Cute and hydrated

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

I really want to try getting into a new game, but whenever I find one that seems interesting, I keep being intimidated by the sheer length of the TDM prompts...

i usually gather a mental summary from taking the time to read over all the prompts at least once from top to bottom, assuming there isn't any i immediately nope and skip over in my head while scrolling. i then hatch about 3ish scenarios for my character based on the ones that stuck out as the most relevant or most interesting to try out to me personally, either in general or bc of who i'm writing and or my expectations for my character in the setting. i also prefer to offer meta variety afa the interaction opportunity for any and all potential cr by having those ideas favor variety in terms of writing options than worldly interactions (i mean, c'mon, they just got there; they can always explore more once they're actually settled in), both to demonstrate my understanding of the character as well as to hopefully acquire some decent interactions to explore further once i'm in the game. helps to have a wide net where there's maybe a little something for everyone else browsing and looking for the same, even if they're not completely canon familiar or anything.

as in, regardless of the ic context and details, one usually has my character more present and casual, where they're in their comfort zone and nothing to complain about. the other has them kind of out of sorts in need of a hand, and another might have a "oh boy, where can we go with this" opportunity. i also tend to throw a bonus prompt that's more general if not network related, assuming it's an option or makes sense for my character, sometimes including the first idea for their post-arrival afa showcasing what to expect from them within the setting. lastly i may put a "or byo if not choose from the list etc, let's have fun!" fifth and final option for the heck of it bc why not? if the shoe fits, let's share it.

or tl;dr regardless of precise prompt details, standard format tdm tl i usually prefer to work with for a quick ref (also bc ik this comment might similarly read intimidating at a glance due to length oops):

1. casual setting where my character has more control, possibly arrival related or they're more comfortable with the setting than when they first got there, and can be more their usual self while still catering the prompt and things (this can even be a serious prompt or one that's more "in case you just want a chill thread" kind of deal... not to say the same can't happen with some of the others ofc, but it's an idea! but it at least does its part demonstrating you know what you're working with ooc and how others can anticipate your character working with the same icly in advance of future gameplay, so to speak)
2. my character lacks whatever their usual level of control in most situations, and they need help with something! oh no! and it can be YOUR character who helps them... unless?
3. what if we went to the pumpkin carving festival and your hand touched mine bc this jack o lantern suddenly came to life and started asking us to play truth or dare (gone wild, gone sexual, gone wtf is this pumpkins talk here)? would that be crazy or what? and other wacky invitations to hijinks that the tdm offers that create a mutually controlled or uncontrolled environment where the characters have even (or evenly uneven) footing
4. network and or immediate "what would my character do here" the moment they get past the arrival segments, assuming that also isn't curiosity for the in game comms
5. byo prompt for tag ins, either from the tdm list or their own

you can def always shorten the list. 2-3 distinct prompts and a byo are plenty fine as is anyway, but hopefully that might help gauge the options available to you a bit better. depends per character and what you want to write, or whatever really speaks to you of the tdm's prompt list, but i imagine this framework's flexibile enough for the ones that catch your fancy. sponsored by i'm waiting on several tags atm after topping up on all my current threads so why not help someone else get some traction if i can.

best of luck in advance btw, nonny! you got this!

i've noticed tdms are starting to have summaries at the bottom, which is great. i'm the kind of rper who doesn't need a lot of specifics, just a general scene and i can go wild

it'd say look for that in the tdms, it's usually at the very bottom

so don't read the prompts and just tag out. if you start to doubt yourself, then you can go back and read only that prompt you're tagging on.

the truth of the matter is you have to do some reading before you commit to any game. premise, faq, rules, locations... it's a reading hobby.

I find it easiest to digest one prompt at a time. Read the overview, read one prompt, write a top level prompt for it if you like it, go do something else. Repeat after you've taken a break.
