Makin' my blorbos smooch is what gets me through the hard times

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

I've been wanting to play more OCs. Are there many OC only games around DW? Where do they advertise?

idk about OC-only, but as someone who plays predominantly OCs it's all about finding the right sub-communities. many games that heavily feature OCs are invite-only, so you'll probably do best asking around on plurk; the fact that you're excited to play an OC in order to interact with other OCs will honestly do a lot to recommend you!

also… you may not like this answer, but I got to experience people specifically actively seeking out and being specifically fans of my OC for the very first time …in an ecats game. (sure, people enjoyed my characters and CR in the past, but seeing people eagerly talk about my character unprompted? holy shit, is this what it's like for popular canon characters all the time?)
if you can enjoy actionspam-style rp, I genuinely recommend considering those communities for your OCs; there is a lot more variety in tag length and tone/style than people tend to realize.

regardless, good luck anon!

seconding that the ecats/murdergame/short-term game circles are incredibly friendly to ocs. almost every game i've been in has had at least 2 ocs and they've all been received well and have gotten just as much attention and cr as the canon characters. heck, i even shipped with someone's oc in my last game!

What's an ecats game?

Also, fairly new to DW from RPing on other sites and I have very few Plurk friends. I'm not really sure how to remedy that either. Is there a Guide To Plurking somewhere?

oh! if you're new to dwrp in general, that does make things a bit trickier, but welcome!!

"ecats" is an acronym derived from the names of the original four games that popularized the style in livejournal-turned-dreamwidth rp community. a more descriptive term would be "commentspam," since scenes proceed at the pace of quick reactions and dialogue—which makes for lots and lots of comments per scene! I'd compare the feeling to the pace of action in something like a tabletop game or LARP, since people usually are focused on portraying dialogue + body language, keeping introspection hidden by default (as it would be "in real life")—which also leaves open a much greater possibility for IC misunderstandings, if that sounds fun to you. longer, more "writerly" posts still have their place (I should know, since I got my start in non-ecats games and am still a pretty wordy person at heart), but they are more for moments of intense emotion/drama rather than the default.

an extremely common format in these games is "teamnesia," where characters begin with amnesia and are sorted onto different teams that must compete in events to regain their memories. these events/in-universe games are a core source of drama, with the relationships and rivalries between teams being a core source of CR.

in general, the ecats community:
- focuses more on roleplaying as the core of the hobby than writing as the core of the hobby (hence the comparison to tabletop rp; in contrast, most journal rp is seen as being an offshoot of fanfiction-writing, which is also why OCs are comparatively unusual and sometimes looked at with skepticism)
- as mentioned, is more enthusiastic about OCs
- features content that ranges from extreme horror scenarios to lighthearted absurdity in the same game
- is overall pretty insular: while it's not hard to break in as a new player as long as you know at least one person, people don't tend to talk about or advertise the games in outside communities.

...plurk I don't have as much advice on, unfortunately. I got into it by creating an account when I joined a game and meeting people that way, but you might also find luck by trying to make connections through friends-of-friends, or people you meet playing in meme communities like Bakerstreet.

"original four games" I MEANT FIVE I CAN COUNT

...in my defense all those games were before my time so I wasn't thinking about it properly.

ecats is a very old term that refers to a very fast-paced and very low-content style of tagging. imagine texting memes but in actionpost style, basically.

plurk is one of those things you basically just have to jump into afaik, you can get by in this hobby without it but it makes playing in games much easier. if you don't know very many people yet, your best bet is getting your feet wet on bakerstreet memes and/or game tdms and make connections from there.

dang, ayrt above beat me to it and much more eloquently. +1 to everything they said, with the surprising note that ecats games are actually still around (was under the impression they all closed ages ago)

will chime in (and ymmv) that plurk is largely useful if you're in a game. if you stick to memes/psl, i would recommend going through the private message system or asking for a means of contact like discord.
