Thankee sai

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

How do you feel abotu American character using British spellings and turns of phrase

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's scientifically proven to make you 100% classier.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
who cares? i'm american and i sometimes use british spellings/phrases. mostly cause i talk to a lot of british people, but nobody like side-eyes me for it or anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
then why the fuck can't it work the other way around

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Spoilers: Yes we do. We're just too polite and British to tell you that. It makes you look like a pretentious tool.

it's very obnoxious and even offensive if it's obvious you're putting it on

...but why though? It's perfectly normal for people to pick up sayings and phrases from the people around them/people they talk to, consciously or not. For example, I'm from northern California, and it makes me laugh when my not!northern Californian friends have picked up "hella" and "like" from me, most of them not meaning to. One of my british professors has a particularly emphatic way of saying "Blast!" and it pops into my head sometimes.

I mean, deliberately injecting language-isms (British, Japanese fanspeak, whatever) in a way that feels fake and forced is obnoxious no matter what, but a little language bleedthrough/occasionally borrowing happens all the time.

Is it really that common for people to unconsciously acquire new vocabulary from people they spend relatively little time with when the rest of their life is spent around people who never say those things or speak that way? Especially when the former group is RP people on the internet, whose voices you never even hear most of the time? This has not happened to me.

Happens to me all the time. I'm like a speech quirk sponge. And I don't even realize I'm doing it until after.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I also do this because:

a) I used to be on a forum with a bunch of Brits, so it became habit

b) I play a character from the UK, so it's easier to stay consistent if I adopt the spelling quirks. The slang is bleed over.

Haven't encountered that as much because most rpers seem to be from the states, but Glee kids shouldn't be talking about pulling or gits or anything like that either.

Although I do have to snicker whenever male characters mention suspenders, as they're what you guys call garter belts over here. Got used to pants being used to mean trousers, though.
