[D] Reading an actual book

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

I am looking for four to six players to play a tabletop style campaign, to be run by me.

As a tabletop style game, it has some fundamental differences to normal DWRP. Because of this, I can’t offer too many details about the setting or what will occur. A large amount of the appeal of the game comes from being in the same situation as the characters and only knowing what they know. But I can hardly expect someone to get involved with nothing at all. So quick starting points:

The game will involve the almost universal DWRP trend of characters being taken from their canons and inserted into a multidimensional setting. The reason for it will become clear quickly and be a active plot point. The setting itself will primarily be a case of soft science ‘sufficiently advanced technology’ sci-fi, in which technology with practically magical applications exists. The intended overall goal of the game will be to escape, but as with all tabletop games the players themselves might choose to take things in a totally different direction.

Either way, the first ‘chapter’ of the game will involve a series of unavoidable trials of various types that will serve to familiarise the players with the rules of the game and the characters with each other. The game itself will be customised slightly to suit the characters chosen and the setting will change based on character actions.

This game will only accept a maximum of six players, with one character each, but a player may apply with up four characters. Only canon characters will be applicable.
Characters with very little use in combat but skills in other areas are acceptable. The upper limit for character power is also quite high, essentially anything lower than possessing cosmically, world altering levels of power. In some cases a character may have a companion (or several); this refers to a character that comes with another entity that will have its own statistics, but is largely not its own character. For example, Hogarth could be applied and have the Iron Giant as his companion. Or a Pokémon trainer could bring their team of six.
In the event of more than six applicants the players will mostly be chosen based on suitability of their character, the potential for the most interesting team dynamic and other factors such as player availability. Anyone not chosen for this game will be given a higher priority for the next game. If a whole lot of people apply, I might run two games side by side.
I will generate the statistics of the characters myself based on the application’s information and looking into the canon.

My initial thought is for the game to be run at an as available pace (like most DWRP) but have a set time of two or three hours a week in which all players will aim to be online at the same time to play together. I’m in GMT, so that may be difficult for some of you to synch up with.

The game will be run using the Marvel Super Heroes Role Playing Game (or MSHRPG) system, a now defunct game system. Since it was designed for dealing with characters of vastly different skill sets and powers it’s very good for this sort of panfandom mix-and-matching. We will be using the advanced system, but don’t worry! All that means is that it’s a more complete and well rounded system, solving some of the problems of the basic set. I don’t expect the players to learn all the ins and outs of the system before we start. A quick, basic understanding that can be gotten from reading my abridged introduction is all you’ll need as a beginner.

For the first few weeks I’ll be doing most of the heavy lifting and mostly you’ll be declaring what you want to do and shouting the numbers at me, nothing more complicated than that. Which leads me to an advantage of this system; it almost doesn’t get more complicated than that anyway. All of the rule and sourcebooks can be found here.

Applications can be made here and the decisions will be made sometime after January . Thanks for reading, any questions welcomed.

Super Robot Wars Unlimited Generation @lpha
The spiritual sequel to Super Robot Wars Unlimited Generation, now on Dreamwidth!

About the Game

ASPHODEL MEADOWS

[personal profile] made_in_wonder 2012-12-23 02:17 am (UTC)(link)

premise.

Welcome to Asphodel, the idyllic little purgatory for many a wayward soul. If your muse has wandered into this town, they're in for an odd eternity. That fairy tale background of theirs? That epic journey they had? The lovely happy ending they reached? All gone. Anyone who comes into this town thinks they've always lived there, and get local memories to match. And the replacement backgrounds they get are never too pleasant. Be it a vice they can't shake, a dream forever unsatisfied, or a lack of any lasting relationships, no one seems truly happy.

That is, unless they're one of the lucky few to discover the truth.

They might be strangers now, but spotting a formerly familiar face will still catch the eye and spark strange feelings. Precious possessions are scattered throughout the town, like little clues, unimpressive to anyone but their former owners. If they can stumble across just a few, recapture who they used to be, something might just click. No one's ever managed a full memory recovery – yet – but just a few hints might explain that constant sense of living the wrong life.

