a game based on a really dark part from Animorphs: The Ellimist Chronicles. the part where a moon-spanning abomination has a garden of undersea corpses and wants to play games with the one living person it's snared. But a little lighter overall because there'd be multiple characters in this position, who can talk to each other, and an end is possible that isn't absorbing the minds of the dead and Father itself and leaving the moon as a demigod. (though, that would be rad)

I'll comment to this, hang on-

the premise: you awaken in the home you most treasured (regardless of if it's gone) and everyone you love is there (including those who're dead, betrayed you, etc), happy and harmonious. they, and the world around you, will play along for as long as you like, going about their lives, fighting, maybe dying or being killed but always coming back without comment. if you don't know about or can't imagine something, it's not there. people are mostly in character, but if you question the situation their affect changes and they're honest. "Yes, I did disappear years ago." "Yes, I turned on you." "Yes, I got killed two hours ago. Was it two hours?" the more you question it the more people will join in, all with the same affect, trading off as they speak. "This is not a dream. Do you want to know what it is? You may regret it. Do you want the truth? Do you really?"

smash cut to: being tethered far under the sparkling surface of an alien sea, held suspended, floating, latticed with braided tendrils, barely able to move, any powers suppressed and at the disposal of a greater will. a mass over your mouth and nose swells and shrinks as you breathe. around you, others in a similar position, breathing, their eyes closed. the tendrils descend out of sight into the depths, and you can't see very far but the suspended 'forest' extends far out in every direction. most of the people not close by are visibly dead but not decaying and far more merged with the tendrils.

cut back to the full-body illusion of home, and everyone you love is there again, speaking together. "I am Father. I am the life of this planet. All that is here comes from me, belongs to me, is a part of me. All power is mine. It is lonely with only the dead for company. I want to play a game."

so, you know, a lot of seemingly being transported into completely different settings, meeting the other players, and playing games. sometimes these are actually video games, or board games, involving hands and screens etc. sometimes you run mazes or duel and it seems physical. Powers are often present but not always, sometimes all the other players have your exact powerset. NPC versions of non-apped castmates may be involved but they're made from your memories and aren't people. Father is interested in how you interact with others, but its logic and priorities are obtuse.

and Toomin is there, the first captive, a strange insect-bird alien that will take on other forms in game spaces, pathetically glad to see and talk to other people. he explains that Father isn't all-knowing or all-powerful. it's intelligent but not creative and can't imagine that a captive could find a meaningful way to defy it. he can show you how to communicate with each other when not in a game, even get you to be "together" somewhere when between games, instead of separately going back to your home illusions.

there's some islands in Father's ocean where it's stacked up all the ships that have been drawn to crash here, and one has the jamjar tech that let it reach into other canons and grab people. Toomin can't do it, but you're not as heavily wired up, it may be possible to disengage and swim and get out there before you're discovered. use the jamjar tech to go home, and/or destroy it so it can't just keep doing this. Father may have taken some of your non-apped canonmates too when it snared you, keeping them hooked up and 'asleep', which complicates escape, but it also means it's possible to have a returned home drop instead of only mind breaking.

idk I just think that part of the book is cool. applegrant and fucked up ideas is my OTP

This does sound great and I love games with inherent, regular events cooked in. Especially if they're packed with variety, which is my absolute jam.

I think you'd have to put a lot of thought into the "together" part because restricting how characters can interact in downtime too much is a drag, but too much freedom would defeat the point.

the book mentions several types of game but the only one shown in detail is appearing on an alien cruise ship and having a music contest, so there's a huge amount of flexibility in what "game" means and where it can be set. Father blips Toomin there a moment before it starts and back home pretty much as soon as the audience reaction ends, but for a DWRP there'd be chance to poke around.

since Father is not creative, the settings are ultimately on recreations of the planet it's spanning (like, the cruise ship is in its ocean, a plaza where chess boards are set up is floating above it, islands) and going out of bounds means being able to get a bit of the lay of the land, such as it is. important things are left out but Father is not creative, so instead, say, a square of the beach is copy-pasted repeatedly to cover stuff on an island.

yeah having to fine tune "together" would be important. there'd be some alone time and games vs a Father avatar (it always wins, even if that means cheating) but that'd mostly be handwaved. maybe it's possible to stay in the game space for some time after the game ends, but soon the NPCs start fading out, light starts dimming, etc. probably there'd be a network.

Father might enable some interaction because it enjoys studying conflict but what its idea of "conflict" is might be obtuse. it might also sometimes just have two characters fight or compete in a fair way but what "fair" is is also obtuse.

I love Animorphs and this idea!

animorphs is so good! it's really hard to turn the general premise into a dwrp, I know there was an extensive au one that did that years ago and I'm sad I missed it. maybe I'll pitch an attempt (probably also has to be au) sometime.

this particular animorphs book was one of my favorites and i read it many times and would be VERY interested if this became a dwrp game.

Okay, aside from all the other ways KAA traumatized me with child soldiers morphing into animals, Father definitely stuck with me as a certain special kind of horror. And I do like that the premise already has a lot of jamjar elements baked into it: an all-powerful omnipotent head god of the game that cannot be defeated, a NPC right there in the form of Toomin, games to serve as monthly or bi-monthly events. All good things! Plus there's the overall plot of finding a way to defeat Father as Toomin did in the book, so you can inch towards that goal slowly to appease the type of character that get frustrated not being able to ever buck the system in jamjars. I think there could also be a horrific element just to characters arriving, having been forced there by Father, and with there being a possible eerie element of just what happened to any character who drops.

The nice thing too is that if you ever want to call it quits, you just wrap up the last few events with having the characters start winning the games and ultimately defeat Father, and bam! Everyone gets to go home.

Yeah! I half think this would be set during that point in time just as Toomin starts winning and Father ignores him. bringing more characters in means they compete against each other and therefore (in theory) Toomin's blocked from absorbing more than a bit of it.

yeah there's a built-in endgame. I'd like to have the option to stick with Toomin and be the Ellimist together - it'd be funny if that explained his line in 26 calling himself "an Ellimist" and talking about "we" - but absolutely that'd be an unusual IC choice and mostly everyone goes home. or to someone else's home, it'd be up to them.

Love Animorphs, and this premise, I'd be interested!

as someone unfamiliar with the canon, it sounds very trippy in the details (is it worth a read for series newcomers?) but also at its core a lot like what a game inspired by the matrix series would be like. did anyone ever make a game around that premise? if so, maybe look to that for event ideas, ideas for other areas, etc.

also, the premise really makes me think of the old ecco the dolphin games for some reason. probably just the shared ocean premise but a lot of the music from that series imo really clicks with the eerie vibe it sounds like you're going for here.

hope you manage to get it off the ground, anon!

the Ellimist Chronicles is totally worth a read! It's perfectly capable of standing alone and isn't even a hundred pages, so the whole thing moves very quickly. The book has a lot of weird aliens and sadness and changing in the process of surviving something terrible. I really like it! and like all animorphs books it's really easy to find online and the authors are cool with that.

anyway it is very Matrix-y that's true. I'm not sure there's ever been a Matrix game, maybe small or private or never got off the ground ones? I'm not actively looking to create a game, I don't think I have what it takes, but I truly love to pitch ideas.

there is that ecco aesthetic a bit. when Toomin takes a ship into the ocean he and his crew are like oooh look at all this colorful sea life! feathery-finned fish, schools of eels, a hydrofoil jellyfish, huh there's tentacle seaweed down there, must be long since they disappear into the abyss. I'll have to listen to the music!
