rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

would definitely be a good time to poke the other player and see where their prefs lie. doesn't have to be a big thing, even just a little pm to the journal is fine. "hey so i've been thinking about this tag and i actually think it could go either a or b. can't decide which! any thoughts on what sounds more fun for us?" etc etc

if you really don't mind either option yourself, it's gonna be a win/win to find out what jives with your partner. no need to play guessing games if you really don't need to.

Op but I get a 'whatever you want!' answer when I ask. More convo proves they are ok with either so I'm still at a loss. But I definitely did try talking about it.

well if you did ask and they really are fine either way then at least they shouldn't be fussed about what they get, and you're now absolved of all responsibility if they do ghost on your pick anyway

this is why i personally have no patience with "idk let's do whatever!!" people in rp these days, and lower my expectations threading w/them to zero. either they genuinely dont know what they want and will make you carry the thread's entire progression, or they do know what they want but refuse to actually say it and get huffy or abandon the thread when you fail to read their mind

hopefully things turn out better for you in this case but yeah it's now out of your hands. if it's a meme, def either swing for the icly-wobbly but fun and quickly-gratifying option. otherwise, either choose the one you personally vibe more with, or idk do a cointoss. then proceed and hope for the best

personally i also try and minimise how much i rp with these people because eventually you discover you're doing 90% of the work for 10% of the reward.

when i say "idk let's do whatever" it's because what i want is for the other person to just tag the thread so we can play. i want it to play out organically instead of deciding how everything is going to go ahead of time. if i absolutely can't work with the tag you give me or it's a one-way ticket to seriously negative cr-ville then i'll let you know, but otherwise? just fucking tag and let's rp.

exactly. just tag me with whatever your character would do and i'll roll with it unless it's something that would get a major negative reaction from my character, and like i said, i'll tell you if that's going to be the case so you can change it if you don't want the thread to turn sour ic. but tbh i'm even willing to roll with that because negative cr can be fun too.

i despise the deluge of plotting posts and rampant talking-more-than-rping, but you don't need a beat-by-beat debrief of the upcoming thread to just say 'elevator explosion' or 'coffee date' or 'something horror-based.' 'idk let's do whatever' is a little above just sitting there with a pulse.

please anon you're just setting out bait for more of these guys to come and defend themselves

let's just let the "let's do whatever!" crowd find and play with each other when we quietly let them go

i mean if you're in the middle of a thread then i presume you've already decided on that much

I hate planning. Most times the thread won't go as planned anyway so I'd rather just tag away and build up the direction in the thread as I go. The only times I plan is when it's to get a general idea of a smut thread or who wins or loses in a fight.

idk i just think you're missing out on the fun of cooking with your rp partner. you never know what OTHER threads you might come up with by communicating. excitedly discussing your threads and freewheel plotting doesn't mean no writing will get done, it just means you have even more ideas. it can honestly lead to more rp rather than less. this does depend on your synergy with your rp partner ofc, like...you probably have to get along outside of "idk let's do whatever" type communication

you can make rough sketch plans without planning things out note by note

(i also think planning threads out in advance gets a bad rap because it's associated with flakes who substitute planning for playing but anecdotally i have encountered just as many flakes among the spontaneous pantsers as the talkers.)

personally i've had more trouble people who said 'we'll do whatever' or suggested they'd tag in without plotting than i have the other way around. I've never rigidly planned a thread beat-by-beat, but every time someone has given me a goal for the thread, we've gotten to it. which is not to say i've never had successful spontaneous threads either, just that i don't necessarily think one method over another ensures whether or not a person is a flake
