Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. It doesn't look like DW can handle 5,000 comment entries at the moment so please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

Thinking about apping in here. But not a single rejection in the app pages makes me kind of nervous. Any thoughts on the writing quality of the game?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
pretty poor writing, lots of dropped threads, slow despite the game's size, a big bias on who's posts get tagged and who's don't. I'm considering leaving to be honest. you might want to look around a bit first.

I did see one rejection, but that's all. I hadn't even thought of that before. That's kind of ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
There aren't many rejections (there were a few on LJ iirc, and they may be screening rejected apps), but a lot of people have been asked for revisions. Which is better than a lot of flat rejections, in my experience. "Go away, rethink this thing, and come back" works out a lot better for quality players than people chucking things at the dart board until something sticks.

The writing quality itself is a bit of a spectrum. There are some excellent writers, a lot of decent ones, and a few mediocre writers who app well but don't seem to put a lot of thought into their tags. No one's really abysmal, and the game's big enough that avoiding anyone who isn't to your taste is fairly easy.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found that a lot of the applications get by even though they're wrong on basic information. They will accept almost anybody and give them a chance so overall the writing quality is poor, there are several characters who aren't IC according to canon but IC to how they wrote the app, and the game tends to fall into cliques quite often.

Also, you may want to look at the last few anon threads. The game has a tendency to have people swoop down to attack anons who disagree.

But don't be put off apping because of anons. If you want to app then do it. It's your choice and you may have fun.

I feel like a lot of the people in this game are character squatting!

Is my feeling wrong? I'm not sure, maybe it's just that the characters I have a personal interest in aren't that active.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people were completely inactive through December and January (for valid reasons; the move was pretty late and a lot of people couldn't work with LJ), and are being pretty slow getting back into the swing of things. Hopefully either things will pick up this month, or the next AC will shake the squatters loose.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
nope, you're not wrong. one person is character squatting an important castmate of mine. sigh.

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I feel the same with an important cast member of mine as well.

I hope AC is soon and it filters out inactivity because frankly it's ridiculous.

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of this issue seems like Abax is a fast paced game with a slow paced games AC check. Our AC is very, very easy, and when you combine that with the fact the game gets upwards of 5 new open posts a day we end up with a lot of characters that need only tag on *one day* to pass AC for the *month*, making it feel like people who are actually passing AC are squatting. I'd just write it off as a bunch of fast taggers coming in to create the feeling that so many are squatting, but it isn't only a player driven thing that has made this a fast game. Mod plots give you 1-2 days at most to plot for them, then happen over the course of a few days, and then a new plot comes around in two weeks. That is a faced pace plot schedule, faster even than ones you'll see at longer established large, fast games.

I feel a little bad for people who app in to the game thinking the AC check is an indicator of the actual speed of the game. You really can't only have 2 five comment long threads per month and come anywhere near to keeping up with Abax. This has kind of thing will eventually lead to the game getting divided in two camps just based on tagging speed. Fast taggers will stick with other fast taggers while the slow people will get left behind. The mods may eventually have to take another look at the AC system, or that divide just may become a standard part of the game.

This game is ridiculously cliquey. Unless you're part of a big cast or buddy-buddy with certain people, it's obviously clear that you're not wanted here.

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhm, while I can't say there aren't cliques, you also have to consider that there are over 200 characters in this game and it's consistently getting larger. Not everyone can tag into everything, especially intros because it's the same thing rehashed over and over, but people aren't going to not tag you if you tag them.

I myself am a culprit of not tagging around enough, however, I am making attempts to rectify this.

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's going a little far in saying that you're not wanted here, anon. The game has over 240 characters, and RP is a hobby - not an obligation. There are people in the game who have other games, who go to school, who have jobs. Are some people guilty of tagging around with only castmates/friends? Of course. But that's going to be in every game you join.

I felt exactly the same anon, it's why I dropped. I tried to get involved and drum up CR with people but threads were often dropped and my posts were pretty much ignored. unless you play certain characters or are in with certain groups people in this game just don't want you here.

I'm a brand new player and I've definitely gotten that feeling from a few of the people I've tried to tag. It's a huge bummer because I'm used to games that are a lot... warmer towards newbies, I guess?

But that said, I've also found some people who seem like they're really happy to be tagging me/other new folks, so I'd assume that it's probably a better idea to focus on tagging with the ones who return the enthusiasm and just avoid the cold fish entirely.

But yeah, to all the other people who responded to this thread feeling sort of unwanted, I'm right there with you. :( For what it's worth, I'd like to play with all of you!

Do something interesting. Do something interesting. I cannot stress this enough. Those posts, especially those intro posts, that have a dozen or so people tagging in? They have that dozen or so people tagging in because they caught those people's eye. Sometimes just by being a castmate, or a non-castmate who's a beloved character from a childhood fandom or whatever, sometimes by being a giant fucking bug thing slamming its head against the freezers. The precise what doesn't matter; what matters is they set themselves apart.

There are over 200 characters, and there would have been even more if we hadn't shed a lot in the move to DW. The game is only three months old. That means there is a hell of a lot less leeway for retreading the same tired ground that there might be in an older game, because not only has everyone read and replied to those posts before, they've probably done it five times in the last week. If you want to kickstart CR, do something different. Put the effort in to stand out from the herd, or if you prefer being tagger to taggee, sustain the effort necessary to make character connections.

The game's not cliquey so much as it is absolutely gigantic, and it is very easy to get lost if you don't put in the work to stand out from the crowd. People aren't going to handhold you into getting CR, because even the most outgoing and conscientious of us just do not have enough hands.

Yes, the game is cliquey. ALL games are cliquey. If you want cr with someone, tag them. Tag everyone. Don't sit here and whine that you don't get tags if you aren't tagging around actively.

I feel you anon. I'm kind of annoyed with people acting like they're interested in plotting with me and then dropping the PLOT THREAD after one or two comments, or never hearing anything from them after that let alone getting to the threads we're actually talking about doing

I'm staying right now because the people who have tagged me I'm having a lot of fun with. I've made an effort to tag other peoples posts rather than make some of my own, in order to maybe pull out some CR that way. I do feel like I'm drowning at the game, but I'm hoping things pick up.