But will knowing they're stuck mean they can get out?
Or will recovery offer only darker revelations?

about.

Asphodel Meadows is an open, literate RP based on elements from Once Upon a Time, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Higurashi: When They Cry, and Greek mythology. Upon their deaths, characters are trapped as game pieces in a model village in purgatory, living new, unhappy lives as NPCs until their memories begin to return. Player plots and worldbuilding are highly encouraged, but the game's puppetmaster also actively seeks to influence events.

ic basics.
- Victimized purgatory world
- Memory loss, replacement, & recovery
- Player-driven in tone and progression
- Expanding world & plot aspects
- Regular town events included

ooc basics.
- Slow to medium paced
- Action prose used, but not required
- Adult content allowed but locked
- Backtags/Doubles/AU friendly

What does "literate RP" mean?

Are other games not "literate"?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's a term from Gaia Online that means you're expected to use complete sentences and not use, say, asterisks or shit like that to denote character actions.

DA

(Anonymous) 2012-12-26 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's code for "we value quantity over quality." Or at least that's what I found on Gaia.

Game is undergoing restructuring and will relaunch on January 4. Reserves and applications are currently open.

Out flew the web and floated wide; the mirror cracked from side to side—

LINKS

The last thing you knew, you were going about your business as usual - or perhaps you weren't; either way, it was still the life you knew. The one you were used to, that probably didn't involve waking up on hard concrete inside a rotting building with the smell of urban decay filling your world.

When you step outside, the rusting skyline of Seattle, Washington greets you. The city has clearly been abandoned for a few years; yet, as you step into the street, you can hear something moving between the crumbling buildings, skittering over the pavement on insectile limbs.

You are not alone. You are not safe.

Welcome to Montauk-1 Allende-18, a panfandom survival horror game set in the abandoned remains of late 1970s Seattle. There will be events at regular intervals, but the game is primarily plot- and exploration-driven, and the direction of the plot can and will be strongly influenced by character actions.

Something about this city, in this time, in this world, has turned it into a sinkhole in multiversal spacetime; any being that falls through a tenuous patch in their own reality is likely to end up here, and that doesn't just mean sapient, relatively humanlike entities from worlds with internally consistent physical laws. The bottom fell out of the non-Euclidean planes of reality first, flooding the city with improbable, hostile entities that have only thrived here - and whose descendants would rather eat you than each other.

The city is surrounded by an impassable barrier, keeping both the monsters and you in - though, that may be pure coincidence, as there seems to be nothing left of the world beyond it, either. And while some of the entities within the city seem like they might be human, it's hard to tell when they open fire on sight.

You are not alone. Nowhere is safe. All you can do is keep moving.

The Games-A Hunger Games based panfandom rp

[personal profile] gamemakers 2012-12-23 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
WELCOME TO PANEM

Katniss Everdeen's spark has set the world of Panem on fire, and the Capitol has been scrambling to beat down the flames ever since. President Snow is presented with two options if he's not to lose everything: Crush the rebellions with force, or pacify their anger. And when you have been murdering people's children for almost 75 years, that is no small task.

However, the Hunger Games cannot just end. The Capitol expects them, thrives off them, and although Snow is willing to pacify the Districts, he won't be seen as weak. He refuses to let them to forget what is waiting for them if they ever make one misstep, and now, it will be on their minds every day.

Behind closed doors, he has the best minds of Panem scrambling. Buried deep in one of the mountains of District 2, a technology of the old people was found. Those in the past had never been able to find the last piece of the puzzle between what they knew and what they thought they knew, but Snow's people can.

And have.

Now they can pull Tributes from all worlds, all realities, and all times. Unlimited Tributes, and not a drop of Panem's blood will be shed to fuel the rebellion's power. And the Capitol's power, its force, can be broadcast all day, every day.

Now the Hunger Games never have to stop.

Let the 75th Hunger Games begin!

And may the odds be ever in your favor.

ABOUT THE GAMES

The Games is an action packed, panfandom RP based off Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trillogy, where, instead of citizens of the 12 Districts of Panem playing in the Arena(s) as tributes, characters from other fandoms are reaped in their stead.

