what kind of hell goes in forum roleplays? i just stumbled into one where a lot of different roleplays had the rule No nekos. Definitely no nekos allowed.

"Neko" is "cat" in Japanese - generally, that means characters that have cat ears and tails but otherwise human features. It's also called "mimi" roleplay ("mimi" = "ears" in Japanese).

I've played in forum games in the past, and while the structure is usually very different from DWRP, some games are quite good. But furry RP is very big on forums, and some non-furry games don't want to be associated with even a hint of furry failure. Other games are specifically for furries or for "lycan" (werewolf) rpers, and they don't want "neko" characters because that's at the very, very light end of the furry spectrum.

MEME ETIQUETTE QUESTIONS

I play a character that pretty much no one will ever play canonmates for. I really like playing memes, though. Does it bother you when people "assume CR" for certain memes? Not all, obviously, but for shipping memes this is sometimes necessary.


It also fits for other memes occasionally (like tfln). Is this offputting? Do you prefer only tagging with canon mates or people you've played with before in these sort of memes?

I play a pretty well-known character if that makes a difference. I just love cross canon interactions :(

I honestly prefer it when people assume CR. It makes threading on memes so much easier because then I'm not stuck trying to mentally frame the thread in some sort of context.

Modern AU has always sort of intrigued me, but I've never tried my hand at it because it seems to be so hated. Why is this? Is it because modernising an historical character is usually done really bad and shoved into Mary Sue/Gary Stu realms, or do people just find it hard to think of a character out of the historical setting? Anything else? I'm just curious, because I have a historical character that I would like to try to adapt to a modern setting just for fun. No point if there's no real interest in that sort of thing in general.

Modern AUs have always struck me as being the lazy way for people who are unfamiliar with the setting of a particular canon (Les Mis, Sherlock Holmes, etc) to play out a watered down version of the characters. I can understand the appeal, but most people are more interested in modernizing the character so they don't get side-eyed for historical inaccuracies than to play with how the character would change.

I wouldn't piss on anybody elses parade, but I'm not really a fan and don't go out of my way to tag these kinds of characters.
