Unfunny wanky stereotypes

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

it depends on the character and the world. lots of people look down on it because, like the other anon said, people use it as an excuse to add fuck every other word.

first things first: does anyone else in the canon swear? this is important, because i've seen people said "X doesn't swear because family friendly" but other characters did swear in the same show, then that excuse is bullshit. that's just ooc of the character.

now, if NOBODY in the show swears, then yes, you may consider the idea. but you have to think it through. will it be ic? how many words? soft swearing or sailor mouth? how often?

for example, a regular teenager in everyday life would totally throw hell, shit and damn often, plus the occasional fuck. but if you have the super shy moe girl? yeah, no cursing there, it's out of place.

so yeah, think it through and be careful. it can be done well. i've done it for years and never had a problem.

I think the safe route to go is to look at their dialogue in canon and keep what you write in line with that. If you've got a world where people use different curse words ("frelling," whatever) use them; those have the force of profanity for the character so there's no reason to avoid them.

In general, though, the character's canon voice is based on the character's canon lines, and if there's no profanity in the canon, then regardless of whether it's because of canon limitations or a specific characterization choice, the character... doesn't use profanity. Occasional use in high-stress situations, or developing habits based on their friends' swearing, is fine, but going from zero to frequent casual profanity just as a result of a canon change hurts your ability to make the character sound like him or herself.
