Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

This is the kind of comment where I worry it's about me, because I play this type of character and it is a tough line to walk... but I also think at the end of the day, RP is for fun and we're all humans who get tempted by the juicy moments. Also, it takes a lot of time and writing to really learn a character inside and out, and that means slipping up! And that's okay! Sometimes, you have to mess up a bit to really learn how a character ticks.

I know the point of this tl is that you're not going to talk to other person about it for whatever personal reasons, but I do think having an honest talk would help a lot for both parties. Maybe they can't undo what's already happened, but they can course correct a bit or take it into account for future RPs, or at least adjust what's going on with your shared ship. It's okay to feel frustrated, but if you're still RPing with this person you're not doing either of you any favors by keeping your thoughts to yourself. Talk to them! It might go better than you think :)

my guy have you ever tried to give a dwrper genuine crit... i don't think that's going to work out the way you think it's going to work out

I’m not sure many actually have. In all my years doing this I received exactly one crit and it was someone getting unhinged about conflict they weren’t involved in and all the players who were had agreed on and vibed with. Everyone I play with seems to have HMDs that only ever get a compliment or two and usually nothing otherwise. Maybe it’s a combination of people not knowing how to effectively crit (or what is worth crit versus what amounts to a difference in interpretation) and people who don’t know how to accept crit idk.

Actually, yeah. Several times over the years in fact. Every time turned out fine.

If everyone you RP with freaks out at the tiniest critique, you should probably find better circles to play in. I know we joke about "DWRPers can't communicate" but in my experience most people here are perfectly reasonable, just awkward. If you're not having fun anyway, why worry about them freaking out at a reasonable concern? If it ends badly you can drop their ass.

this depends on the people you have around you, absolutely. and you can be very sensitive about the crit, but people still take it poorly.

in the past when hmds were more common, i would crit players often. sometimes, i would realize i got it all wrong and their reasoning made perfect sense. i have had some crits that i worded poorly or wrote in annoyance and i accept that i was wrong in those moments, but for the most part, majority of these rpers accepted the crit and either applied them or not depending on how valid it is.

the only reason i stopped writing crits so much is because i just stopped caring about most canons and can't tell if someone is ic or not, but if this is still majority the same playerbase from before, most people are still much more reasonable than you'd think.

OP/AYRT

Actually, right after I posted I tested the waters for crit - since "in our thread and many others over a long period you have been incredibly OOC" feels like a huge bomb to drop, so instead I gently asked about a much smaller canon detail they got wrong (ie they were having Bob eat chicken when it's been mentioned he's a vegetarian, so I said it wasnt a big deal but asked if they had seen the supplementary vegetarian info, just checking if my Alice was meant to comment on the chicken or if it was a slip) and they did not handle it well - fawning OTT gratitude while also beating themselves up, deleted the whole thread, came back a day later to demand an apology for hurting their feelings and tell me it was ablest to expect them to remember every little detail about their character and low key compared me to an "Um, acthualllyyyy" nerd. Then when we went back to tagging they kept "checking in" about the thread to prompt me to compliment it. It's also had a ripple effect among our mutual friends, as now they're pressuring everyone to give them crit.

So not only am I not going to share this crit I think I am going to ghost this person all together and drop my character from the game we are shipping in. Yikes.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
yikes indeed.

sorry they ended up going nuts over that. you are definitely better off not being around them.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt, lol I'd still say that was a success. Sucks that they were ridiculous, but hey, now you know and you're free! Enjoy your greener pastures, anon. You deserve better than that!

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh sorry they showed their ass like that, anon. You're better off.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
do you feel comfortable sharing what fandom or character because this sounds insane lmao

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
you'd have to be pretty unaware not to see this type coming from a mile away tho

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
and we had people up-thread whining about why people give excuses like "I'm busy" instead of giving honest crit. yall that shit works out BAD. better to just coast and ghost.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean

it's a case by case basis? some people respond well to crit, but those people probably wouldn't have let things slide this far in the first place. i would've said that it's better to cut your losses instead of trying to just talk to someone who's been playing this out for weeks, maybe months, probably.

so yeah in this case cut your losses and ghost instead of going just taaaaaalk to them is the best choice.

but also handwringing about how this shit always works out badly is dumb and is equally as maladjusted as op's shipmate.
