Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

you mean the anonymous plurk full of the shittiest takes known to man

begging any and all irl mods to ignore that plurk we will never have a functional game again if mods start listening to it

As a former mod: stick to your original plan and be anon. There are some people who really absolutely won't join an anon modded game. There are some people who dislike anon mods and will try to put you off of it but would join anyway. And then there are the vast majority of people, who will join games with premises they like and casts/friends they want to play with.

The value of having both OOC separation from mod duties (as in, no one approaching me with modwork in my personal spaces) and being able to play my character and have fun in my own game without people nitpicking what I was doing was immense and I don't think I could ever non-anon mod again.

As for other tips:

1. Get at least one but preferably two co-mods who are full mods and not just list/app helpers. Trust me on this one. Please don't wait until you start burning out to find co-mods. If you're thinking "I won't burn out", yes you will. Unless you're running a small low-maintenance game, modding solo is very tough. Get people who can keep the game running and not let work pile up if you're sick or busy for a while.

2. Finish your info pages before advertising. If a couple extra things are TBD that's fine, but the bulk of the game (and certainly the main plot/premise details) should be finished.

3. Pretty coding attracts attention. Default layouts and unformatted info pages turn people off. Yes, we should be judging on writing and not aesthetics, but a lot of people don't.

4. Set a date for your TDM that is 2-4 weeks after your first advertisement and stick to it. This builds excitement and lets people consider characters and set aside time to tag. I've seen a few games where the mods get excited by the initial response to the ad and don't want to lose momentum so they rush the TDM out within a few days. It never works out.

5. Stick to your guns on things like AC and character types allowed in your game. There will always be people coming into game plurks and acting like their preferences are objectively correct and your game is doomed if you don't change what they're complaining about. It's your game, not theirs. Make the game you want to run.

+1

I've never been to Waffle House but I've heard the stories. Would love to try a meme like this.

any advice for someone playing from a rare fandom??

i really love the structure of meme communities like bakerstreet, but struggle to maintain interest in crosscanon threads because i’m so hyperfocused on my specific fandom. i have some PSLs going on with a close friend so i’m not exactly starving for content, but memes with canonmates are very snackable to me, for lack of a better term. they’re like chips!!!

i’ve posted my characters to bakerstreet before, told myself i was gonna engage with crosscanon should it come, only to immediately lose interest once i’m met with it. but i always come back thinking this time will be different, or that i should post my characters so people know there’s someone interested in that fandom bopping around.

what should i do?? simply wait for EMP and post my characters there? specify i only want canonmates despite the lack of them? lurk endlessly, hoping someone will toplevel with a character i recognize? or simply accept i need to get more onboard with crosscanon or dreamwidth isn’t for me?

Not that I know of. I wish!

(Anonymous) 2025-05-29 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
posting something will always get more results than posting nothing and hoping other people somehow psychically pick up on what you want. post to emp and keep posting on memes saying you want canonmates. i've seen whole rare fandom casts appear on memes when they see someone posting regularly and decide to pick up old accounts or rare characters.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-29 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
it's perfectly fine to say you prefer canonmates

you probably do need to get more onboard with crosscanon if you want to get the most out of dwrp, but just give it time. it took me a few years to develop the interest, but you'll kill your motivation by forcing it imo

that thing was like setting out bait for all of the most annoying people who show up in interest checks to complain and then never join anyway. you know the ones. lol

I can get why anons who don't like those elements would be disappointed but otoh I think involving fae as a premise makes it not really a surprising development for the game. turning people into things is a staple of fairie stories, and slight aesthetic modifications is probably more playable than a swan or something

Decide what potential pvp looks like and how it will be moderated very early on. Some people can do it but competition can and will bring out the worst in some people.

Keep the group small to start to give yourself time to get used to modding. Run an interest check and keep in mind that plenty of people can be encouraging but not actually app. If you want to make it private, consider whether you have enough reach to pull in a sustainable population.

Have a pitch that's a bit more direct than what you posted here, because "themes of" doesn't tell people as much about what the game is meant to be as something like "this is a zombie horror survival game set in the ruins of city x, where characters wake up from a coma with no idea how they got there and have to band together to survive" would. Also, figure out what will distinguish your game visually and play-wise from other horror and horror adjacent games, and make sure you lean into that.

if being an anon mod prevents the people in that plurk from joining, then that's a point in favor of being anon

I already had that in mind, I also just like looking at other people's process while I fiddle around because then I can learn something I would never have thought of just trying stuff out on my own. kinda like reading a recipe as a guideline then fucking around in the kitchen, if that makes sense. thank you though! that's a good thing to remember. :)