EXIT VOID

[personal profile] voidnpcs 2012-12-23 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Something metallic invades your senses in both taste and smell. It's almost as sharp and biting as the cold mist cutting at your skin, waking every nerve it can touch. The rusted metal beneath your cheek groans as the surface dips and rises in unending motion.

Wherever you were before is gone now, as distant as any hope of escape.
Welcome to Exit Void, a panfandom horror survival game set on a cargo ship at sea. From time to time the ship will dock and allow its passengers to visit new canon locations. The stay is never long enough, so avoid the hostiles, grab any new cargo, and make it back before the ship leaves. Ghosts await you when you return. Some wish to help, others want what you have, and others just want to watch you suffer.

After the Fallout

[personal profile] falloutnpcs 2012-12-23 07:18 am (UTC)(link)

After the Fallout
Iᴍᴀɢɪɴᴇ ᴛʜɪs.
Halloween was weeks ago, but decorations are still up everywhere. Rotting pumpkins sit on porches and driveways, starting to whither and turn brown while their insides squirm. Toilet paper hangs from trees and bushes, proof of some teenage pranks that had been played. Spooky lawn decorations, fake spider webs, blinking lights, they’re all in place, untouched. Somewhere, a motion sensor witch makes a dying, distorted cackle, batteries nearly dead.

The sky is overcast and there’s a chill in the air, just enough to make you think twice about going outside without a jacket. A breeze blows a scattering of dead leaves and trash down the street, but otherwise there’s nothing. Nothing moves, nothing makes a sound. There aren’t any cars on the roads, the birds aren’t singing. Everything is dead silent, there’s no one around but you.

There’s just one problem. If there’s no one else here but you, what are those shuffling footsteps with that staggering, uneven gait coming up behind you, that putrid smell of something rotting? What do you do?

Better think quick.
After the Fallout is a panfandom, 15+ community-based RP on Dreamwidth set in an apocalyptic near future when the world is suffering from a zombie outbreak. Characters will find themselves stranded in a zombie infested world and will need to fight for survival. If they live long enough, they might reach a promised safe haven or even see a cure found. However, many obstacles will hinder their progress and zombies are the least of the infected that they will need to worry about.

OUTER DIVIDE

[personal profile] outer_authority 2012-12-23 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
O  U  T  E  R  ♦  D  I  V  I  D  E
It's been nearly two hundred years since the domes were built to protect the people of Verdana in their Great War against their sister planet, Antiqua. Not everyone was lucky enough to be chosen to live under the protective domes. Frequent bombing raids have reduced anything outside the domed cities to rubble. Billions of lives were lost outside the domes. Over the years the bombings became less frequent. To this day, no one from the outside is allowed within the domed cities for fear of spies and heretics. The area outside the great domed cities came to be known as the [community profile] outer_divide.

Over time, the survivors in the Outer Divide slowly began to band together and rebuild something of a society. The majority of Outer Inhabitants live within what they call the Old City. It's here that an ancient space ship crashed. From that ship newcomers emerged that would change everything.

Outer Divide is a panfandom sci-fi open world game. We accept characters from all mediums as well as AUs, Fandom OCs, and Original Characters.

After new arrivals awaken in the ship they are free to explore the entire planet. The one place they'll have a difficult time entering is the the domed city. Aside from the domed city it is a post-apocalyptic world. The technologies that have survived are much like those of late twenty and early twenty-first century earth.

Much of the world has become overgrown and filled with wildlife. The majority of the animals are exactly like those found on Earth, including many extinct and thought to be mythical creatures. It's not unheard of to cross paths with a dinosaur in the wilderness.

WELCOME TO HELL. WELCOME TO LANDEL'S.

By day, Landel’s Institute seems to be an ordinary mental health facility. The doctors and staff are friendly and helpful, seemingly devoted to the care and rehabilitation of the many patients who reside within. Days are tightly scheduled with plenty of safe and mundane activities for patients - such as Arts and Crafts and frequent trips to the Music Room. Throughout the week patients are taken to their doctor consultations, where trained professionals work with them and try to help them reconnect with reality.

