no because unless you got a default shepard/hawke situation going on here most people don't care about other people's malleable protags. while there are fandoms, so to speak, for specific malleable protags made by specific bnfs, it's not as commonplace as canon ships for canon characters

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm just used to seeing a lot protag/character shipping in art? Like the protags from Hoyo properties, Doctor from Arknights, peoples Tavs or WoLs getting commissioned all the time, and more. As someone on the periphery of a lot of these and not actually playing from them or reading into discourse it does feel like there's quite a backing for people actually utilizing these protags as a way to not be as cringe as say "character/reader" fic while both fulfilling that urge and creating a fandom base around it. Like I remember that one blonde hoyo girl shipped with the cocky redhead had a huge following for sometime. One of the artists I follow made and retweeted a bunch of it.

da

we're the outliers, virtually every other fandom space loves protags.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Wonder why that is? Do you think it might be that protags of this nature just aren't conducive to a collaborative hobby? Most other fandom spaces (art, fic) are singular endeavors that are shared rather than improvised with another.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
no i don't think that, i think people here hate ocs

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
+1 Even if the OC in question is good, people on this site just hate OCs on principle. It’s a blind irrational dislike, one that is allegedly spurred on by a few bad experiences in the past.

Yet most of the drama on this site is caused by canon rpers fighting about their favorite ships. Does anyone remember the IchiRukia versus IchiOrihime drama? The same for Clerith and Clotif shippers.

Hell, if you want to rp Jayce from Arcane with a Mel over Viktor, expect drama.

And don’t get me started on the Hoyoshit shipping wank.

i'm glad the circle i've curated here isn't like this at all

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
da

the last 3 games i've been in have had more ocs than any other cast and all of them had tons of cr and plot as far as i could tell

so yeah going to call this [citation needed]

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
malleable protags are simply the latest type of characters DWRP has a bug up their ass about. it used to be ocs but the tide changed because stuff like critical role and tabletops as a whole got popular

and the tide will change again

can't wait to see what it'll be next

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
not really

first of all, saying that dwrp hates them in general is judging the issue based only on some loud people in anon comms. there are hundreds of game protag accounts out there. persona, baldur's gate, dragon age, mass effect, ff14; i see them all the time. i can't think of a persona cast in games that didn't have their protag. i don't think dwrp hates protags as a whole, it's a minority. i think they became a complicated conversation because they are a weird spot for mods to make rules for

second, it depends on the fandom and what you call "hate". because while there aren't as many complaints like we do here, there definitely are parts of fandom that completely ignore the protags and concentrate on the other characters. and the anon above who mentioned the solo vs collaborative thing has a point. in fic, you just filter the protag tag, so you never grow frustrated by having to deal with them. so i'd say there IS some dislike for them out there for the same reasons why we dislike them here, we just don't see rants about it

two example of actual protag dislike i've seen:

r/fireemblem argues about it all the time. half the sub wants to get rid of malleable protags and have proper characters like Ike again.

the dating sim fandom has a huge divide in this. each group even has a name but i can't remember the terms now. one group only consumes protag/character while the other prefers character/character. i remember someone sharing some fandom wank here about a game that asked for fanart but wouldn't accept chara/chara and the protag/chara fans were mad when they saw a yaoi picture. there was also an idol game that had a crossover event and neckbeards were mad that the girls would have to interact with guys from the other game.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
i think the former you’re talking about is love and deepspace while the idols thing is the love live x granblue fantasy crossover

love live isn’t a dating sim though so its not part of the dating sim fandom. its a rhythm game, but there are zero male characters that show up although they exist in the world. the fandom does share a lot of traits with the dating sim fandom because while theres no in game dating mechanisms the players create it themselves in their head. thats why there was a backlash because the crossover completely throws off the rules and story they laid over the game.

my bad about mixing the genres

i still think it's pretty telling, though. if love live were to add a manager protag, those people would probably not like it

