when looking at a potential game's taken list, what makes you feel more/less interested in apping there? anything in particular that might influence your decision?

i like small games so if a taken list is divided into multiple pages that tends to be a red flag for me for game size

ratio of big casts to small ones/lcws - are there huge casts (especially canons i don't know or dislike) dominating the game?

average apparent age of characters (i'm pretty canon blind on a lot of big fandoms so it's often guesses from icons if included or from things i think i know about the canons) - will my adult/teenager/special circumstances age character have people in their own age group to talk to or be thought of as annoying by the rest of the game?

having characters from at least a handful of canons i know is nice

I've found the games with the most welcoming cr is the ones that are mostly lcw, so I look for that. Smaller games are a pro, as are no casts that've grown large enough to dominate the game. I dealt with that shit in the homestuck era, I don't need it now.

Castmates are a big one too- I don't tend to app into casts that are already there.

i pass if the game is

- dominated by animanga. i'm not interested in the medium anymore, so i don't know any of the canons/characters.
- dominated by one/two/three casts.
- a majority of young characters. all of my characters are middle aged, i don't want my character to be the only 21+ person there. especially if it's a sex game.
- full of characters/casts i'm not familiar with. in order for me to be invested or even interested in a game, there have to be at least a couple characters i know i'll be excited to tag with. in b4 WELL OMG JUST TRY IT blah blah whatever. yeah, i have, and i've dropped every game that i've gone in to blind. doesn't work for me.

It needs to be fairly balanced in terms of mediums and character age range or I don't even bother digging deeper into the game. I like a good mix of drawn mediums+LA+vidya, and because most of my active characters are over 25/30 and I'm not interested in RPing babysitting, I need other adults to interact with. Doesn't really matter if there's large casts in the game. Chances are slim I'd have any castmates myself.

- how much is popular live action
- how much is popular anime
- how much is under 20
- how much is over (preferring more over, but not most of the game)
- don't have an issue with any medium, just not interested in games that have mostly fad popular canons and child/teen ("adults" aka 19-21 year olds) characters. just sucks that most games are only those nowadays and if i want to play with characters over 25 i have to be into supernatural, mcu, or want to play with shitty wankers.

It can't be dominated by:

* Animanga
* LA (any canon gets crazy insular)
* <25yo characters. Sorry guys, your immature college girl la or animoo shonen screeching like they're 12 isn't an adult :/
* Slice of life canons that don't match up with the setting

- Healthy sized game if it's been running for a while. If it's new I don't care, but if it's old then I want over 30 characters. Doesn't have to be huge, but in my experience small, old games feel like the game itself is just one huge insular clique.

- No one canon dominating the game.

- At least a couple of characters who I can see having interesting CR with my character.

honestly the only time the taken list makes or breaks a game for me is if I'm deliberately looking for castmates and there either are none or my character is already taken.

but otherwise I don't give a shit about casts or medium, the setting/plot/potential is more important to me than too many teenagers.

if it's all animanga, i likely won't bother. i like at least a quarter to a third to be la. if i don't know any canons at all, i also likely won't bother. i don't think i have to know all canons at all times, but i'd like to have at least a couple chars that i know/like/want to play against. outside of people like ken/kaeyvin/stormy, i don't care about what kind of players are in it, though apparently selwyn killed a game, so i'd nope out of that. and of course, if my char is taken.

i won't join if there are a number of characters that i know who wouldn't fit in the setting, the game is dominated by kids (i mostly play adults and playing babysitter to kid characters is the same ol' boring shit), or is full of casts. sorry, i like lcws.

huge cast dominating the list when i'm a potential cast mate: i'll think very carefully about it but usually i prefer smaller casts so i'll probably decline unless they're really good at talking me into it.

some sprinkles of 25+ aged character (look i'm reasonable i'll take what i can get but if there's more than sprinkles hell yes gimme gimme): here i come

I definitely don't want to be the only LA character in the game, or the reverse. Having characters that I know and think will mesh with mine is a bonus, but it's not very important.

i'm a lot more interested in any game if fandoms i like take up at least 30% of the taken list tbh; i have a lot of fandoms across various mediums so it's not too tough to find.

i've also been in this hobby long enough that i recognize a lot of dwrpers and mostly know what i'm in for oocly. i appreciate it when taken pages also list the players next to them because of this; if that info's locked down or something i tend to get suspicious.

if there isn't at least one canon I know and like, I get a little "eh" about it and check what the game is made up of. I'll then pass if:

- it's mostly LA
- there are an excessive amount of Western comics and cartoons

but if there are at least a handful of characters I can picture CR with I'll give it a shot regardless.

that's really it. medium doesn't really matter one way or the other; if they're a bunch of animus or las or whatever i'll still be game if i see characters i like

but if it's a bunch of characters i don't even recognize, or twenty million characters from drama fandoms like su, i can't nope out fast enough

Lots of LA. I tend to play from video game canons that are going to have anime art. I just can't seem to get tags in LA dominated games with that sort of character.

My character being taken. I'm usually looking for one particular character so it's not a case of I could play someone else.

Only really popular canons seem to be represented. That tends to imply a large number of players who won't tag canons they don't know and means I'll be fighting for CR, no thanks.

OCs from Vampire the Masquerade, especially if they are played by mods. I've yet to meet a player who plays these and isn't a problem player. Also just OCs that in general look hideous at first glance and imply the game has poor standards.

It's not worth it, it's never worth it. Too often my hero older guy/girl ends up as the de facto dad/mom figure constantly pulling their asses out of the fire, being the brunt of REBELLIOUS TEEN ANGST or source of constant comfort, and players getting upset that my 30 year old character might prefer to make friends his/her own age :/

games dominated by live action

mostly because i play teen characters from shonen shows including sports anime and live action players constantly bitch that they hate those and don't want to play with them here

none of them are the loud childish idiot type but i'm not going to bother risking getting kneejerk snubbed

i keep thinking about just quietly making adult au expy ocs with live action pbs to avoid the snobbery since a few of the games that really interest me are live action dominated

In the past I used to go in blind to the taken list because I would join based entirely on premise or on invites from friends.

Now I double-check the same standards as y'all; I swing to less anime characters, but also check for a healthy population of adult characters.

I also check to see if the OC population's doing fairly well. Usually games don't have more than a handful, but if the ones that are there are substandard in some way (my gauge often goes by urban-fantasy LA-PB's who are especially arrogant or 2 cool... and I'd be lying if very badly drawn icons weren't a sign, but more of what I'm looking at is how thought-out the character is and whether their history and world are rich and fun to read about!)
