Makin' my blorbos smooch is what gets me through the hard times

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

is there any sort of list of previous games that have been run but have now closed? i have an idea for a game but i was discussing it with a friend and they thought it sounded extremely close to a past game and i wouldn't put it past myself to forget it existed and think i'm being original. i've done searching and could only find lists of current games or outdated ones that aren't terribly old and i'm kind of talking animus past.

ljrp/dwrp has been around so long and there's been so many games that having a list would be difficult. does it matter if its original?

if the game doesn't exist anymore, there's no reason why it would be uncool to re-do it. You'd still probably do it differently than it was done before. I'm with anon above me: does it NEED to be original? cos players probably won't care.

As someone who has been the brainstorm/development/info writing behind a lot of games, including ones I didn't actually mod, I absolutely agree with other anons. Even if you are remembering an existing concept, presumably you'll invent your own worldbuild and NPCs, write your own rules and FAQ and events, design your own code - and of course, the player base will be different!

I think there is a level of plagiarism that would turn me off: if you're copy-pasting previous info documents and html, or using someone else's NPCs/setting design/event write-ups, I think it's important to get permission from the original creators.

Chiming in to it only agree with the above anons but to go a step further and say the more likely reaction to a similar game to a past one is ‘like [game x]? I loved [game x]! Time to join!’

Depends on the game. This discussion has come up before, and some mods are cooler with it than others. If it's possible to contact the mods of the game you're heavily influenced by, it can't hurt to try to reach out as a courtesy.
