I play a character who honestly says about two words at a time in canon and no more if he can help it, so I always try to move the thread forward with other context clues. What is his body language showing, how is he reacting to whatever the room or outdoors is like around him, even how he smells sometimes if only to give the other person something to work with.

Not doing that just seems like lazy writing to me. The worst time of it I ever had was a long, well-thought out tag I did and someone literally answering "No" and nothing else in their tag. I dropped that bullshit faster than a hot potato.

i too play a character like this and so i always give descriptions of what he's doing physically, what sort of expression he has on his face, etc. so that the other player has something to work off of outside of his minimal speech.

you gotta give people SOMETHING to work from, even if that something isn't dialogue.

The most annoying thing I ever hear bad players of reticent characters say is that their character doesn't have a reason to engage with someone. That's the player's job. If the character is just going to sit there like a lump until something happens, then the player is the one responsible for making sure something is actually happening in the thread to cause their paths to cross.

They don't want to talk to strangers? Too bad they're walking to the same place and they both need to open the door at the same time. They wouldn't go to the party? Well they forgot it was happening and they just walked in on it. They don't want to keep talking to this person? Unfortunately for them the child's toy they're fishing out of the fountain keeps getting further out of reach and its going to take a few more tags for them to grab it and maybe the job would be easier with an extra pair of hands. It doesn't have to last forever but you can at least make it interesting while it does.

sometimes it means "i don't have a reason for my character to interact with yours that motivates me to do all of that"

i think that's fair as long as they accept the response to that might be "my character is gonna find someone else more helpful/interested/interesting/engaging, 3 tags and let's end this thread, bye"

I don't blame someone for not having the energy for that all the time, and it's not like the other player isn't also supposed to be putting in work and meeting you halfway. But part of the trade-off of having a quiet character is in compensating for that oocly if you want to participate in RP long-term.
