AUGUST EVENTS

(Anonymous) 2014-07-29 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)i hope they're not planning on having every second month be a monster-slaying event (especially if that's the only event as it is this month), because that's going to get really stale even if each monster has a different twist.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 02:40 am (UTC)(link)already said in this thread; be the change you want to see. go post in the ooc comm and ask about plot ideas. say you'd like (x) to do something this month that's not just boon event related. i'm almost willing to bet you a month's paid that you'll get at least one person to get back to you about a player plot.

Re: dda
(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)The best way to get sent on a quest or something is to use your boons in ways not purely materialistic and especially to do the royal audiences, where they'll often send the characters off to do quests and the like. If you can manage it, have your character just ask for things to do and you're likely to have something sent your way.
Failing that, if you have CR with people who get sent off on that kind of thing, your character is bound to get invited along.
Re: dda
(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 02:16 am (UTC)(link)For some reason, lately it's become a thing that people don't want to plot things with a limited number of participants on the OOC comm, but as it is it feels like you're going to miss out on pretty much everything if you're not active on plurk or don't have the right people added. Even for plots that are totally closed off, it would help to post about them a little bit because, as someone who just doesn't have time to read every single post and thread, I'm starting to feel overwhelmed in terms of knowing what the heck is going on around here.
Re: dda
(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)If all you're doing is waiting for someone to come up with an idea and put it somewhere you can access it, that's not really good enough. There's loads of things you could do that are both NPC related or player plot related. PM people you're interested in. Make an OOC post in the comm. Use the game for what it's made for and please stop expecting things to just be available. The people that are actively doing things are the ones that are out there playing and plotting and getting invested. Why? Because they're actively trying to do things. If you hear about something? Ask about going along. Maybe put up "Hey, I'd like to do an adventure in the woods/looking for a unicorn/want to go get married to a mermaid" post and see who wants to come along with you.
Be the change, anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 06:08 am (UTC)(link)tl;dr honestly if you're putting yourself out there and expressing interest I'm sure someone will grab you for plotting. if that's not happening fast enough for you (and I don't mean that to be bitchy) then see other anon's advice and just try not to get too discouraged if you don't get immediate bites. it is good advice and persistence pays!
if you want to toss out a sock account I'd also be happy to try plotting with you too.
Re: dda
(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)At the same time, we could benefit from having some plots perhaps a little less spontaneous, where a more open call to participation (whether ICly or OOCly) to draw in people who might not necessarily get drawn into the more spontaneous seeming plots.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 05:38 am (UTC)(link)not to say that there's no other possible kind of events that would work well for new players while still adding some variety, i just see why it's been happening so far and i can't blame the mods for sticking to what works and saving their creativity for the in-between months. using up every good idea that comes to mind right away is a pretty good way to burn out mods and quickly run out of ideas for a game that's clearly meant to be long term.
thank you for the crit!
This event in particular was also a direct result of how many individuals kept their stars; had the total been ten or less, the event would have been entirely different!
All that said, we really encourage and welcome folks who have meaningful thoughts or suggestions like this to actually bring it to us in the questions/suggestions/crit areas, or even just to PM us directly!
Re: thank you for the crit!
(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)My major concern with a majority of the events being combat related is that, I've found in games that have been similar, it's easy to get either constantly left out (if you have a non-combatant character and don't want to play them getting injured/rescued all the time) or burnt out (if you do have a combat-oriented character but don't want to play the same type of thing over and over).
I myself do play a character who is skilled in combat, but unfortunately am at a loss for ideas this month because they weren't invited to Redgate but anything I come up with for the actual event is too similar to something I already did very recently (especially with the big battle that just went on). I'm glad player initiative like what you linked is allowed as well, but it won't make much of a difference for people whose characters don't have abilities that are relevant to the current event. Two players asked about fire abilities, for example, and were told that they'd have no effect, so lots of players don't have the opportunity to participate in a unique way. Not everyone needs something special to do every event, but things do start feeling samey after a while if you never really get to!
I get keeping events simple, and for the record, I think you guys do a great job with NPCs and player plots and you're really, really involved as mods to an impressive extent. Basically, I agree with everything Korra's player said in the plot post. However, a bit more variation would be nice in mod events as (as has been mentioned) many player plots are closed or have very limited slots and not everyone has ideas for big player plots of their own.
I'm glad so many different player plots are allowed, but mod events can be great springboards for the new CR that is often required to participate in player plots. If combat has to be a focus a majority of the time for plot reasons, other twists (like being able to calm things down instead of killing them last event, which was great!) or things to encourage new CR (characters being sorted into random smaller groups within their court, etc) would be awesome, too. As it is now, it's pretty easy for people who haven't built up a lot of strong CR to make plots with to feel like they don't really have anything to do that they haven't already done, and can get stuck in a loop of "not invited to player plots because they don't have much CR" > "have trouble making new CR because they're not involved in player plots". Mod events are usually the only things open to absolutely everybody, so more variety would help people who feel stuck on the sidelines get more involved until they're "in" enough to go do things with other character or have enough reason to seek something out on their own!
Re: thank you for the crit!
Not a lot of time to give a very comprehensive reply, but please rest assured that we're going to take this to heart and try to format a few things slightly differently to allow for expanded participation. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)1. Attend the monarch meetings. It's a good way to get plots even if your character doesn't have much in the way of CR yet. Sometimes characters get missions just for asking a question, so even if your character wouldn't outright ask for something you can still try.
2. Ask for boons that you could make plots out of. A lot of people spend their first few on pets, things from home, and power-ups, which are fine but not great for plotting. Ask for something your character can DO.
While I think mod events could stand to have a bit more variety, plotting with your CR or being invited to someone else's plot isn't the only other way to get something to do.
