Rundown:
rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.
Rules:
Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)1. if you play a canon character, do you want ocs to tag out to you, or are you kind of hoping they won't?
2. do you play a character with castmates/a popular or well known character, or are you a LCW? do you play predominantly m/f, m/m, or some other combination, and does it influence how you feel about being tagged out to by ocs when you're playing that specific character?
3. do you prefer that someone who plays an oc ask you first, or just go for it?
4. does it vary by genre? are there genres of ocs that just aren't appealing to you?
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)2. usually lcw. m/m is my favorite but ota. i don't think about ocs that deeply
3. they don't need to ask
4. i don't really like high fantasy so i'd avoid d&d, but would still tag them if they tagged me
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)2. it depends on who's around. sometimes there's lots of cast, sometimes not. again, i don't mind the oc as long as it suits the character i'm playing. i play predominantly m/f with my canon character, but i'm ota with my ocs.
3. either works. i know some people have anxiety about it and want to check in, and i won't turn someone away for doing that, nor jumping in. my preference is for the story of the oc, and that's what i base my yay or nay on.
4. yes.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)2. LCW, m/f for shipping, and if it's a gen thread, then either.
3. OCs can either ask about an idea they have in mind or go for it. Though if it's a shippy thread/meme I'd prefer they ask first.
4. Vampires. I'm bored to death (no pun intended) of them, so while I personally wouldn't seek out a vampire OC I won't reject them if they tag me.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)2. Castmates, m/any. Doesn't influence me so long as the oc is interesting and, again, has a summary about them that's easy to find.
3. Please just go for it, I lose interest at "want a/would you play with". Offer a scenario instead.
4. Not necessarily? I don't think I've ever seen a cracky comedy oc, which is where I might find some genre issues.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)2. my current main is popular but i usually play lcws. no ship prefs, and neither factor influences my responses to ocs.
3. just go for it!
4. personally i don't love slice of life, but i'd play with a generic real-world oc if one tagged me.
more than genre it's about the vibe to me. there are some ocs i get the sense exist only for shipping (most of them, tbf - no shade, play what you want) and i'm a start-gen build-up-to-ship girlie. this is in my prefs, so i don't tag out to ship-prioritizing ocs, and if i got tagged by one i'd just hope they read my info.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)2. I usually play LCWs, but I'm playing someone more popular at the moment. I don't do a lot of shipping in general and so I don't have any particular preferences re: OCs.
3. Just go for it!
4. The OCs that are clearly only for sex/shipping. If how much sex they have/would like to have is part of the basic description of the character I'm not interested.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)2. i usually play characters from relatively popular canons. maybe not always the big new fad, but usually something people have heard of. i play m/m, m/f and f/f. i usually play from live action, western video games, or western animation, occasionally books.
3. just go for it!
4. not too interested in anything based on history or mythology. i've never played with an interesting one

(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)2. This doesn't matter to me, I'm fine with oc tags regardless
3. Go for it
4. Genre doesn't matter to me either.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)2. i've played canon characters on both ends of the canon popularity spectrum. my current fandom scales on the more popular end. all my characters are pan by default unless canon explicitly emphasizes otherwise, i'll ship with any config. an approaching character being an oc doesn't rly factor into any of this for me
3. not really, fine if they just go for it
4. not particularly? some genres might just clash more against the genres my characters promote than others, but that's just super dependent all around. i'll give most combos a shot either way
also, blanket note over all of these answers: for me, ocs and characters i'm canonblind to basically occupy the same niche in my mind. so in both cases, the biggest sticking point is information being readily available in the journal. knowing what your char's deal is and/or what your prefs are is half the battle for me
and ocs have no wiki i can google up if needs must, so info availability is double a make or break for them. pls have at least a two-sentence elevator pitch somewhere
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)2. I'm usually LCW, but recently picked up a few muses from a relatively popular anime. I'm open to m/f and m/m, though I may want to start gen with an OC in a way I might not with a canonmate. Still, approach me with an idea and I'm down to clown.
Also, please bring your OCs to my OCs, I have a bunch of my own.
3. I don't want to be asked first, but if you have an idea to run with, I'd love to hear it up front.
4. I am not interested in OCs clearly made for smut, whose personalities are tits and ass.
I'm also sort of wary when I see someone playing multiple OCs in the same verse who are deeply intertwined with another's stories to where I don't know where my character is supposed to work themselves into the existing dynamic. Like, if you're writing a novel and you have your main characters up on memes who are clearly codependent or otherwise really clearly defined by how they relate to one another, I don't feel drawn to engage with that.
For me, part of the fun of OCs is the way they're not inherently tied to a plot and can shift to play against other characters more freely and open-endedly.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)2. popular canon but muses from it come and go. no ship prefs so it doesn't influence me any.
3. just go for it.
4. as long as the oc isn't made just for smut, genre doesn't matter to me.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)2. i tend to play popular well known characters and prefer m/m when it comes to shipping or smut, but i've done m/f when the chemistry is there. don't really think about ocs on this.
