my character has a middle initial that is never explained, and it's always used when the character's introduced (even by himself) in canon so i figure it's pretty significant to him. i think it's his mom's surname, and like to think of it as the surname of one of my favorite teachers in high school who's of the same cultural background as the mom.

as someone who has their mother's surname as their middle name, i approve

it's silly, but i think it's nice to have that little bit of extra connection to both family lines.

I always assume its the mothers middle initial tbh even if im a bit unclear about MI rules in Japan

Japanese people don't have middle names at all.

I have a friend who keeps her mothers maiden name as a middle name, not to mention manga is generally really confusing about this. It's even worse when there're clear western influences like in One Piece.

There's a character in one of my fandoms who has an unexplained middle initial, and when questioned about it, the creators said that they didn't know what it stood for, and then jokingly said it stands for "Sexy".

So my headcanon is that he never had a middle name, and he gave himself that name to seem cool in college (he is not cool and never was).
