there might be something of a difference, if only in thought process. he's the same throughout canon because he's on a death run: no matter what munakata actually says, mikoto is dismissive and wryly resigned whenever the topic of his sword comes up. he knows from the start that he's going to die soon -- plans for it, in fact, because totsuka's dead and all bets are off. and that's obviously a relief to him, in some ways! it means he doesn't have to restrain himself anymore. the side:red prologue shows him thinking about the kagutsu crater, and being alternately fascinated and sickened by the thought of burning everything down. by the time the anime starts, he doesn't have a reason to hold back.

(which isn't to suggest that he held totsuka in higher esteem or anything -- personally i think he'd go to bat like that for the rest of his clan too -- but yeah, HOMRA's his linchpin and has been for a long time.)

how he'll act post-death depends somewhat on your castmate situation and if you decide to scrap his powers! but it seems safe to assume that he'd be a little more relaxed. the chase is over, after all. if you make him powerless, he might even try to integrate into regular society a bit more, as he won't have to worry about caring too much, then losing his temper and blowing up a block. tho he probably still wouldn't be very active about it, and it will likely be hilariously awkward for him, since when has he ever gone for normal human relationships.

in general: don't worry about making him talk too much, he's pretty pithy in the series. he's pretty reckless because he's never really been vulnerable in his life. don't try to play up his leadership skills either -- he's not the leader HOMRA lauds him as and he knows it; he responds dryly when kusanagi reminds him that he's their king in ep 10, saying something like, "it's the duty of a king to nap." if anything, he seems to take his role as carrying judgment (see: how he goes after the gang in chapter 5 of the manga). he doesn't care about much, but when he acts, he has a tendency to go to extremes. he's gotten better about taking things in stride over the years, but considering his scale for reactions goes from "punching totsuka in the head" to "nuke an island", most of what he does on a daily basis has probably always felt like restraining himself.
