[D] How you like me now?

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Concerns?

Navigate:

Hey! Do not post anything outside of these threads. It will be deleted.
Go be cute and fun and fun and funny over here.

Fraction's Hawkeye is, IMO, the best thing he's done in recent memory. His Defenders series wasn't terrible, I guess, but as a fan of the older Defenders stuff, I think I'm predisposed to judge his "new spin" on it pretty hard. His Iron Fist series with Ed Brubaker is also solid, but I have no idea what percentage of that was Fraction and what was Brubaker. Avoid his X-Men unless you're in it for the train wreck, in which case, it's fab. Hilarity all the way through.

Different anon obv, but Land is notorious for being terrible about photo tracing. If you google for him, you can find various posts people have made with multiple covers featuring the exact same ridiculous, unrealistic pose or expression. His women also generally look like pornstars. Even the teenagers. He's earned a certain ire amongst most marvel fans for all the reasons listed above.

Also anon, I recommend checking again at your LCS or even a barnes and noble for DD v2. It's the prolific Kevin Smith and then Bendis/Maleev, then Brubaker runs and it's something that I find to be one of the most available things around here. If they don't have it in stock, maybe they can even order it for you because I know it's still in print. Good luck!

All good to know on the Fraction front, thanks! I think I'll continue Defenders because it's only 12 issues, so it's not a huge investment. The next Fraction thing I was going to check out after that was Casanova, which I'm told is the thing most similar to Hawkeye he's done in both quality and style. Any opinions on that one?

Ah yeah, the anon above's link demonstrated the tracing thing pretty well, and Google Image search reveals some not so flattering things on the tracing and porn/pinup fronts. o_o As said above, I wholeheartedly withdraw my first comment about his art now that I am informed.

I'll admit I'm a little hesitant to try the previous Daredevil because what I love about this current run is how fun it is, and I'm told the Daredevil stuff prior to this series is all pretty doom and gloom for Matt. I'm sure the previous series are well-written and I'll probably get to them eventually, but if they're largely dark and depressing, I'm not sure I'll get to them all that quickly because that's not what I want out of a Daredevil comic right now. I could have been informed wrong, though, so if I have been, let me know?

I have no real opinions on Casanova. I want to say I read it a really long time ago for a book club? But it didn't leave much of an impression either way. Which can be good! If I don't remember it with the same rage I feel toward Fraction's X-Men, or Defenders stuff, it was probably just not my cup of tea. But then I like my spy fiction a little more on the serious end.

Waid's Daredevil is a callback to the early 70s stuff, prior to Miller taking over the book and really defining DD as the gritty character he's been in modern comics. The runs I mentioned (Smith, Bendis, and Brubaker) each have a heavier tone to them, definitely, but it all eventually leads up to Andy Diggle's Shadowland event... Basically a 100-issue long nervous breakdown for Matt. It's definitely interesting if you decide you like the character, even though Shadowland was, generally speaking, a less than fulfilling end to that whole plotline. ... This is getting long, I'm sorry. But I do think you can appreciate Waid's Daredevil without knowing the full backstory. tl;dr, I'd recommend it even without v2, but v2 is still great if you decide you want more.
