apparently she was 15 when it happened?

there are some conflicting accounts here

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
most reports say 13/14, but she never actually specifies, likely because she doesn't want to bring that up. it was before she hooked up with jimmy page, which was when she was 14.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
well, she was also stoned most of the time during that age, so it's understandable she might not actually remember how old she was.