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i get the mix up because i was under the impression that love live was a dating game just from what i picked up online. then i went and actually looked at the game.

honestly i don’t get the appeal of games like this and the horsegirl gacha.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
rhythm games are just something fun to do with your fingers, it isn't any deeper than any other game

as someone who is enjoying the horsegirl gatcha, i love the gameplay loop (training to win races). when i was in my teens and early 20s i used to be very into real horseracing and became turned off by the brutality of the sport so it's nice having pictures of happy girls with tails instead of real tortured animals. i generally do one "career run" during my breaks from work throughout the day.

it's funny because i'm not into women and especially not into anime trope girlies but i have become quite invested in my two faves (rudolf and air) and in general i like how much content there is of the girls interacting with each other, genuinely considering watching the anime.

i hate gacha with passion, but the reason is because i hate the gambling, manipulation, power creep, and monetization. that applies to most mobile games and i hate them all equally. that said, the gameplay itself in gacha games is perfecly fine, so i understand the appeal. i would totally play no-gacha versions of many of the popular gacha games like genshin

inb4 genshin people comes to scream that their game doesn't count as gacha for (checks notes) reasons. keep fucking that chicken, guys

Former genshin player here, struggling to understand how one could argue it's not gacha.

Re: Love Live and Granblue Fantasy collab.

As someone who used to play Love Live: School Idol Festival and who has seen the story from the collab posted online, neckbeards got pissed over nothing, lmao. The girls barely interacted with the male characters, if at all, while they get plenty of shipteasing with the blue-haired girl from GBF.

Fun fact: LLSIF also had a Code Geass collab, featuring the Aqours girls and Lelouch, C.C., and Nunnally. In story, Lelouch got turned into a plush and none of the Aqours girls got to hear him. Meanwhile, all of the girls interacted with each other instead, lol. My guess is the staff knew the neckbeards would act like babies, so the above scenario was a countermeasure.

being quite honest, anyone in FE fandom who considers Ike the last “proper” video game character are the same ones who think the game wasn’t always anime

since, regardless of what you thought of engage, Alear wasn’t malleable. they had a clear defined character and, early on in the story, actually were pretty cowardly despite expectation on them to act heroic given their role as the divine dragon.

it’s a criticism made by people who haven’t touched or played very far into any of the FE games they are criticizing.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
i didn't say that ike was the last one, he was just the best example since not many people know the protags from the older games

and yeah, alear, corrin, and robin weren't that much malleable, they're part of the discussion, don't worry. most people in the sub played the new games, it's the old ones that have seen less play. in fact the most obnoxious people in the sub are the folks that have only played 3H and expect every game to be like that, when 3H was actually an outlier. (for the record, i'm not trying to gatekeep, it's fine if you play only 3H and nothing else, just don't be an ass about it)

the thing about the protags since robin is that they still have lots of horrible self-insert tropes attached to them. they gave alear a reason in universe for everyone to kiss their ass, but it's still incredibly annoying. and i say this as someone who loved engage, which is a very divisive game.

of the new protags, shez from 3 hopes is actually a big favorite in the sub precisely because they avoid many of those tropes

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Tavs and WoLs are not the same as all those others because their looks and backstories are 100% player input

I'm one of those old biddies who thinks yumeshipping/selfshipping has largely ruined fandom (can they please tag their reader x character so search in places like Tumblr is usable again?) and I RP with malleable protags here anyways because unlike the yume/selfshippers most malleable protag RPers we get here are actually quite reasonable

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
i feel with yumejoshi there’s two categories of them: the self shippers and the ones who still check off everything but self-inserting. the latter are less interested in “i want this to happen to me” and more like “i want this to happen between two hot people and watch.”

da

(Anonymous) 2025-11-05 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The latter category are chill, from my experience. I like them.

Self-inserts, however, are trash and I wish an add-on exists to hide #yumetwt shit from my feed.