Of course, the reality presented by the staff is anything but. Each patient knows they’re sane, knows that they simply woke up in a strange white room one morning, captive against their will. They know everything they remember is real, and that the world and life from their memories is certainly not a delusion - as the doctors attempt to tell them.

Nighttime assures patients that all is not well in Landel's. When the lights go out, everything changes. Creatures with a taste for flesh wander the dark corridors, and even the staff turn into ghastly abominations. The very building itself becomes deadly. The bright and cheerful mental hospital turns into something worse than any mortal nightmare. Armed only with a flashlight (found under each pillow), and a small assortment of other items, patients must use their wits and skills to fight, survive, and if they’re lucky, perhaps even escape…

One Long Mission: A Naruto Dressing Room

[personal profile] skeren 2012-12-25 03:27 am (UTC)(link)

[community profile] one_long_mission is a dressing room devoted to any and all Naruto characters. We take everyone here, be it AU muses from stories with no other home, RP characters that lost their games, canon characters you want to voice test, and more. We don't discriminate and only ask that you be kind to each other. AU story lines that aren't set in the universe of the dressing room are entirely welcome as well, so don't worry if you and a friend are just looking to continue something here that has nothing to do with the dressing room world. We'll probably have some events that cause AUs like these ourselves in fact! (We have events weekly.) So just put a marker somewhere on your post and thread and we're sure everyone will be cool with it.

You can, of course, do things outside of all of this too, just mark your posts so we know and we're sure that people would be more than happy to run with whatever ideas might come up in the future. As a small warning though, we do allow violent and sexual themes for our players, so if these things are not to your taste, skim threads carefully. Now go forth and play!

For those interested in some background on the world itself, all play is based in a place called Michi no Sato in Jiten no Kuni (The village of Paths in the land of Time). The only Shinobi in this place are the ones the players bring, though the oddly calm way the villagers handle shinobi implies they've dealt with them before. They do take Naruto-verse currency, so anyone fortunate enough to bring money should be all set. Michi itself is set at the base of a cliff, and some of the houses are actually built into the cliff face itself. Anyone standing at the top of the cliff, if they have the misfortune of being weak to genjutsu, will see nothing but a never ending drop however, so watch your step. The weather is highly unpredictable, going from sunny skies to violent snowstorms with almost no warning, so keep an eye on the cues of the villagers! Good luck everyone, and enjoy your new home.

SINGULARITY

[personal profile] singularitymods 2012-12-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)

singularity (n):
1. a position or configuration of a mechanism or a machine where
the subsequent behavior cannot be predicted.
2. a point in humanity's technological development after which it
cannot be related to in our contemporary terms.
3. an instant in space-time in which all matter is condensed to
a single point, as at the moment of the Big Bang.

❝Welcome to Sacrosanct. Please watch your step.❞
It happens in the space between one breath and the next. You can feel as your insides start pulling in a different direction than your feet, and then the ground vanishes beneath you, as your body dissolves into a cloud of particles.

It only takes a moment, if moments existed right then. The rubber sheet of spacetime reaches its limit and then you're back, every atom returned to its proper place, except everything else has changed. The air rushing around you is cold as a freezer, and when you land, it's only to crash into a heap of scrap metal and spacerock.
❝There are free chemical showers to your right.❞
A chance spacetime tear has started to interact with the orbital's teleporter technology, says the station AI, and now it's dumping random material into the central zone every few minutes. No one knows how to fix it. The AI discourages you from filing a maintenance request.

Before you ask, no, there is no one here who can get you home. And no, you can't leave the star system either. You can try, but you'll always wind up back here. It's just you, the station rings, and the big planet below.

Better get comfortable.

SINGULARITY is a panfandom science fiction roleplaying game played out between a gigantic ring-world orbital station and a planet in the pre-Eden stages of terraforming. Players are offered both an enormous world space with broad freedoms as well as a fully developed interactive narrative, where players' actions can and do determine the outcome.

RUKH GATE

It happens suddenly.

