Bigby Wolf | The Wolf Among Us

I'm in the process of reading the comics, but any general advice would be appreciated.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't use the comic as the be-all-end-all of Bigby's personality because Bill Willingham writes a very different Bigby than Telltale does. I would only use the comic to fill in whatever gaps you have with his backstory, the extent of his powers and how he came to fall in love with Snow. Don't do too much canon mixing because, again, it really shows that TWAU had different writers on staff. Even if you picked all the jerkass options in your playthrough, Telltale!Bigby is much less morally ambiguous and open with his emotions than comic!Bigby is.

My advice is to pick an alignment and stick with it, but always keep in mind that there has to be a grey area. If you plan on playing a good guy Bigby, keep in mind that even at his most compassionate he's still very blunt and doesn't care about hurting feelings if he has to. Likewise, the previously mentioned jerkass Bigby can still be vulnerable. It's all about balancing out the good with the bad.

All of this.

Comic!Bigby is a completely different beast compared to the game. If you want to fill out backstory use aspects of the comics, but don't try to smush the two together. Especially with how much of a tonal shift the comics are in comparison to TWAU.

Adding as an afterthought and also to illustrate this anon's point: Bigby's motivations for being sheriff are different in the game. In TWAU, the game's main theme is redemption. Telltale!Bigby shows genuine regret for his past ("I thought we were supposed to have a new start here. I can't change the past."); whether he makes a real effort to fix things or takes his anger on everyone's ingratitude depends on how you played him, but the point still stands that he's not at all proud of his past. In the comic, it's pretty explicitly implied that he doesn't regret anything and only became sheriff to get closer to Snow White.

You could honestly get by with just reading the Book of Fables entries because they cover everything you need to know about the setting and Bigby's past/powers, imo.

Thank you guys so much! This helps a lot. I'd noticed how different he was in the comic compared to the game, but I wasn't sure if I was just reading into things a little weirdly - it's good to have confirmation that it's not just me.

I'm pretty sure I know how I'm going to play him now, so it's just a matter of finding a game that fits. Thanks!

np man, I was exactly the same way when I tried playing him. It helps to just block out the comic lmao

good luck!

Remilia Scarlet | Touhou

Played her once before and got some pretty good feedback, but I've never felt like I was doing her enough justice, so any tips would be great, especially re: her vocabulary and speech patterns, how rude/how not rude to play her as, showing her childishness without getting too out of character; anything, really.

And a general Touhou question: how do you guys stick to being IC when the character is translated differently between games?

medical/doctor characters

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
anyone have any good information or resources that could help someone who wants to rp a medically-inclined or doctor character and pull them off without sounding like a total noob? i know they will use basic first aid at the very least so i will research that, but just in case people start worrying about anything more advanced than a simple flesh wound

Re: medical/doctor characters

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No, because you haven't told us what kind of doctor they are, what era they're from (if they're from Earth at all), what they specialize in, or any of that good stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
modern day earth! i should have specified; i didn't even think of the variables...

What's their specialty? Where do they work? Doctors tend to be pretty specialised! In RP you probably don't have to get overly specific, but it'll still factor in: a general practitioner will know how to deal with common illnesses and basic injuries, but they shouldn't be performing surgery or reverse engineering RP plague events. A surgeon is going to have a specialty, and probably not be an expert in, say, infectious diseases. Do they work in a large hospital with a large staff? They're probably used to having nurses or techs do a lot of the mundane tasks: for example, they might not draw blood very often, and they'd be used to having techs and computers do the tests for them. On the other hand, if they work in a small clinic, they would probably do more of the little tasks themselves, but also have less experience with "hospital" injuries and illnesses. (For example, you're not going to go to your family doctor if you've been stabbed.) Medicine is a team effort with a lot of specialists and roles!

Locke Cole - Final Fantasy VI

(Anonymous) 2014-07-29 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What are things to keep in mind? Thinking of taking him from the beginning of the game. Any advice will be appreciated.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so, basically, his entire arc is summed up as him coming to terms with Rachel's death, his part in it, letting go of the past, moving forward with the future, and all of that good stuff. The earlier you take him, the less resolved things will be which is an of fucking course moment, but is still important to keep in mind.

