general question

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a popular consensus on how to deal with characters who are from family-friendly canons, but their characterization is such that if they weren't under those constraints, they would totally be using profanity?

I say go for it. If someone complains just explain your reasoning from canon.

tbh it really bothers me when people go "but they would TOTALLY be swearing if it weren't for *whatever*!" and then proceed to have their characters swear like sailors

it usually reads as really jarringly out of voice for me, and not everyone is going to swear all the motherfucking goddamned time just because they are a MATURE! ADULT! *INSERT TRAIT THAT IMPLIES SWEARING!* because a lot of people just don't swear at all or keep it to a low level, or have certain words that they WILL NOT USE. (I have never heard my mom say the word fuck, frex.)

and when it gets to the point where they are swearing every other line, it sometimes seems like the player is trying to hard to look like they're playing a totally mature character for real! in a really juvenile way.

Fair enough! I am also wanting not to stray too far from the constraints of canon because they're part of what makes it what it is.

I never mentioned swearing every other line though. That would be extremely dumb.

fair enough, op C: i've definitely seen people do it, but i will trust you know where the line between extrapolation and tryhard is!

If they wouldn't use profanity in canon then it would be ooc to have them swear. Simple.

Re: general question

I think it kind of depends.

Like, you've got a character like Calhoun from Wreck-It Ralph, who'd totally be fucking abusing profanity if she was from a different canon.

"All right, ladies! The kitten whispers and tickle fights stop now!"

"Doomsday and Armageddon just had a baby and it is UGLY!"

"You wanna go pee-pee in your big boy slacks? Keep it to yourself."

And so forth and so on. Lots of family friendly cursing. And it would be really off if you plunk her down in...I don't know, Crux Fleet and then have her use shit and fuck and so on, because canon circumstances would imply, I'd argue, that they wouldn't necessarily think, "Oh! I would totally say damn, but I cannot for this game restrains my language. Now that I am free, I can swear like a sailor."

Then you've got other characters who're from Earth and would totally be cursing but can't because their show airs on some family friendly station at a family friendly time. Like Disney. But unlike the first example, they'd actually think, "I am in a really bad situation. Fuck."

Basically, it comes down to the characters but also the canon. Some canons? Shards and crackdust or grife would be their profanity. Even if they were transplanted into a jamjar they wouldn't jump to fuck, their minds would automatically go to crivens and cripes. Others would totally say fuck but don't just because of the rating constraints. I wouldn't overdo it with the latter but...sure, dropping the occasional fuck/damn/etc in appropriate situations (especially given how DW RP jamjars might be a little heavier on the grimdark horror torture than canon circumstances might be: even the most proper in their language might be brought to their breaking point under the right circumstances) is legit.

Thanks for the well-thought-out response! I'm probably gonna err on the side of caution and just not use it but I love reading all these responses. It's basically a "their show airs on some family friendly station at a family friendly time" situation, but if the writers could find ways to express the characters' personalities with those restrictions, then I should try to do the same.

And I know exactly what anons are talking about with family-friendly characters cursing every other line, I too have seen fuckshit-spitting Pokemon trainers

also remember that g-rated cursing can be fun as hell if you get creative. like that son of a submariner, or getting these monkey-fighting snakes off this Monday-to-Friday plane, or what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps.

Yeah, I gotta admit that's probably the safest and the best option for the most part. That said, if you end up tossing them into some sort of grimdark jamjar and they're in a high stress situation seriously don't be afraid to have them explore language if the situation calls for it. Because yeah, canonically they don't curse, but canonically they also probably haven't ended up in a Sawesque trap which entailed sawing off their arm/their best friend's arm/watching a stranger get decapitated by a machine on the way out. Especially if they ended up befriending Karkat or someone else who curses a lot because yeah, characterization marches on.

is a pokemon trainer the character you wanna play? i've seen them swear. again, don't make them throw a swear any other word. but one "well, shit" put in the correct situation hasn't hurt anyone. of course this depends on the character. i don't see erika swearing, but most protags are just your avarege teenager.

don't be such a shit slinging neanderthal and use a fucking thesaurus

Re: general question

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
it depends on the character and the world. lots of people look down on it because, like the other anon said, people use it as an excuse to add fuck every other word.

first things first: does anyone else in the canon swear? this is important, because i've seen people said "X doesn't swear because family friendly" but other characters did swear in the same show, then that excuse is bullshit. that's just ooc of the character.

now, if NOBODY in the show swears, then yes, you may consider the idea. but you have to think it through. will it be ic? how many words? soft swearing or sailor mouth? how often?

for example, a regular teenager in everyday life would totally throw hell, shit and damn often, plus the occasional fuck. but if you have the super shy moe girl? yeah, no cursing there, it's out of place.

so yeah, think it through and be careful. it can be done well. i've done it for years and never had a problem.

I think the safe route to go is to look at their dialogue in canon and keep what you write in line with that. If you've got a world where people use different curse words ("frelling," whatever) use them; those have the force of profanity for the character so there's no reason to avoid them.

In general, though, the character's canon voice is based on the character's canon lines, and if there's no profanity in the canon, then regardless of whether it's because of canon limitations or a specific characterization choice, the character... doesn't use profanity. Occasional use in high-stress situations, or developing habits based on their friends' swearing, is fine, but going from zero to frequent casual profanity just as a result of a canon change hurts your ability to make the character sound like him or herself.

so what do you do if your character swears a lot in canon but it's censored?

like barret from FF7

if it's a lighter-hearted game, having him go "oh @#*$#^" would be awesome

Re: general question

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Keep relatively light on the profanity unless the character is in a situation where most people would let loose an F-bomb. Use words like "dammit" and "crap" more often.