3. if it's bakerstreet i make it clear what i want so they don't tag me, in games free for all go for it
4. nope, no genre matters
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)2. in game: not very popular character A from a fairly well known and recent canon (not mcu or hoyo levels, i'd say halfway between that and total obscurity), no castmates. in memes: unpopular character B from an unpopular canon, seen maybe 4-5 castmate journals ever. in game i play mostly gen, in memes mostly m/m. i don't think it influences how i feel about ocs
3. just go for it
4. yeah, for sure. both the canons i rp from have sci-fi / fantasy elements, so i don't super care for ocs from mundane modern settings; urban fantasy / magical realism / etc. is completely fine, i just don't super vibe with ocs from worlds where nothing supernatural is going on, because i feel like that gap between worlds is too big. i would probably feel differently if i was playing a character who came from a mundane modern (or historical) setting, though
i also have a slight preference for fandom ocs from canons i'm already familiar with, because it's less work to figure out their worldbuilding etc. and i can focus more on who they are as a person and less on how their world works. this is not a big deal, though

(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)2. i play a wide variety of different characters and am open to ocs tagging all of them
3. just go for it
4. as with all things, it comes down to writing chemistry. i don't care about anything except that
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)2. lcw, ota, again with the caveat i dislike characters being solely played for sex
3. just go for it
4. i don't care for powergamering know-it-alls like some wol ocs but they never tag me anyway
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)2. it varies. i usually get into canons late but play characters people would recognize on sight if they know anything about the canon even just vaguely? i am open to every gender configuration for shipping unless my header says something like m/m or f/f only which i do for canon gay characters.
3. i don't care either way but usually when people ask if they can tag i say yes and then they vanish so don't do that?
4. i guess i might not want to be tagged by a porn oc in a gen meme?
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)2. i dont usually play new hotness canons so i like canonmates but am usually an lcw anyway. i dont play for ships but when ships have happened theyve mostly been mf
3. this is a silly thing to expect imo. if you are in a game with somebody they may tag you. if you post to a meme randos may tag you. if you dont want to tag back then dont.
4. no.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)2. i play well known characters with castmates and a LCW. all of the characters are OTA with two leaning toward f characters and one having no preference. these prefs don't influence how i feel about oc tags since i primarily play in games and i'm not playing to ship anyway
3. just go for it unless i've specified otherwise in my prefs.
4. i don't like smut-focused ocs at all and i don't like powergamers/infomodders, which ime in bakerstreet both of these are a problem that's happened enough for me to be touchy about ocs in memes. malleable protags are hit or miss but i'll give most a chance
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)2. i play one lcw and one popular character right now and am equally open to ocs with both. no preference for gender with ships, i like them all.
3. they can just go for it, but i don't mind being asked, either.
4. any genre's fine! the only ocs i insta-pass on are the smut-centric ones with scarcely a personality or ones using ai art.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-27 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)2. I play from relatively well known canons but every game I've had characters in they've lcwed. I typically play m/f or f/f (play mostly female characters). This doesn't really affect my feelings wrt OCs as I feel that most ship-pushing OCs are female OCs looking for m/f.
3. I don't mind for gen but if they are intent on shipping I’d appreciate a heads up.
4. If OCs have multiple info pages or are CRAU (especially from multiple games) I'm not interested - I want to be able to go to the journal and get an elevator pitch on the character. Also not really interested in powergamers or fandom OCs who are relatives of (or specifically listed as better than) canon characters.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)2. well known character, sometimes with castmates sometimes lcw. i don't app in with people so it varies
3. unless your oc is a walking ball of triggers i don't know why someone would ask me first?
4. super not interested in sex-oriented ocs or ffxiv ocs.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-28 03:03 am (UTC)(link)2. older or obscure canons, almost always solo. gen or slowburn UST and doesn't matter.
3. just go for it. it's nice if you have an infopost that I can skim. for my own ocs, I try to have an elevator pitch somewhere in their profile, like ~1-3 sentences that say [name] is a [title/profession] from [setting] who [interesting character hook].
(imo canon characters should do this as well. even from popular canons. i think it's way more useful than a canon wiki page that's 5000 words long and never gets to the point of what's actually interesting about the blorbo, lmao)
4. not really? the previous commentors mention shipping-focused ocs, but i think that applies regardless of canon? everyone should be direct about your shipping preferences in your info and acknowledging other people's prefs.
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-28 05:02 am (UTC)(link)2. lcw all the way. i'm usually relatively uninterested in castmate cr, i'm out here for crosscanon shenanigans. (and thus, in games i usually play canon characters who are VERY unlikely to get close castmates, so i'm not screwing over anyone who likes castmate stuff.) i play predominantly m/m, but am not opposed to shipping in any other configurations.
3. just go for it, unless there's something about the thread that needs hashing out first (kinks to discuss, are we starting off in media res, are we au-ing into a specific world) but that also goes for canon characters.
4. i usually prefer playing against characters who originate from fantasy or sci-fi oriented worlds, and have a similar bias for ocs. i don't prefer playing against 'everyguy' kind of characters. i also don't like to play off canon ocs who have established relationships with canon characters (for example, an ff7 oc who is sephiroth's long-lost sister, an oc who is dating trunks dragonball z etc.)
Re: opinion poll
(Anonymous) 2025-05-28 07:10 am (UTC)(link)2. i play across the board, from obscure lcw to heavy-cast mainstream fandom rep; no impact on my interaction with OCs
3. just go for it
4. there are some genres that will struggle to click, depending on the character, unless one of us compromises - but that's true of fandom characters too.
