Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. HOW DO YOU CANON REVIEW/WRITE YOUR APPS?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
How much research, time and effort do you put into it?

If it varies then talk about your most recent or currently in progress app

Logging in is optional

honestly i'm pretty shit at reviewing

i'll just go back and skim over the parts that contain my character, slow down and actually reread/play for Super Important Moments that are ~transforming~ or whatever, but those are few/far between

it takes me 20 min tops. often after i'm accepted i'll do it a couple more times for voice but

overall i'm a lazy fucker i guess

I don't feel comfortable apping/playing the character unless I've recently reviewed the entire canon. It's a personal quirk and it's a pain in the ass, but I do know most people find it easier to play a character fresh off a canon review.

I'm just pretty sure most people don't end up canon reviewing almost every single time they app a character. ):

I put a lot of effort into canon reviewing. If it's not unreasonable, I'll go back and rewatch/replay/reread the canon and copy down lines I fine important to the characterization of the character I want to play. If at all possible, which often times it isn't, granted, I'll copy down every bit of dialogue the character has so I can easily reference it if need be.

I do this too. I compile notepads and private entries filled with important references I'll go back to and, well, refer to as much as I can.

I also like to write down parts of their body language so that I get a better feel for writing it out in text.

I don't usually tend to spend more than a couple of hours on my apps at most. As far as research goes, if I like a canon then I've probably already watched/played/read it more than once before I even apped from it. I usually go back and watch a few scenes/read a few parts with my character in it right before I write the app, but that's about the extent of what I do.

I've apped to over a dozen games and I've never been asked for revisions or rejected yet so clearly this works just fine for me.

I try to review as much as possible, unless it's a character I know so well/whose voice I really feel I have down enough that I don't need to. Maybe not the whole canon, but definitely the most relevant parts of it.

I actually do a lot of canon reviewing for some characters after I app, too. I have more trouble maintaining some than others...

I grab a notebook and jot down important lines and conversations. I take notes on stuff I don't think I'll remember and then some. I really only use the stuff when I first start playing, but it's helpful to have the information on paper for me.

For me, it helps to write down every single thing that's going on while I watch. It's definitely way too much tl;dr for an app, but it's a good reference. Yeah, there's a wiki that I could check, but if I watch it and then write it and then reread it, it's easier to remember.

Then I make a copy of that for the app and trim that shit down. For my last app (for a MLP character), it was about a paragraph or two for each episode that they had an "important" part in. For my current app (for a drama show character), it's about 800-1000 words per episode so far. I think 1000 words per season is a good maximum word limit, but I try to keep it as low as I can without getting rid of too many things that I consider important.

I try to work on the personality section while I watch too, at least to add a checklist of traits. Friendly, naive, kind of an asshole, whatever. Then I add onto that later. Appearance sections are always pretty easy. I always delude myself into thinking that samples are sooooooo easy so I save them for last, and then I struggle with them because I suck. And then I proofread and reword everything fifty times until it's "almost perfect enough" and submit it... and maybe edit a few things anyway because I have problems.

I obviously put a lot of effort into this and take longer than most roleplayers would. I know that it's pretty unnecessary, but what if I need to know that this character read a certain book in her English class or that she's interested in, I don't know, some band?! Or some other useless shit. I've gotten my past two apps done in 1-2 weeks though, so the one that I'm working on now'll probably take 1-2 weeks, maybe 3 if I slack off a little.

I just fucking love tl;dring, as you guys can tell. At least this keeps me from apping twenty characters and overwhelming myself...?

This is assuming I've already read/watched/played the canon, because why else would I be apping them, but I'll do another quick runthrough and maybe jot down any dialog/important quirks the character might have. The app itself doesn't take more than a few hours tops, but this also includes the fact that I refuse to write history sections (or apply to games with history sections, they just feel so redundant) so it's really only personality + samples.

I canon review by making icons, usually. If it's a manga, I save every page that the character is on into a folder, so that I can make the icons and have them at hand for when I need to go "well fuck how'd this character react in this situation again".

But most of the characters I play are from movies, which means canon review is watching a movie and maybe chattering at someone about it. Pretty easy canon review.

Usually if I'm playing a character, it's because I know their canon backwards and forwards and really love them. I don't pick up new muses often.

I don't write apps unless I've gone through their canon start to finish at least once since I decided to pick them up as a character. That way I can pay special attention to them specifically and get a better grip on their little mannerisms and turns of phrase.

Canon reviews are easier. I just reread or replay with a focus on my character's big scenes.

Varies depending on the canon. Most recent one was also a bit more than I'd normally put in because of the sheer mass of canon, a lot of it not yet translated as well.

Normal for me would be to review a script for the game (I usually app from video games) and if one doesn't exist, then I make it starting with the scenes my character is in and often end up just doing the rest and posting to a site like GameFAQs to help other players. Making a script of my own is more normal because I play from the more obscure games, so I end up playing again or at least watching a playthrough because of this.

I generally play from lengthy shoujo series so doing an entire canon review tends to be a little too much to ask-- most characters I play have their main development in about three or four volumes, so I'll read their part in those and go from there.

If it's a series with a lot of background and worldbuilding or scheme-heavy or whatever kind of setting I think it's also important to gauge what in particular your character would be aware of (if it's a main character that... gets obvious, but secondary, not so much).

Depends. Usually only a little bit of important moments.

Re: HOW DO YOU CANON REVIEW/WRITE YOUR APPS?

It depends on my canon. For example, one of the characters I play is from a 12 issue comic miniseries. I read the whole canon for that guy when I want to canon review. Another character I play is from a currently ongoing show in its fifth season. I pick and choose the fuck out of episodes I want to watch for that guy, but I'll usually only watch two to five eps.

As for my currently in progress app, I plan on taking my character from an early point in canon, but I'm definitely watching his origin episode as well as one or two of the focus episodes he has.
