Okay

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

You can only partially blame CLAMP for the fucked up character designs. If you look at the original concept art for Code Geass, almost all of it looks fine. Some of it is even great! Very stylized and full of noodle people, but not nearly as jagged and overly angular as the anime.

The issue was the CLAMP had never designed characters exclusively for anime before, so they didn't know how to really adjust and compensate for the necessary changes that come with adapting something from illustration to animation. On the other hand, the animation director also didn't compensate enough and tried to stay too faithful to the original designs.

tl;dr: yes, it's partially CLAMP's fault, but Sunrise really dropped the ball, too.

Doesn't every adaptation of CLAMP manga look laughably bad too? Maybe people should just give up on trying to animate noodle people.

There are some exceptions! Blood-C actually looks pretty good, but its another case where they knew from the start they were designing for an anime rather than just a manga. If you look at the designs they're pretty different from both the Code Geass style and their normal style, so I'd say they learned from the CG disaster.

Holic looked alright. I'm pretty sure that's only because the manga and the anime both were intentionally a little surreal, but the end result is that the stranger bits of the animation aren't so jarring so it still gets a pass.

Honestly, though, the only two anime adaptations that were actually any good are Chobits and Cardcaptor Sakura, both of which predate their super stylized noodle people stuff. Everything else is trash.

Rayearth was also good, though it also predates the noodle people as well.
