i judge people who are 20+ and don't have a driver's license because they're "too scared to drive." not having money for a car is one thing. and sure some weird people prefer to take the bus. but if you're letting a fear everyone has (driving for the first time) stop you from being an adult then something is wrong with you.

i make an exception for people who live in big crowded cities too because public transportation/walking/biking is always easier but otherwise yeah.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
which is better: one less danger on the road, or an accident waiting to happen?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
... ???

you could describe life as nothing but accidents waiting to happen, that's not a great argument

i don't drive because i don't want to drive.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
then you don't apply because you aren't someone who has no license because they're too scared to drive, dumbfuck. congratulations

I'm a driver, but judging your raging insecurity. Being apprehensive about driving is perfectly reasonable. As long as nobody's asking you for rides, why do you care so much?

or we know that we'd be a genuine hazard on the road. the bar for who's allowed to drive is way too fucking low.

get over yourself.

i got my license in my 20s and i agree with you. i wish someone had sat me down when i was a teenager and forced me to learn; it's only been since i started driving that i realized how much i'd held myself back by not bothering. i had all the excuses in the book, too: poor eyesight, difficulty judging distances, no need of a car while i was in college because of a good bus system, i don't go anywhere anyway, ~*~not everybody has to be a driver, they're all just picking on me~*~ and it wasn't until being a non-driver started costing me jobs that i sucked it up and got licensed.

I'm not legally allowed to drive because I have epileptic seizures.

I don't see how this makes me "not an adult." I know you specified people who were scared to learn as opposed to people with medical conditions like me, but the implication is still that people who can't drive aren't adults.

partially agreed in the sense that i think everyone should know how to drive even if they don't actively do it just because you might end up in a situation where you need to be able to drive. i don't own a car because i live in a city with good public transportation and it's cheaper to use that than it is to drive, but i still have a license and could drive if i really needed to.

it's a pretty basic life skill.

I'm 34 and I got in a severe car accident when I was 17 (driving) that caused the death of someone in the car.

Fuck you, I'm never driving again.

I live with someone who refuses to learn how to drive. He never pays me gas but sometimes he buys me food so I guess it works out.

I wish he would learn however so he doesn't have to rely on me to go anywhere. So that he could have the freedom and independence to go where he wants when he wants. We don't live in a city and you need a car to go anywhere.

Lately his job is being downsized (he works in IT) and his position is being threatened because he refuses to learn how to drive. They want more on-all people instead of in-house. I try my damnedest to get him to learn and he pouts and whines like a stubborn child and says he'd rather lose his job than learn.

He doesn't think it is but it is a burden.

Driving scared me as a teenager, and even though I did get over it and get my license - and am a lot more comfortable with it now than I was, although live in a city with good public transport and don't have a care of my own - it strikes me as an incredibly reasonable fear. People are so blase about it because driving is ubiquitous, but the truth is, driving is literally one of the most dangerous things we do in our lives. Cars are two-ton speeding death machines that unlike horses - who also scare me - can't think or stop for themselves. More people could stand to have a healthy fear of the risks and consequences of driving, imo.

i have a variety of mental disorders that make me extremely likely to fly off the handle

i can usually handle it when im like, talking to someone but i sometimes wind up doing stupid shit like kicking the wall hard enough that it hurts my foot

im not putting someone else at risk by getting in a car

that said i usually take the bus or the taxi and if i do have to have someone drive me somewhere i pay for the gas

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
i'll be sure and go have a panic attack on the road then

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
ive been driving almost 20 years but controlling a large metal box at potentially life threatening speeds though hundreds of other large metal boxes that HOPEFULLY know what they're doing (but you never know) is a very reasonable thing to fear if you ask me

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Is it a fear of driving for the first time when they've already done it and they're still scared though?

seriously though some people are a legitimate road hazards and shouldn't make themselves drive just to be 'more adult' especially if easily startled or prone to panic attacks. Just because plenty of people who aren't scared can't drive worth a damn doesn't mean we should put more people who can't drive worth a damn on the roads, especially if their 'can't drive worth a damn' is 'may flip shit and go off the road at slight provocation.'

Driving itself is pretty fucking scary, the third time driving I was almost hit by semis breaking road rules three separate times in three separate locations.

I'm a 20+ driver and I'll admit that I get highly nervous when it comes to driving on highways. People on highways drive like insane people and a lot of accidents tend to happen on highways. I rather take back roads to get where I need to go. But if the highway is a must route, I rather have someone else drive than me.