I have a lot of thoughts on how the slow roll out the pixie led mods seem to be doing for everything might come back to bite them but I meant it more as a "sorry anti-transformation anons, I can see both why it would be included and why that would turn you off the game"

(Anonymous) 2025-05-29 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Try and try again when it comes to post on bakerstreet and continue to keep an eye out for your canon. Do not force yourself to tag the cross canon but you do need to accept that your preference is going to limit your chances of rp.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-29 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably need to figure out what it is that makes you lose interest. I might actually suggest trying to tag out, if you want to get crosscanon that interests you? That way you can control whether it's a canon you know and like, and spend some time matching the vibes to whatever interests you about your canon in your starter. But if what you like is just the dynamics between the specific characters and their established relationships, then no amount of vibes matching will get you there.

+1 to think through what does and doesn't appeal.

I tend to favor castmates in memes and I realized it's because the threads are usually deeper and more unique to the characters/show off their voices. I'm not against cross-canon, but too many of the cross-canon threads I've had end up feeling really generic and very SOL, which I'm not into. I can be into memes where people get into morals or vulnerabilities really quickly (and not just of the 'I'm unlovable tell me how hot I am' type of vulnerable) or where I can AU into someone else's canon and we can use that as a shared jumping off point to explore what's unique about that character combination. I've pulled back from meme play now that my canon is less popular, though, because I a.) don't know a lot of other canons and b.) have had people clearly not vibe with the AUing and just want to do a generic jamjar thread and not involve setting or history at all.

It can also be helpful to think out what kind of cross-canon might appeal and what might not. I don't have much interest in modern and realistic characters/fandoms, for example, whereas I can vibe with SFF, historical canons, etc.

I also find I vibe with cross-canon way more in a game where relationships can develop organically and both characters have some impetus/reason for interacting. Some kind of common ground.

So myself and my bestie decided to create an original world and oh my god, I am living for it so much. Like their OCs and my OCs are just clicking and our brains are on fire for this little garden we've planted together, I am SUPER EXCITED

Re: Advice?

the problem with gsai's game wasn't that it was anon precisely it was the mod specifically hid his identity because he knew no one would join if he was public. he was basically manipulating the good parts of anon mods. that doesn't mean all of them are sus.

honestly it's damned if you're do, damned if you don't, because if you don't, people will drag mods and accuse them of all kinds of things, and if you do, people speculate about the mods and drag random people and guess things they're doing instead.

being a mod really sucks

exactly, hasn't dupe been anon its entire run at this point? and it's been going forever.

After a mild dry spell, today I've gotten all sorts of juicy meme starters and I feel full of life.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-29 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
you should probably also do other things, but definitely put an ad on emp/next month's rpa post in the "pairings you want to play" thread. i did that, figuring nobody would bite for this rare canon but i might as well, and i got a response that turned into a few memes together and then a delicious psl that's still going strong. you never know who out there might be into this canon but not actively tagging around with a muse from it; it's definitely worth putting up an ad

i've got a few tips for animanga. i've posted some of these before, sorry if they're a repeat:

- my smart sharpen settings in photoshop are: amount 44%, radius 0.3px, reduce noise 0%, remove lens blur. works well for black and white manga, can be a tiny bit too sharp for coloured manga or anime, so dial down the amount as needed

- the higher quality your original image, the better. for manga i usually go for rips of official english releases, just out of convenience, but scanlators will sometimes have better quality scans than the digital releases. if you don't like the quality of the originals you've got to work with, it's worth looking around to see if a different source has them in higher quality

- for b&w manga, before you resize, it's worth zooming in like 300%, getting a small size white brush, and going over the greyish compression artifacts near the lines. makes the image look cleaner and crisper once resized, in my experience

- redrawing lines is way easier than it looks. obviously it'll be harder the more substantial the redraw, but if you've just got a sfx obscuring your character's hair or something, that is not a very difficult fix and shouldn't scare you off from using that particular panel or shot. my biggest tip is to redraw before you resize; you have more flexibility that way. also, your lines don't need to look perfect, they just need to look plausible -- if you're doing a small redraw, like the example w/ the sfx covering up part of the hair, chances are this will end up being a pretty small portion of the overall icon so nobody is going to scrutinise it going like "hmm has this been redrawn". a confident line that matches the original's thickness is good enough. you don't need a tablet either, you can do perfectly fine redraws with a mouse (it's what i do). confident lines are key imo, and practice makes perfect, so start small and don't get discouraged!

- semi-relatedly, it's also completely fine to leave a dialogue bubble in an icon. personally i just erase the contents and then leave the bubble alone if it would require a significant redraw
