the key word is that those characters are indeed "fictionalized" entities with backstories divorced from the actors portraying them, so by that definition i think they should clear. if somebody's rping the green dude from gorillaz i'd assume they're pulling from the whacky music video storylines or w/e, not the dude voicing and singing green guy and incorporating what he does in his trailer after a music gig or whatever

if vtubers fall along the same lines, then the same probably applies

it's unlikely to be at dreamwidth because they seem to be funded pretty well and do have more than one staff member holding up the load. squeaky has been saying for years that ij is both a time suck and a financial suck and it's just through sheer stubbornness of not wanting to destroy the site for all the people on it that's kept him from giving up.

but the lack of communication is a big problem, he'll go days without addressing it being down and has no obvious intention to solve major errors happening on the site, because he simply does not have the support system or capability. it is only a matter of when it'll die entirely.

resting entirely on the shoulders of one person's willingness to keep it up means that it's a miracle ij is still up at all. dw at least has multiple people supporting it, even if they're all unpaid volunteers

disappointed at this thread i started with new cr. i can tell the person isn't really reading or absorbing the writing, and every tag i get back it's like it exists in a vacuum.

i'm not sure if it's the player's style or if the character has a goldfish memory. (the problem being that i know it's not the character if they were ic.) it's maybe also a sign they don't care for the cr. which is all right i guess, just disheartening.

Any Piccrews or other character creators I could use for an elven OC with a non-human skin tone? Anyone taking commission for drawn icons? Struggling to find anything that won't run me $300+ via commissions.

you ruffled a lot of feathers with this one because people here are like frogs that have boiled in a pot for too long. they are too used to it so can't understand how jarring it can be to people new to the hobby and/or who took a long break

i'm seeing the pendulum swing back to public games though. people are starting to get tired of all this red tape only for games to close up in less than six months. paradoxically i think rp is easier to find than ever with places like rpanons and enablemeplz and bakerstreet. the problem is finding people who aren't flakes which has always been a problem

sounds like you want to be in a game probably because games offer more panfandom opportunities and usually have a premise and plot. my suggestion is to take it in stride, keep an eye out for interesting games and keep hitting tdms. nothing says you have to app to a game after you top level on their tdm. meanwhile just rp casually on the side in places like bakerstreet

tl;dr: you don't want it to be a job so don't turn it into a job

rp has always been like this. I used to rp on mu*s and even there you had to pick one to join, create a character from whole cloth, write up a description for when people looked at your character, and then wander around the mu* chatting with other characters until you found some you meshed with to do some longer scenes.

i don't know why you're surprised that a collaborative writing hobby requires both collaboration and writing.

try neka.cc too (a site a lot like picrew but in chinese). i'd also check vgen (or your commission site of choice) for people offering twitch/discord emote commissions, those are in resolutions above 100x100px but drawn specifically to clearly convey emotions and be readable at even smaller resolutions than 100x100. depending on prices those can still run you $300+ for a set of 15 but you can get decent deals too

genuinely, it's amazing that it's been kept up all this time. it's been struggling almost from its inception but lately it's been especially bad. that's why they did the 'need invite codes to make a new journal' option a few years back, they were getting so many bots. not sure what is crashing them lately but it's constant. and it's resting on one person's shoulders to hold on even when it's a drain on them mentally and financially.

wondering this as well because i've rped on a multitude of different venues over the years and the only one that came close to having instant rp was chatroom stuff back in the day where you could just hop into the chatroom and start rping.

i think it's funny how everyone is nitpicking your wording instead of focusing on what's obvious: you're tired of the hoops you gotta jump through to join a game. whether those hoops have or have not increased since you last rped doesn't change that you're allowed to complain about it because this is the rp woes thread and it's a pain point for you

ayrt - I think the one I'm thinking of was in the pre-covid times. That said we have lost people in the hobby even before that, so that doesn't preclude "Someone went offline very suddenly right around the same time and it turned out they'd died". But as the other anon said, even if this was the incident I was specifically remembering, I'm sure there were a dozen more I never heard about because I wasn't in the right circles that fit roughly the same bill.

Really feeling like I'm getting my footing back in my games after having to take off pretty much the last three months due to holidays and then January being on fire. It's nice to be able to tag people promptly and get good CR going again!

What's the overall consensus on malleable protagonists in DWRP? Hero of Ferelden, Shepard, Warrior of Light, Tav/Durge, etc? I'm surprised because my old stomping grounds despised characters like these. They were considered glorified OCs and that you'd be better off making your own.

i don't think there is an overall consensus; most games allow malleable protagonists but some have restrictions (only one shepard per game, e.g.) and a few don't allow them at all

likewise for memes/psls players of npcs from games like these will usually indicate things like "no assumed ships with protags," "protags loved," "protags on a case-by-case basis," and so on in their permissions posts

tbf i'd say dwrp has only come around to neutral-positive acceptance of ocs on the whole in the last few years or so. back in the older days things were a lot more hostile to them, but it seems we've mellowed since then

though blank slate protagonists are still very much varies-by-person territory, for the reasons you mentioned. some people don't mind them, some people want nothing to do with them. game rules wrt them will vary in the same way

but generally it's expected that if you feel some vehement way about malleable protags, you should be stating that somewhere in your prefs or permissions so protag players can steer away accordingly
