Cute and hydrated

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

i mean if you're in the middle of a thread then i presume you've already decided on that much

what's your favorite non-regular (tfln, sexting, gen/midnight texting, random, etc.) meme?

bonus, why you like it and/or some memorable threads you wanna talk about that you've had on it!

Hi, anons! How do you decide where to end a tag? What are your preferences for how much "stuff" to put into it (and to get in return)? Some people I thread with write pretty meaty tags with a lot of action and dialogue that I hit up point-by-point when I reply, while others focus on just a single action or piece of dialogue, which I then respond to and build out from at more or less the same pace they set. I prefer the second style as long as the tags aren't, like, fifty words long and include some meaningful introspection, but I really like the first one, too, within reason. Just curious to hear about other peoples' experiences! Thanks for sharing in advance. :)

i'm definitely the first type of tagger, sometimes even to the point where i feel like i put too much stuff in my tags, but i'm working on it, because i feel like if i put too much dialogue/action in my tag, i'm kind of locking my rp partner into replying a certain way; like, if i put 5 sentences of dialogue in my tag, then some action, then more dialogue, then that is assuming the other character won't interrupt, or nothing will happen that would prevent the second batch of dialogue from happening, or whatever. obviously if the other person really wants to have their character interrupt, they can do that anyway, but i don't want to make that feel weird or anything, so i try to not go on for too long without leaving a clear place for their character to do something if they want to.

another thing: sometimes when you write a ton of dialogue, you end up with like two or more threads of conversation happening in parallel almost, where answering dialogue point by point kinda breaks it up in a way that isn't super realistic, and this bothers me a little when i end up doing it, so i try to make it so that i wouldn't force my rp partner to address three or more points in one tag. two seems fine, but 3+ feels like a bit much.

also sometimes when i'm writing a tag i get to a place where i could write more but i'm already kind of tired of writing this specific tag, or i run out of writing juice or whatever, so if it feels meaty enough i just end it there.

am i the asshole, two truths and a lie, support group

introspective. says a lot about the particular character(s)

this is why I never reach out to anyone for anything. let them come to you, but as above anon said, time to step outside and focus on anything but rp. people are fickle and weird in this hobby, best not to let it get you down.

The don't panic meme. You know what sort of thread someone is angling for even if you're completely canonblind. You can get a feel for action, horror, h/c from their starter and work with that.

I play it by thread, personally! The improv rules of "yes-and" or "no-but" are my benchmark: Is something happening in the tag, whether action or dialogue (or, if neither, some notable body language or scenery development), that the other character can respond to? That's the most important part, whether the tag is one line or multiple paragraphs.

Personally, I love introspection, and tend to add more than less just because it's fun to write. I can't always keep up threads that are just one or two bits of dialogue without a single bracket or action - no shade on those writers, just not my speed. Sometimes I do go overboard and we end up in a parallel-conversation limbo like the anon above mentioned, but I try to pare it down with a nonverbal response to the first part, then expand on the second part only.

In general, my RP life got easier when I realized most people don't care about matching length, as long as there's a good hook.

you can make rough sketch plans without planning things out note by note

(i also think planning threads out in advance gets a bad rap because it's associated with flakes who substitute planning for playing but anecdotally i have encountered just as many flakes among the spontaneous pantsers as the talkers.)

i visualize it like a game of catch kinda

you catch the ball they throw- you react to their hooks- and then you throw it back by adding a hook of your own.

once you've done both of those things you've got a finished tag. sometimes its gonna be a long introspective ramble and sometimes its gonna be

[action] sentence

this is late af so nvm if you already got one but what about cherry_punch?

downton abbey

(Anonymous) 2025-05-20 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
is this fandom largely dead in dwrp or are people holed up somewhere?

is there a current downton kink meme?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-20 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
tell me something i don't know meme

but DON'T use it to post your character's most intimate secret that they would only tell a very close friend. i mean you can, if you want, that limits the meme's tagging in potential imo.

a time traveler from the distant past 👀

(Anonymous) 2025-05-20 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
there were a couple in the past few months that were along the lines of like, "what would this character do for money" or "hire this character to do a job for you" and i like those a lot, i think they're fun

god keeps me humble by periodically hitting me with the urge to get back into a completely dead historical canon and then spend no fewer than three months fiending for at least one ship from that canon. keeps me on my toes

(Anonymous) 2025-05-20 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I liked the Help Wanted, where you put out a job you're hiring for and characters "apply" by tagging in.

personally i've had more trouble people who said 'we'll do whatever' or suggested they'd tag in without plotting than i have the other way around. I've never rigidly planned a thread beat-by-beat, but every time someone has given me a goal for the thread, we've gotten to it. which is not to say i've never had successful spontaneous threads either, just that i don't necessarily think one method over another ensures whether or not a person is a flake

+1

(Anonymous) 2025-05-20 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly this. I also definitely rely on trusting myself and my vibes, i guess?

like if i read over the tag i've written and i'm like. yeah actually that communicates exactly what i wanted the other player to know here. I won't add to it. I will remove things if it communicates too much (maybe i want there to be an air of mystery) and will add things if it doesn't quite hit the mark.

I don't like to focus on matching length because i don't think every tag needs to be long to communicate the story, and most of my threads go between drastically different lengths of tags with both players based on the moment they're in.

one big problem is this hobby is that some people have too many tw/cws for their own personal ooc preferences that it’s nearly impossible to thread with them. we’ve hit a point where we need to walk on eggshells whenever we want to make an engaging thread.

I just heard that there are a few murdergames running right now which I figure is normal, but it's my first time hearing of any in years. Which I also figure means I'm just running in the wrong RP circles, which I then ask: how do I find these circles/hear about murder games before they start?

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-05-20 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think these days you have to have someone on your tl, discord, etc who plays in those circles otherwise you're unlikely to hear about them at all. It's like the ecats circle and their games, where it doesn't really cross over into the main side of dwrp anymore