His compensation methods could be summed up as follows: fix what happened through any means necessary, and find the nearest lady (or cause in general) and protect the shit out of her (or cause in general). Not exactly healthy, but not as bad as it could be.

Like, with the later he's got enough of a sense of proportion that, when he had to head to South Figaro and the rest escape elsewhere, his reaction was less "No! Only I can protect Terra! She can't leave my side what if something happens???" and more like a "Whelp gotta do what I gotta do take care Terra gonna sneak in a jab at Edgar before I bail 'k done." It's not like he's a neurotic wreck who throws himself at the nearest lady in an attempt to soak up bullets for her. More like if there's a good cause he sees he'll need to be crowbarred off because he's going to find some way of protecting her.

Also has chronic hero syndrome in general. But...consider. Kefka's Tower arose. This was obviously bad. The Light of Judgment was fucking shit up. Setzer drank, Sabin went about rescuing people, Terra protected orphans, and Locke just went off because he had a good lead on Phoenix and that trumped everything else. He has his priorities, and they could be summed up as save Rachel, protect ladies, protect people in general and hero away in general, live a normal life.

The resurrection method seeking thing is the less healthy of the two compensation methods, since essentially he ended up traversing the world in search of a resurrection method. If he was a FMA character he'd definitely end up either as an alchemist or with an alchemist buddy/network of people who know alchemy/etc. And there would be a homunculus Rachel roaming around. Or...if he was from Final Fantasy X he'd rack up a lot of hours at the Farplane apologizing to Rachel. (Either that or avoiding her entirely because he can't face her. Actually, probably this. And she'd possibly end up as an Unsent because of something he did.)

The thing with Locke is that he's got these intense issues driving him forward but he's pretty good at keeping it together. He's cheerful. He jokes around. He makes friends. Unless there's a specific trigger (e.g. they all get drunk, there's an event in which they see shades of their past, he sees Rachel) he's probably not going to randomly break down weeping. He'll just be a chill dude who likes to protect people if the opportunity occurs in front of him (he's not going to roam the world in search of ladies to protect, but he'll take his chances as they come) and will have an intense interest in anything that resurrects things. Or anything that could resurrect things. The Cosmic Cube or Phoenix Force from Marvel? The Grail from Fate/? Replicas and Tales of the Abyss? All things that'll ping him. Very hard. Not enough where it's like, "Whoa, wait, chill, dude." Nor enough that he'll casually shove Steve Rogers into a woodchipper and steal the Cosmic Cube or some other artifact of great power. Dude's not evil, just really driven. But he'll have an interest in them.

Besides that...he prefers to be a treasure hunter and not a thief but he's totally a thief. If he's got the opportunity to steal shit have him steal shit, but it's gotta be a good opening as the dude sort of errs on the side of...needing a reason to steal things that isn't just he felt like it. But, if he's got a reason, he'll just go for it and strip you naked. If that makes sense. To compare him to other thieves, Yuffie would be the mad klepto of the team, Zidane and Rikku with a little more restraint (they wouldn't necessarily steal from the heroes trying to save the world, and they'd probably leave their neighbors alone in the jamjar they end up unless the neighbors are dickwads in which case...) but they'll still just go for it without shame, and Locke's more like the guy who needs to know that okay, the target's from the evil Empire...okay, he'll jack the keys and their wallet too. He needs a bit more justification. And wouldn't identify himself as a thief. And would VERY FIRMLY reject labels of that kind.

Major Kira Narys / Star Trek Deep Space Nine

(Anonymous) 2014-07-30 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there, I've been wanting to get back into playing some characters from......slightly older Trek fandoms than the reboots, I've wanted to play around with a few of my DS9 muses. I'd love some advice for RPing as Major Kira? I always found her really interesting (mostly because I consider Nana Visitor to be one of the best actressess on modern trek.) I'd just like general tips, maybe good episodes to canon review, etc.

First tip: get her name right. It's Kira Nerys, not Narys.

Do a canon re-watch, or at least give a solid read through Memory Alpha, because DS9 had the most political story of the 90s Trek shows and there was so. damned. much. of it

Thanks much, anon! Thankfully all of DS9 is still on netflix, and thankfully since I'm doing a pre-Tears of the Prophets canonpoint, I can avoid watching that really bad last season.