One moment, you're wide awake and in the next, you aren't sure. Everything is dark until you see a warm and familiar glow. As you move towards the light, you will see it is a bird. It flies ahead, urging you to follow so you do. Soon, you are joined by another, by ten, and then thousands more. The birds fly in the same direction, guiding you along with them, and towards a greater light.

You stumble down a set of stairs and land on the ground. The sun shines down on you and the sound of running water greets you. There are footsteps and a woman's voice asks you if you are hurt. If you look up, you will see she is no ordinary woman. Adorned in a pointed hat and dignified robes, she will tell you she is a magician if you question her appearance.

Take in your surroundings. Behind you, a glowing gate is affixed to a large fountain structure. The magician will tell you it is called a dungeon and in front of you, she motion towards a grand building. Welcome to Magnoshutatt Academy, the alma mater of many a legendary magician.

Now, you have no idea how or why you're here and the average magician certainly doesn't know either. However, if you want answers and a place to stay, why not enroll in the academy? "After all," The magician continues, "You are a magician, aren't you?"

As you answer, a glowing bird flies by.

Rukh Gate is a panfandom fantasy school jamjar RP based on the manga Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. It has NPC interaction and an overarching plot surrounding the circumstances of Magnoshutatt. Characters are brought to Magnoshutatt Academy through the gate of the new dungeon Marid and given free food and lodging by the government on the condition that they enroll in the Academy and study magic. As the plot progresses, they will be able to travel to various lands, clear dungeons, and uncover the secrets of Marid, Magi and this peculiar magician's country.

SYNDEMIC

Welcome to the new world.

You have been chosen to by our team of specialists to participate in an experimental program. Beside you, you will find your cell phone and charger, a complimentary starter kit and with some handy, informative literature to get you up to speed on your new state of existence. Once you feel sufficiently informed, feel free to proceed through the laboratory doors and into the lobby.

Thank you for your participation.

According to Eden's Tree you are a fictional character; a product of someone else's imagination. Everyone you've known, all the places you have been, everything that you've done, is nothing more than another person's daydreams brought to life through art, film, literature or some other medium. That creation is offered up to you on the flat screen embedded to the wall across from a bolted down chair. Watch your movie, read your book, play your video game, peruse your comic. It will continue on loop for as long as you sit before it, soaking it in. It might even bring up fan-sites to see just how favored you are in your audience's eyes.

If this is too much for you to take in, don’t worry: there's water and crackers available on the counter and stools to sit on if you start to feel faint.

Just outside the facility's walls lies the rest of the world, the "real" world that you’ve been pulled into for whatever unknown reason, and it may not meet up to the standards you’d held it to before. A devastated landscape, empty and hollow with nothing but the wind stirring ash and dust through abandoned streets and lifeless buildings. You may at first believe yourself alone, but you’ll soon find you aren't so lucky.

It may start as a glimpse, a groan heard down some dark alleyway, or a shuffling just barely within hearing range, but you'll have very little time to ponder over it, considering once one appears, the horde is soon to follow. The shambling, walking dead, rotted and starving for the flesh of all that's left living on this barren wasteland - you. Along with the scarce pockets of survivors holed up here and there.

This is the reality you've been birthed into and you're not so fortunate to call this fictional, just another video game or horror movie to apply stereotypes and tropes to - this is a world ravaged by infection, depleted and on its last gasps of life. This is your reality, this is your wasteland, and while it's not much and it's far from ideal, it's completely free for you to make of it what you will. If, between the rampant infection, the severely limited supplies, and the ever pressing threat of the undead, you live long enough for that.

So good luck, young hopeful. Welcome to Earth.

Syndemic is a pan-fandom role playing game set in an ever-changing landscape tainted by the remnants of war and a persisting viral outbreak. The population has been reduced to a small amount of survivors and the ever-growing number of the shambling dead.

And you. You take on the role of a fictional character brought to life in this pit for reasons unknown. You will encounter crazy locals, zombie swarms, elements of survival-horror and just plain horror. Light-hearted character interaction is also welcome.

After all, you don't exist. So you might as well make the most of it.
