Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. There's a character I want to play, but due to a lack of canon artwork thanks to it being a novel, I only have one icon for him. The people I've seen offering to draw icons cost substantially more than I can afford. How many icons is necessary for DWRP? I know having one icon only is seen as a red flag. Plus I don't want to give off the energy of someone who's going low effort/doesn't care.

i don't think having just one icon would be a red flag for a book character (or any other character that would understandably be hard to find icons for)

having one bad icon (as in grainy, distorted, poorly sketched etc) is the red flag

that said, you could try picrew if you can stand the ads

i'd try the pb route - go black and white, if your character has an unusual color scheme. strategically cropped face close-ups if they have non-human features you can't replicate.

if these whore tricks still don't cut it: keep an eye out on plurk, as some artists do freebies now and then, and some will be discounting for black friday and christmas.

if that's all not workable, keeping to 1-3 icons is perfectly fine, as long as they're not heavily pixelated or granulated. it's only really a weird choice - and even then, not a red flag - when it's a widely iconed character that the player is choosing to keep to one default icon.

i like peppering a few illustrated icons in with the PBs, but PB-type images are certainly a lot easier to build a collection of

it looks so weird when people do this and ruins the immersion imo. just pick a consistent pb.

RP is not high up on my prioritised hobbies so I have as few as three or four icons on some accounts. It's never interfered in my getting tags! But I also use live action PBs for my book characters and have never had any complaints to my face about it.
